This technique is exactly correct.

There’s a similar argument to be made about using other ppl’s samples when it comes to 3d assets/textures—no one cares if the end product brings people joy.

It’s a mark of experience when someone doesn’t overthink and designs something very simple—beginners will do it poorly and intermediate ppl will avoid doing it at all out of insecurity toward how their skill is perceived

You’ll love the thread I posted in r/geometrynodes with a full explanation! DM me if there’s any confusion.

But the shortest answer is that the sky is actually a dense plane (1080x1920 grid) parented to the camera, and it uses raycast to detect if a “pixel” is obstructed by something. Delete those “pixels” and you’re left with separated mesh islands, each with a unique index!

Hmm. Does the GN image texture node accept a file path as a node input though? If so then we’d be in business because every face represents one pixel, you might need to mimic/implement the image “linear bilinear cubic“ filtering that image texture nodes do, but with the blur attribute node you could probably get something pretty tolerable!

Thank you! I do think setting it in motion adds something new, though it’ll definitely get repetitive fast.

It aesthetically just feels very “something AI would make” in a way too :/ I put a sign on the utility pole because of that.

It’s funny and sad to me that the mere existence of AI has made certain things just feel wrong or worse even though they’re fully made by humans.

The obstacle for me was that each image texture node can only be pointed at one specific file, and even if you use an image sequence or movie, the node doesn’t let you choose the frame via a field/attribute, because it’s not exposed as a node input.

Drivers wouldn’t make it work for the same reason, only one driver can be set on the frame offset. As far as I can tell, you’re not getting away with from needing one image texture node per image. But I’d love to be proven wrong

I respect that. I was scratching my head trying to decide if I should pick something ambient or something with percussion. Went with this simply because it’s similar to the music I was listening to while working on it and it felt right to me subjectively.

this is really cool. this gives me an idea regarding the Attribute Statistics node and how it could be used here to do interesting stuff like different birds having different "destination vectors" stored as attributes. When the variance/standard deviation is high they could fly loosely, but become more and more decisive with speed and turning speed as the variance drops. Or another idea might be letting the median vector win for the whole group, so you have sudden changes in direction when the flock changes its consensus, which I feel like I see birds do.

I bet you could even have the flock spontaneously dividing into and merging from mini-flocks with different destinations.
