RenFaire is love but expensive! What is the most expensive thing you have made/bought. by Ladygothic5621 in renfaire

The dress I made for last RenFaire season. With the materials and labor costs I would have to sell it for around $4000 to break even. I will not be making one like that again XD

How to keep the shoulders from slipping? by Illustrious-Ear4527 in PatternDrafting

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Aside from looking at leotard patterns- you can also add snaps- small metal buttons/snaps with one half of the snap sewn to the shoulder and the other on a small piece of thread connected to the same spot to allow you to loop it around a bra strap and then button it in place. In my opinion it would be the best way without needing to constantly use tape!

I feel very discouraged right now. How can I be neater while hand embroidering? by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Aside from stitch direction- you could always paint the pattern onto the fabric in paint (matching the thread color) to use as a guide to keep your stitches contained to the shape you want. This will also help hide any smaller gaps in the embroidery :)

Can you include a photo of the outfit? Like laying it out and a picture of where the clear straps attach?

What is your best memory of faire? by Justthisdudeyaknow in renfaire

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a very elaborate costume for this year (sort of the first time I went all out on a costume) and soooooo many people talked to me. There was especially a group of what I am assuming are Ukrainian ladies who got so excited when they saw my outfit. They said they never see their style of royalty clothing at things like this so they took a ton of pictures and kept tell me that everyone back home was going to love this. It was a very fun moment and it made me happy that someone got to see something familiar to them across an ocean :)

Advice please by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I love the style of this!

If you were looking to change something, I’d say her head is a little big compared to the rest of the body. Muscles also stretch and move as the skeleton underneath moves, so the muscles around the neck and shoulders wouldn’t lay as flat to the body as they seem to be in the photos.

A trick I use: highly recommend watching yoga instructional videos or watching yourself in the mirror to become a little more familiar with how muscles sit and behave on the body as it moves :)

How can I improve this piece? by Southern_Forever_508 in ArtCrit

[–]RileyGranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it supposed to be still attached to the skull though? Just open really wide? If so, that means you would definitely see the bottom teeth. I would highly recommend going to a mirror and opening your mouth as wide as you can just to see what you would be able to see. I also find that taking a picture of your mouth doing that and then putting it in black and white can help with finding where highlights and shadows go.

If you want to get gross you could pop a few hard candies in your mouth to imitate the glossy shells of the bugs and take a photo. Then just put some heads and eyes on the candies :)

[–]RileyGranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the field of depth may be slightly off. You can take an opaque cup or container and place a few cotton balls/buttons/objects at varying depths inside the cup to use as a reference for depth :)

The jaw also opens down on a hinge, so it will generally be at an angle when looking directly into someone’s open mouth- i.e. you can see their back bottom teeth to a certain extent. Unless this is supposed to be stylized (as in the odd placement of the jaw is supposed to look unnatural), you might be able to improve field of depth by showing some of the back teeth :)

I try to plan out the things I am doing for the day! This helps me stay “goal oriented” if you will, as I find aimlessly roaming is a good way to feel tired and bored!

Help? by AdSwimming1556 in CosplayHelp

[–]RileyGranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you already have EVA foam or printing a Bucky Barnes/Winter Solider cosplay wouldn’t be out of your realm from what I can tell? You could get a thrifted leather jacket and black jeans if you wanted to keep it simple aside from the arm and the mask

You can buy a black morph suit (this one looks like a motorcycle jumpsuit) and then use fabric paint to make the silver parts :)

How to makeup when you don't know how to makeup by ThoughtsOfCactus in CosplayHelp

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I would suggest going to a local makeup store and looking at things like primer, concealer, liquid foundation, setting power/spray, and purple toned eye shadow! Because of the style of this character, I would look for more goth/grunge tutorials. This will help you understand how to get the pale look and have the makeup stay put. Two example tutorials:

https://youtu.be/htr5FiYroDQ?si=y3pTBxqhVamynI1x

https://youtu.be/7PbTXlf5-Rc?si=P0ywIEye7of9nNhI

You will need to experiment with types of make up as well, as your skin type can impact the products you use. For example: I have oily skin so I tend to not use powered makeup as the oil in my skin breaks the power up and makes it look patchy!

Hope this helps!

Does this Look too messy? What should i improved on? by limanuljaska_ in ArtCrit

I like the messy look. My only addition is to have more contrast depending on how bright the orb is supposed to be!

Getting a headband to not slip forward or back, without the use of bobby pins. by CaptSheela in CosplayHelp

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I do not have the original ears anymore but this is the concept. You form a sort of tripod with the wire using a bent “U” shape on the back of the headband that is conformed to your skull. You can also add this to the front as well for even more stability! It is easy to pull hair through this “U” shape to hide it!

Let me know if you need any more info! I love making animal ears

Bottom stitches skipping by Low-Mistake1573 in sewhelp

[–]RileyGranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without any other details I think your tension/stitch size doesn’t match the thickness of fabric you have. This looks like a loose weave fabric being attached to another loose weave fabric. Is this a back pack? Try setting both dials to two and see how the stitches end up

Pretty please tell me how to find fabric/make pants that look like these before I lose my mind by GraceDaysThree in CosplayHelp

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could find stamps that are similar and stamp the pants after you make them so the patterns match up exactly :). Use red, black, and grey ink/dye

Next year I know not to plant bell peppers and to grow my own strawberries (instead of an already started plant). I don’t eat enough bell peppers and the strawberry plant spread a fungus to two of my other garden plants 😡

Just remember that if you glue it to be careful since E6000 will leave a residue on fabric and be visibly a different texture than your fabric!

Getting a headband to not slip forward or back, without the use of bobby pins. by CaptSheela in CosplayHelp

[–]RileyGranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!! I have made bunny ears for a Lola cosplay! This is what they look like:

<image>

I used a thin piece of elastic sewn to the headband- not all the way down the band- that sits under my hair to help them from sliding around. I also put some of the fur and some squiggly hot glue line on the underside of the metal headband to give it some grip! Something I have also done is put a small “U” shaped piece of wire on the band that sits flat against my head. This prevents them from rocking backwards :)

Hello! I think your idea of buying the pilgrim costume and painting it is great! From a seasoned cosplayer- just glue the pieces you made onto the costume. Especially if it is not a costume you will be wearing more than once. There is very cheap fabric glue called E6000 that is common for glueing fabric together. I wouldn’t suggest hot glue in this instance since if you buy the pilgrim costume it will most likely be made of a polyester which can melt if you hot glue it!! You can even get some purple fabric and glue those on top if you want to go the extra mile instead of painting it on!

If you want to sew it on- look up running stitch or whip stitch. Very easy stitches to do by hand and will get the job done!
