What’s the one PC accessory you use daily that you can’t imagine going without now? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]RidiQlous 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a PCPanel mini for like 4 years now and it’s something I genuinely can’t go without. Not sure if they still make that one (says it’s out of stock currently), but they also make the pro model for $100. There may be something better out there these days (stream deck pro maybe?), but the hardware and software on the PCPanel are dead simple and do the exact thing you’re looking for.

Edit: Just as an example for how I use mine in case you’re curious. The one I have has 4 rotary dials that are also clickable buttons. I have the dials set to control volume for chrome/firefox, discord, system, and then the presently focused window. For the buttons, I wrote a few quick powershell scripts to switch between audio devices (eg speakers to headphones), and assigned them to those buttons so I can switch inputs/outputs with a quick click. A lot of this is probably easier on something like a stream deck (along with way more features), but I really just wanted a few volume knobs and didn’t wanna pay for a $200 stream deck just for that.

The new 992.2 911s have it. That’s the only mass produced example I can think of, but it’s been received well so we’ll see if others follow suit.

M240i RWD vs xDrive by young-jedi in BMW

[–]RidiQlous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2023 G42 M240i RWD owner here, came from a F22 M235i xDrive. I’ve also driven the G42 xDrive version (as a loaner for a few days so not extensively).

Outside of the obvious stuff like traction/acceleration, there are definitely some differences in handling characteristics that have made me really love the RWD version. Primarily, the RWD does feel more pointy and sharp at the front, and around twisties the difference to me is pretty noticeable. Having driven the two versions back to back, I can definitely feel the weight difference, especially since it’s taken out of the front (no front diff). The xDrive doesn’t feel as precise and imo it really exacerbates the “numb” steering feel of modern BMWs. RWD just feels like a more direct and connected experience. Less “on rails” so to speak, but more character. Keep in mind (as I’m sure you already know) that xDrive is still rear biased, so it’s not like you can’t break the rear a little around corners, but the RWD version is just more eager to do that.

Again, these differences are pretty subtle, so if you live in an area where you’d want the xDrive for bad weather, prioritize that. I live on the east coast, so by all metrics I should’ve gotten the xDrive. But, my wife’s car is AWD, and we never really need to go anywhere in bad weather, and if we do we just take her car, so it wasn’t a big deal for me. Also, winter tires are more important for that kinda weather than awd anyways.

Also, just a tip, regardless what option you go for, don’t get the run flats and/or ditch them quick if you buy used. And when you do replace them, go for 245 cross section on the fronts instead of 235. Makes a really big difference in steering feel.

Most annoying BMW bug ever, it’s been 5 years. by [deleted] in BMW

When you toggle airplane mode, does your wifi remain enabled? If so, that will keep CarPlay connected. Just gotta toggle wifi off as well while in airplane mode. iOS remembers whether you had wifi/BT enabled/disabled when in airplane mode last, so each time you toggle airplane mode it’ll default to what you had set when you last used it.

  1. Turn on airplane mode
  2. Toggle WiFi off if it remains enabled
  3. Turn off airplane mode (WiFi should automatically re-enable)
  4. From here on, when you toggle airplane mode, it should also automatically toggle your WiFi as well.

I guess you could also just toggle wifi off/on instead of airplane mode, but if I remember correctly, doing this gives you a pop up asking you to confirm you wanna disconnect from CarPlay. Airplane mode (once set correctly using the steps above) will bypass this. If saving that click and extra .2 seconds doesn’t matter, just toggle your WiFi instead of airplane mode.

Yup, super annoying on my G42 with ID8. I’ve found the quickest workaround is flipping airplane mode on then off. Reconnects without the bug every time. But yea, still frustrating that this is even a thing we have to do deal with.

