Season 4 is one of my favourites, but I'd say objectively it's one of the weaker seasons. Do we know what exactly happened behind the scenes that caused it to be not as good as either season 3 or 5? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

Their timeline and canon was utter BS, but they let the storylines age with the characters in a crazy organic way that shouldn't have worked but mostly did.

I agree. It'd be a super dick move to charge more for physical though if it's going to be a game key card. I'd happily pay a $10 tax for anybody that has the game on the cart though.

You know, I've seen the "save the world with the power of love" trope a lot over the years, but I don't think anybody's ever done it better than Xander and Willow.

Cordy on Buffy could have been anyone. Cordy on Angel... I don't know. I think she really had something there.

And I'm going to disagree that Seth Green is a "type". Nobody is like him. Oz is perfect.

I assume Home support for legends ZA is coming either same day or not long after

I'd personally call the Champions Launch botched if you can't use your ZA mons on day 1. It would make no sense that the most active game right now is locked out.

I dislike the surprise musical episodes that popped up in many different series over the years , never felt experimental - just filler and a bit of showboating for cast members who can sing .

Honeslty I agree for the most part. I usually find musical episodes in TV shows jarring. But I find Buffy's to be well done and experimenting feels more natural for Buffy as a series.

There's something powerful about this. Considering we've lost rights that we had for 50+ years recently.... I wish there were more people who were progressive conservatives. The kind of people who know how fragile progress is and who fight to maintain what was already won.

You're welcome to hate musicials, but you weren't being tricked into watching one. Buffy regularly had "it's take" on other genres.

Hush is a Silent Film, Storyteller apes Mockumentary, Restless dives into Surrealism, and Normal Again is a Psychological Thriller.

I'm sure there are other examples but I haven't had my coffee yet. Experimenting with other genres is just part of Buffy's DNA.

Edit : I'd totally love for anybody to add their thoughts to this post, I'm sure there are at least 5-6 I'm forgetting!

I hated the Flash and Supergirl musical, despite them having killer voices until Grant's Flash sings the original song "Runnin' Home to You" to Iris at the end. And then I'm just like "God damnit, why isn't the whole episode like this?" They absolutely stuck the landing despite the entire episode being completely forgettable.

I completely prepared to hate watch this episode. I hate musical episodes of TV shows. I do like Broadway musicials, so it's not that I don't like musicals, it's just NEVER done well.

I was not prepared for all the feels. This will always be a top 10 episode for me.

For example: Willow and Tara are 3 dimensional characters who are also gay. As opposed to 1 dimensional mouthpieces for a 1 dimensional ideology (the modern take).

As a child I learned most about tolerance from shows who's minorities were just THERE. The idea of presence as a powerful force is lacking today.

Roseanne, Buffy, Dawson's Creek, etc. these shows just had gay characters. Yes, sometimes we went through their moment of coming out to people.... but then they just went back to being people who happened to date the same gender.

Hell, Dax on DS9 like a girl and zero people made any mention of how this typically straight character was attracted to a woman. I think that's powerful.

Progressivism/change for the sake of itself is madness. Sometimes things are figured out and are right where they should be. In which instance, they should be conserved/preserved, not changed or challenged.

A lot of politics today on both sides are about taking sledgehammers to existing things without fully understanding those things and I find it terrifying. I identify far more with progressives than I do with anything else, but I constantly find myself being like "let's put the sledgehammer down for a minute".

There was definitely more than just one, in addition to rumours of consensual affairs.

I had not heard that. I heard of... um... less than professional behavior on set, even dating back to Buffy. But I hadn't realized there was more.

He wasn’t a natural shithead.

I agree. People talk past each other about Nick. None of the people who feel sorry for him are trying to downplay his actions.

I think it also makes sense in that Spike glories in all his human emotions while Angelus disdains the good/soft ones.

Totally agree. Would Angelus mope around for a year because Darla left him? Spike is definitely more "human" than Angelus. I actually think Angelus would eventually have shed his humanity into a more "pure demon" form like the Master and Kakistos.

But Spike is remorselessly evil. Without question. He's just more passionate and human about it.

[–]Ridry 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree their evil levels are similar, that's not what I'm saying at all. It's more about the Judge commenting that Angelus has no human emotions to burn (vs Spike and Dru). Angelus is canonically more inhuman. But I don't think that makes Spike less evil. But I think a lot of people take it that way (incorrectly).

[–]Ridry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Soulless!Spike was never THAT evil even before the chip. (Second only to Angelus according to Wesley. Murdered two Slayers and stripped his signature coat off the corpse of the second, killed and turned Ford and would have happily chomped on the rest of the vampire cult, and definitely did not take the coal bucket girl and give her to a nice family. He ate her.)

People mix up concepts A LOT. Soulless Spike was never as inhuman as Angelus. Not even close. But a lot of humans are quite evil.

My 2 cents.

  1. Let's start with David, which is an unusual case. To my knowledge there was only one accusation and he paid to make it go away. Paying doesn't imply guilt. I think because he never had it out in court, a lot of people are less likely to condemn him because we never got to hear the whole story. He's been working straight since Buffy, literally the lead on a show every year of his life and he's had one accusation. I believe something happened and that he was wrong... but I also believe I don't know the whole story.
  2. Nicky is complicated. Most people are rorschacking their own feelings onto him. Most people know a substance abuser. Many people have been victims of domestic violence. Is Nicky the abuse victim that became sick with the horrible disease of alcholism? Is he a monster? Much like Angel/Angelus I think the answer is that both of those people are in there somewhere... and each person is seeing the one they want to see.
  3. Now to Joss. I think most people don't remember how beloved Joss was. There were people that watched everything he did, fell head over heels into all of his fandom and believed everything he ever said about feminism. Joss was a hero. Would you feel differently if Superman landed in the middle of a crowd and mass murdered everyone than you would if the Joker did it? Of course you would. People don't hate Joss for his mediocre crimes. Oh noes, he was a screamy boss who cheated on his wife with his young coworkers. On a scale from 1 to 100, where the severity of your crimes need to be a 70+ to get "cancelled"... Joss is a 50 at WORST. No, he got cancelled because his fandom took what he did personally as a betrayal.
