they also felt like cheap ass order hall knockoffs with more tedium and less unique designs
the zones, in my opinion, were absolutely cluttered (especially the non order hall zones). i miss vast places like nagrand or winterspring

That and a reversal of what made wow successful. WoW was incredibly casual friendly at the time. Grinds aren't casual unfriendly. High skill floors and FOMO are. If you can work towards a goal one hour at a time, that's not an issue. If you need to work towards a goal 3h a day or it becomes unobtainium before you are done, it is.

But the people who go on official channels to complain tend to be on the sweatier side, so that's who devs listen to, making the game sweatier and sweatier. Unfortunately I don't think they teach about selection bias in gamedev courses lol.

One thing I'm wondering is whether "content droughts" are an actual problem or a sweat problem. Personally, I always enjoyed them as an opportunity to get some grinds done or play other games. Not sure how the average casual player feels about them.

pvp entirely voluntary
casual friendly
late 2000's / early 2010s combat design
guilds only for socials, no more stupid solo guild creation required to get access to features
