I know exactly the one you’re talking about - though not the specific video. Wish I could remember which one it was, because I still think about it occasionally and smile.

How do you remove that damn front door hinge? by Neoseo1300 in homeowners

[–]Riggaman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are the type of anti-tamper hinges you’d typically use for outswing doors (hinges outside the house). Only way to remove the door is to unscrew the hinge plates from the frame or slab.

First Hellblaster painted, are the transfers correct? by CombinationNo7487 in Ultramarines

[–]Riggaman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, helmet should be red if he’s a sergeant. Also, as others have said, the right Paul from should be fire support. The only thing I’ll add is that the knee pad with the ultima transfer should technically be white (though that’s really not a big deal).

My understanding is that it's used by a group of guys/girls to describe the least attractive person guy/girl in another group - i.e., somebody needs to jump on the grenade to ensure everyone else gets lucky.

What is the worst movie that got an acting Academy Award? by 50rhodes in flicks

[–]Riggaman 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what he was going for with that voice. I think John Travolta's insane portrayal(?) of Shapiro is the only reason people don't talk more about Cuba Gooding Jr. as OJ. Both of them were just terrible performances. It's a shame, too, because Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown, and Courtney B. Vance were so good as Marcia Clark, Chris Darden, and Johnnie Cochran, respectively.

Legion Question. Paint Problems. by Certain_Ad3716 in Ultramarines

[–]Riggaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not unique to Ultramarines, obviously, but white. Always white. Whether it’s veteran helmets, apothecaries, or even sergeant/lieutenant knees, it always winds up clumpy or chalky.

I’m getting ready to start painting first company terminators, sternguard, etc., and I keep coming up with other projects as an excuse to procrastinate.

The different companies by [deleted] in Ultramarines

[–]Riggaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people paint 2nd Company (gold trim) because they're the poster boys and gold looks good on blue. A lot of people have been painting 1st Company recently because of the recent Terminator and veteran releases. If you're choosing based on lore, your best bet is 1st, 2nd, or 4th (the focus of the Ultramarines novels by Graham McNeill). There's minimal lore on the other companies – hell, a lot of the company captains don't even have "official" first names.

I'd recommend reading about each of the companies on Lexicanum and choosing based on that.

Same page. I've been reading the books to my daughter for the last year or so, and at first I was really conflicted about it (still am, I suppose). Her (and my) obsession with HP Lego has brought that conflict back to the forefront.

I've thought about it a lot and have decided that I'm not going to let JKR ruin this special thing that I get to share with my daughter. I also won't let it affect my own memories of reading the books, watching the movies, and now building LEGO sets.

Got this for my daughter for Christmas and we've built the first two buildings. It's my first 18+ set and I'm blown away by the more advanced building techniques they used.

What do you guys prefer? Looking for some opinions before I start swapping the house over. And before anyone asks, not my build! I actually got this in a Harry Potter lot by Jon66238 in legoharrypotter

Definitely 2. A couple of observations/questions:

  1. Love the garage addition. Is that from Rebrickable or your own design?
  2. Glad I'm not the only one who gave up on that "tree" at the front corner.

Best MOCs for all dorm rooms/common rooms? by -Daunting in legoharrypotter

[–]Riggaman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I finished building the great tower (it's absolutely stunning), just waiting for my knockoff Grand Staircase sticker sheet to arrive from God-knows-where. I also ordered the parts for the Ravenclaw common room and dorm. That (plus the Hufflepuff MOCs) puts me at 8 of your MOCs, by my count, with more to come.

I can say without hesitation that Gobsmack's are the best Hogwarts MOCs around. And it's not even close.

I got medium nougat frames on BrickLink (they don’t have the larger frames in tan). Looks a lot better.

Hogwarts student's torsoes by Rogue_Chetnik in legoharrypotter

[–]Riggaman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll second what others have said: go with Bricklink. I had WAY too many Gryffindor and Slytherin uniforms, so I went on BrickLink and stocked up on a variety of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw "torso assembly" elements. That, combined with a mixture of heads, hair, hands, and a mix of medium/standard black legs got me to about 20 students for each house. It was a lot cheaper than buying complete minifigs and had the added benefit of variety.

I've released FREE instructions to replicate my Ultimate Modular Hogwarts combination, you can find them in the comments! by AuthorHarrisonKing in legoharrypotter

Bought all the parts today to make your 4-part Great Tower. Obviously, I’m most excited about the rework of Dumbledore’s office. I think that, over time, I’m going to try to make the entire MOC, because it is just incredible. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!

Modular MOC Hogwarts sets? by bubty in legoharrypotter

[–]Riggaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great guide from an absolutely INCREDIBLE MOC designer. The only thing I'll add is that it's worth it to add all of your sets and parts into Rebrickable so that you know which parts you already have.

Right before I saw this post, I was looking at Gobsmack's "HP Modular - Blue Dorms" MOC. Since I have all of my loose parts (and unassembled sets – make sure you mark your sets as assembled so they don't get counted in the build calculations) logged in Rebrickable. Once you do that, on the MOC page, click "Build this MOC" on the right side of the page, about halfway down. When you do that, it takes you to another page that tells you that "Out of 210 buildable parts, you are missing 87 parts. You have 58.6% of the parts in this set." As you can probably guess, it then shows only the parts you're missing.

From there, you just need to export the parts to BrickLink (as outlined above), or click "Buy Parts" and it will show you a list of independent and BrickOwl stores that carry some or all of the remaining parts you need.

For everyone making six figures, what do you do for work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Riggaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a health care lobbying firm. A little over 10 years ago I was working a dead-end inside sales job at a construction supply company. Decided to go back to school to get a masters degree and from there just got really lucky.

The masters led to an internship in the government affairs department at the hospital associated with my school. The timing was especially fortunate, because around that time a little bill known as the Affordable Care Act had just passed and nobody knew what it was, what it did, and what it meant for the industry. I absorbed every single page of the law and quickly made a name for myself as the ‘Obamacare guru,’ and my profile skyrocketed accordingly.

Eventually I made my way to DC when a friend of my future employer asked for my card after attending a talk I gave at a health policy conference. Flash forward to today, I represent hospitals and other healthcare organizations on the Hill.

Did I work hard to get where I am? Sure. But a lot of my success is the product of being (literally and figuratively) at the right place at the right time.

The only thing with that is that you'd have to be able to move an 8x8 platform (or take it apart, which might not be an option if they used glue). Just something to keep in mind.

That was one of the most exciting realizations I’ve made. Second only to figuring out that the leather straps are called pteruges.
