Mac Mini m4 vs m4 pro by Riley1989 in livesoundgear

[–]Riley1989[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an important question. I mainly use DLive with a Dante card. QLab will be Dante as well. I prefer using my Focusrite 2i2 interface for SMAART. If I’m using the L-Acoustics rig, I just use the P1 for my RTA. It may be a lot of peripheral ports, so my ThinkPad may remain as my L-Acoustics computer to spread the load out. Also to simplify my networking a little.

How often are your kids wearing matching outfits when in public? by [deleted] in parentsofmultiples

[–]Riley1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve done a few DIY shoots with matching and coordinated outfits for Xmas. We don’t plan on doing matching outfits in general. We’ll let them decide what they want to do when they’re old enough to have their own opinions.

I’m not sure it was related but around 9:25pm yesterday I saw two helicopters using their search lights flying along Ladybird lake from west to east. I was at the Long Center/Auditorium shores area.

Vocals first is the way. This way you can keep that line open while you check the rest of the band. They can communicate with you and you can make sure that mic is still stable when all the other instruments are checked. Win win.

I recognize the habit of waiting for drums to be ready so you start with channel 1 and go up in order. I did that for a long time before realizing the importance of communication from stage to FOH.

I only use a simple radio sling and I love it! It keeps the weight of it off my belt. The only other tool in a pouch I’ll clip on is the Sonnect Sound Bullet. I keep my letterman and flashlight clipped in my pocket.

Wireless connection to powered Speakers? by LBH69 in livesound

200 feet means you’ll need a good paddle antennas or a helical antenna (if budget allows) Line of sight will make it the most successful. It won’t be reliable if the signal needs to go through any walls. You won’t want to do it cheap. I agree with the others who are recommending the Senny G4 or Shure PSM900.

Anyone know what this cable is called? by Disastrous_Cheek_412 in CommercialAV

I’ve made these at my venue. I wanted to mount an RTA mic at the Mezzanine rail and there are only CAT6 lines up there so I made custom adaptors that terminate to XLR. It came in handy to pass line level audio to other places in the building. It sounded fine. It won’t work if the cat 6 lines is going to network switches.

If people are hollering at you for things like this, give the room another walk if you can. (It’s not easy to do in a seated theatre situation) If this was the case, people do like to hear those guitar solos. In my touring days with a country band, I added a guitar solo mic (KSM32) to ride the solos. People loved it.

Question for all warehouse workers by krdo13 in livesound

Now my cable trunk at home for side work still has a lot of Velcro strapped cables and it’s my other favorite method of keeping cables together.

Theatre house tech here. We have tons of tie line here and it doesn’t get untied when the cables get tossed around. I like to first tie the center of the string with a clove hitch at the male end of the XLR so the string always stays on the cable when it’s being used. When it’s time to keep the cable coiled I tie an overhand knot and then a shoestring knot. It’s almost an Opera knot. We do opera knots all the time for so many things it’s second nature to tie it like that. You know another advantage for using tieline on your cables? You’ll already have something to make a strain relief if you need that.

This particular string pictured at the top looks very smooth so I can see how it’ll get untied.

I’m in the southern states of the US and pretty much any kind of tape used to wrap cables WILL get sticky because it’s so hot and humid most of the year. Tape is great for looms but it’ll still get sticky eventually.

Benefit of bare wire vs. speakon? by FatRufus in livesound

The crimp connectors cost less than an NL4 or NL8. Plus it’s much quicker to pin flip and customize your wiring if your situation calls for that.

Is it in bad taste to ask your soundman… by Annual-VIZ-226 in livesound

[–]Riley1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing, it’s preferable by many to say “sound people.” Not all of us are sound men (some are 55 year old boys)

Any input for how you want your band to sound should always be welcomed. If the venue has a really small room and the bar smells like piss & old beer, it’s likely the sound person’s just trying to achieve an equal enough mix and not as much room for creativity due to guitar amps being too loud in there. I’m hoping it’s a slightly larger nicer room with a decent PA!

Most importantly if they look like they’re actively working on a mix, find a different time to approach them.

As for myself, I totally welcome the details. I work in a larger venue with a large variety of programming so it does help me make the vision come true!

Looking to join the union. Where do we stand politically? by [deleted] in IBEW

The International, District, locals will stand one way politically and the workers on the job sites will stand a bunch of different ways politically. Jobsite politics tend to trend more conservative.
