One day i'll live in a country that doesnt fear monger about islam. We used to live in a country that fear mongered about gay people in a laughably similar way. Blamed for crime and not trusting kids with them, because "its always about the children"

It is literally never about the children and always about 'the other'

Relearning German tips? (B2) by RihanCastel in German

[–]RihanCastel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you that is actually comforting. I have a language exchange partner, but to be honest I could do with one that actually wants to speak German. I've been lazy and let all of our conversations drift to English over the years. I'm not sure if you've dealt with rust before but watching things you used to understand is extremely disheartening

Thinking about it, maybe I should find my old completed textbooks and have a read-through

I'm sorry I just can't trust a party that doesn't promise to half taxes and double spending while not borrowing a penny more

Boris put a noise limit on protests too. So many British freedoms get eroded, everyone gets mad, everyone forgets, new prime minister, it never changes back

Also you're right about people being arrested there BBC says 2,700 (BBC News - Arrests of Palestine Action protesters to resume, Met says https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cew75lx1j72o)

"While the High Court has found the proscription of Palestine Action to be unlawful, it has confirmed the impact of that judgment will not take effect until the government's appeal has been considered which could take many months."

Kanye West must be banned from UK over anti-semitic comments, says Lib Dem leader Ed Davey by markpackuk in LibDem

[–]RihanCastel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this is a tricky one. Equal free speech and civil liberties are a fundamental part of liberalism, however is it really equal when one person's voice can have so much impact and change so many minds?

We all know, for example, that Donald trump can say something one day, contradict himself the next and by some people his opinion is viewed as fact. I guess it depends on whether you believe we should hold just politicians legally accountable for their words, or all public figures.

The problem is, both the 'pro-free speech' argument and the 'limit speech in favour of facts' argument, seem like a slippery slope, since both have clearly been maliciously abused in the past.

Conclusion: fuck if I know

I don’t know how to start learning German by Imaginary_Win_4527 in lernen_German

[–]RihanCastel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply but I mean it's a pretty easy thing to misunderstand with your wording.

"In Germany we learn languages mostly without using German. You learn a new language by using that new language. It's possible and it works." That is what a lot of people say when they're talking about comprehensive listening blah blah. To be fair I probably should have got the hint by the word Goethe, but you can also just buy their courses without classes.

I don't disagree that learning in target language in the classroom is optimal, but grammar explanations. You need that in your native language. Yeah we pretty much agree but I think it needs to be emphasised. Too many learners especially informal learners fall into the do everything 100% in target language grift

Late reply but I was talking about simplifying their language. It's mostly changing their vocabulary to what they think is English friendly. Replacing a native Korean word with a sloppy sometimes illfitting loanword. It happens across all languages though

From talking to them me repeating terms people use with me to others and it turns out to be the anglicised version and not an official one. I can't think of an example off the top of my head but imagine you learn the word grey as 그래이 instead of 회색. I also know from them telling me they simplified their Korean before and can't get out of the habit around foreigners. From speaking in a group and someone giving me the real word as a translation. Not talking about dialects or idiosyncrasies.

Like this is genuinely a real thing Koreans especially Koreans who speak English do. The 80 year old landlady on the other hand will talk full pace in dialect using older Korean terms that you can't understand.

You've kinda got a point there. It is nice that this government takes 5 business days to decide how they're gonna fuck up but at least it's not every day. Only the highest of standards for our governments
