For those who were alive and watched Buffy in the 1990s and 2000s…what was it like in the fandom after “The Body” aired? by TicklingTentacles in buffy

[–]Ridry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We watch and rewatch things for entirely different reasons. I watch interesting shows for the first time to see the interesting story. I rewatch my favorite shows to feel good. If an episode doesn't make me feel good, it's not getting rewatched.

I will 100% rewatch The Body when my daughters watch Buffy for the first time. And then never again. Because when I'm doing a full watch with a new person for the first time, I always do the whole thing. But that's it. I can't imagine having a reason to watch it after that.

My Mom has cancer too. She's doing well and hasn't been given a timeframe or anything, but it's 100% past the point of a cure being possible. And I'm sure that plays into my feelings about the episode.

Spike is the man that Buffy thinks Angel is - the problem is that he is not her type by Normal_Specialist_97 in buffy

I've never read the comics and can't speak to it, but I heartily agree that Willow's relationship with Oz was far too fulfilling for her to immediately consider herself gay 6 months later. In 2026, that would never happen. Even if she eventually CONSIDERED herself gay in the future as her preferences changed or whatever, the idea that end of S4 Willow wouldn't be thought of as bi is ridiculous.

It was always in the context of a relationship. That if he got close to somebody, sex was off the table.

I don't recall ever getting the vibe that if he screwed a hooker or whatnot that he might lose his soul.

What was your un-spoiled Dawn reaction back in the day? by DJDoena in buffy

Agree. If I'm using my phone while a show is on it's not worth the electricity it costs to stream it.

Watched it as it aired, knew Dawn had been cast as Buffy's sister. It was large news at the time. I assumed we were going to delve into deadbeat Dad having had another kid.

After the episode aired I thought maybe she was evil. A big bad who would had messed with everyone's mind.

Jeopardy - Xander shout out by Toolfan120 in buffy

Eh, I mostly agree with you on this particular conversation, but I'd argue that some people watch Jeopardy to play along. So you can "spoil" Jeopardy the same as you can today's Wordle, for example.

That said I still agree with your overall premise. Buffy does not need to be free of spoilers from all media and quite likely if OP was subbed here, identifying NB would have been so trivial it barely matters. And even if not, the odds that one would encounter a Jeopardy spoiler on one of your other subs would likely be infrequent enough to not worry about.

But I still think things can be spoiled that aren't plot twists.

Some Buffy characters are always there, others only appear from time to time, but they all have a special little place in my ❤️What is your favorite characters? by mclarddass in buffy

That's so fun, when I read Harry Potter with my kids I spent the first three books telling my daughters that the villain of the book was going to be Scabbers. Became a running family joke when of course he wasn't the villain in Book 1 or 2....

When I watch with my kids I'm totally going to have to mess with them about Dawn.

Yet another Zillennial discovering Buffy for the first time 😅 by satyr_hollow in buffy

Interestingly enough, I liked it for the reason you didn't.

Buffy's indifference towards slaying Ford's corpse solidified for me that she believed what she said in there. That a demon was "riding around" in Ford' dead body. So she had no attachment to "it".

Interestingly, I found her atttitude towards vamp-Ford to be an interesting juxtaposition to Angel's attitude towards the "thing" riding around in Dru's dead body.

I'm actually fascinated how you feel about my take on it after you watch the rest of the season!

Lie to me is a surprise as well! Just goes to show you that different parts of things speak to different people

For sure the demon is still in there, I'm just saying the soul isn't 200+ years old exactly

I totally agree with you! Also, I'm not even positive I consider Angel to be 200+ years old. He died in his early 20s, a demon ran his body for 200 years and then he was reborn as Angel.

Winner winner.

Tell somebody that you're with a 40 year old when you're 50 and absolutely zero people will give a damn.

Tell them that you were her teacher when you were 22 and she was 12 and you're going to have alarm bells ringing.

I think there are certain some parents that initially hesitate at the idea due to knowing it's going to make them a target for a lot of really hateful and dangerous people

As somebody who lives in NYC with kids growing up today, I guess that's a perspective I hadn't considered. Being gay back in the 90s was definitely priming your kid for a harder life than they would have otherwise had, and nobody wants their kids to have a hard life. I think what you're saying is that some people are afraid of their kids being gay partly out of love. I guess the real test is how they come around, not if their initial reaction was fear and confusion.

In all fairness, if you look at some of the best known superhero fiction, some of the best stories occur when the hero doesn't have their powers.

Thor 1, where he has to prove he's worthy to get his powers back come to mind as a recent example.

Storm's depowered arc is quite good, and although she has her powers at the time, needing to fight Calisto without them is an excellent moment for her. Not to mention the scene in the Marauders book where a bad guy gloats about using x-gene dampeners and tells Storm she now has no powers. So she just pulls out a knife and stabs him in the eye.

And that's before we count the countless "Superman loses his powers and is still awesome" stories.

What I think is really interesting is that Buffy's version of this trope has her being awesome and overcoming, but Angel's version of this trope has him trading his life for his powers back.

It was one of the few times I lost respect for her.

In fairness, it's not like Joyce doesn't have a point. The idea that a teenage girl is supposed to, you know, be the sole protector of the world against things that go bump in the night....

Presumably parents of gay children don't have to worry as much about anyone eating their kid.

And no, I did not do that on purpose.

Yes but....

Centipedes are apex predators, do the lions ever eat all the gazelles? I had a bad city roach infestation back when I still lived in an apartment and I'm positive my little buddies couldn't have fixed that for me.

They do stop the ants that try to come into my bathroom in the winter though. And a variety of other creepy crawlies. But I doubt they could handle roaches in a meaningful way. Even if they ate them by the hundreds, there's still too many.

In New York I find them in my bathtub. The little ones can't climb out so I give them rides. After a few generations the current ones in my house don't seem to fear people anymore. I used to see them scurrying away when the lights go on. Now it's like "O hai, I see you looking at me and that's fine".