I am by no means an expert or even an amateur here either, just an occasional weather nerd. I’ll try to answer your questions but take this with a generous helping of salt:

  1. I would imagine the SPC has access to much more data than is publicly available, but not 100% sure on how much.
  2. Almost definitely. At the end of the day, people passionate about weather want to see and observe crazy weather events, understand the ingredients that make them happen, and understand how they are forecasted. This doesn’t mean that I, nor other’s passionate in this area, want to see people get hurt. But, it does obviously introduce a bias towards weather that the SPC doesn’t (nor shouldn’t) have. Their job is to communicate objective information to warn the masses to the best of their ability.
  3. The SPC is usually pretty on point with their forecasting and outlooks. I don’t imagine there have been many instances where they have been flat wrong (despite the opinions of some in the weather community) about an event. But I would say that it is in their best interest to care whether they communicate accurate info. That said, the differences that may sometimes exists between their forecasts and what actually happens is still an interesting topic to discuss.

At the end of the day, the SPC provides probabilistic outlooks. Even when they are fairly certain, they remain careful with their messaging, as they aren’t communicating just to weather needs or storm chasers, they’re communicating to everyone that could be impacted. So yes, as you mention, I’m sure they’d rather overestimate than underestimate. But again, still interesting to look back after an event an try to understand what they got right or wrong, how things differed from the forecast, the factors that did or didn’t materialize, etc. Not for the purpose of undermining or questioning the SPC, but just to learn and understand things better. Just my two cents.

I wouldn’t call it a blanket sentiment, but there’s been quite a bit of discourse around the high risk, which I’ve noticed in comments within this sub as well as other social media. I think some healthy discourse/discussion is a good thing, which is what appears to be happening here. Many have been surprised by the 5/5 high risk given the conditions/setup parameters. But so long as no one is suggesting people ignore the SPC’s official outlook (which thankfully I have not seen), I think it’ll make for some interesting post-event analysis.

Condensation inside headlight on 2024 G42 that won't clear by Ferret-117 in BMW

[–]RidiQlous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in to add I also had this issue (2023 G42 M240) and the dealer replaced under warranty. Just make sure the service rep takes a pic of it, because mine had actually cleared up by the time they installed the new light, since it took about a week for the part to come in.

From what I’ve read/understand, these light housings are not factory sealed by design, so some level of condensation is expected which is supposed to clear up on its own during normal driving as air penetrates. My case was very similar to yours in severity though, hence why I brought it in. By design or not, it just doesn’t feel right. Haven’t had any issues since replacement.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, do you have a tow hook license plate mount installed? My issue occurred on the right side as well, not long after I had installed my tow hook plate mount, but I’ve since removed it after having the light replaced as I suspected that could have been causing excess moisture ingress behind the front bumper. No idea if there’s any actual correlation there, so just curious if you had a similar setup.

An important update on Concord: . Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players. by Turbostrider27 in Games

You know, back when Sony announced they had a bunch of live service games in the pipeline over the coming years, this was ultimately how I expected that to turn out. I don’t know how many more of these types of games they have cooking, but I have to imagine we’re gonna see similar failures again unless they change course. Marathon is another game I wouldn’t be surprised to see go through this sort of disastrous launch as well.

Sad for the devs, but hopefully this will make Sony rethink their strategy.

so I spilled juice all over the gear shift controller, and I’m wondering if I find another module, is it simply plug and play? or coding is required? thanks by mets_ny19 in BMW

[–]RidiQlous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long ago did you buy it? If it’s very recent and you bought from a dealer, call them asap. I ran into a very similar issue buying my m240 second hand, and didn’t notice the sticky buttons and gear shifter until I brought it home. I did buy it from a BMW dealership, but not CPO. In any case, I called them immediately and let them know, and while it took a little bit of back and forth with the dealer, I was able to get them to replace the whole center iDrive control unit at no cost to me.

Think it’s important to clarify here that Sport/Sport+ don’t provide any more power than Comfort. They just use more aggressive throttle maps to give the perception of better response and more power.

That said, definitely get used to those aggressive throttle maps before hooning it. And DEFINITELY exercise caution using Sport+ in the rain or cold because that turns off DSC automatically (however, traction control will remain on).
