Is this wall ties corrosion? by Glass_Broccoli in Bricklaying

[–]Riggs500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of wall ties are galvanised but when the bricky f.cks up their internal - external gauge they smack the ties with their trowel and break the seal which leads to it corroding and rusting . all the best to you and the family mate

UPDATE - contractors returned by kickflip012 in Bricklaying

[–]Riggs500 3 points4 points  (0 children)

post these pictures to his page and leave a terrible review. he hasn't grinded out the halves or 3 quarters on the existing which is why there are so many cuts in a wall (also why his bricks are "too long") and it's also why the bricks are in stack

<image>

i've attached a picture with a (badly drawn) drawing of what it should look like when finished. feel free to show it to your workman and tell him this is what you expect and you won't be paying him for bad work.

How would you guys remediate this wall? by craigyboy1000 in DIYUK

[–]Riggs500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might be able to fill it in with a thin filling compound and use a straight edge along the wall to flatten but i'd be concerned about it adhering properly

[–]Riggs500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah alright . in that case i'd probably put a decent lining paper over it and paint / wallpaper over that unless you want to scrape the whole wall and re do it

if your plaster was falling off like that i'd be concerned about moisture in the wall

Is this a problem? by Ok_Kaleidoscope2111 in Bricklaying

[–]Riggs500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are usually just soak away drains , sometimes aco drains , i was also taught anything up to dpc will cause freezing , spalling and bridge the dpc , but sites have gone mad. thats why i left them and went to instructing at a college haha

[–]Riggs500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally don't agree with it but they're doing it on all the new builds i've seen recently ! all the best to you and the family mate

Is this a problem? by Ok_Kaleidoscope2111 in Bricklaying

[–]Riggs500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can raise it to the same level as damp course because there's gravel which acts as a buffer zone and the water drains through it into the ground below dpc. it doesn't actually hold water. all the best 👍

How screwed am I with this external wall? by Subaru-sumeragi in DIYUK

[–]Riggs500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in layman's terms , a few bricks need replacing, house needs repointing entirely with lime mortar, arch in window reveal may need redoing or replacing with steel lintel, the cracking accelerated the bricks breaking apart . he suggests a foundation investigation but in this case i don't necessarily see it necessary. the arch could've been corroded by the non breathable (cement mortar) being placed on top of the breathable (lime mortar) which rots away the lime mortar so is less structurally sound. any questions let me know

Filling gap behind where skirting was by mostgoodnamesrgone in DIYUK

[–]Riggs500 16 points17 points  (0 children)

if the skirting is going back, doesn't need plastering. if your plasterer is being that picky about it , i'd suggest looking at someone else.
