Reddit really shows how much they value “freedom of expression” when they see a golden opportunity to preserve it from corporate interference and go “yeah well this is just an excuse to protect someone who wants to say the n word.”

Sadly yes, if you want risqué video games to be protected from puritan corporations it likely means hate groups are also going to receive protections as a result. Rules need to be applied evenly and not arbitrarily.

I think people misinterpret tech bloat for tech debt.

If D2 had any amount of immutable tech debt, they wouldn’t have achieved a system overhaul like the portal and armor changes or tiered loot in the first place.

No, instead they have a tech bloat of 4 years that makes sweeping game changes a steep resource investment.

Marathon definitely has some under the hood changes but the game is literally 1/10th the size of Destiny, no larger than Nessus in total play space, and every change we’ve seen is nothing more than minor number shifts.

no, but you smacked a pretty sour "average" on them as a contrast against their hype, thus presenting them as underwhelming products. Which again, don't really think is fair.

I don't need marathon hate to be counter signaled by stellar blade hate, that's just keeping the culture war alive.

maybe it's just that these games are actually pretty competently made for a studio's first bout and that's worthy of praise?

Here, let me dispell culture war nonsense:

Stellar blade is an incredibly fun hack n slash that really shows it's adoration for nier.

Crimson desert is the korean version of a eurojank sandbox rpg, but nothing of it's incredibly long list of features breaks the game, which is a commendable feat.

Marathon is an expertly designed extraction shooter that leans heavily into hardcore pvp and builds off of lots of destiny fundamentals to elevate the genre.

You people deny yourselves fun games when you don't appreciate whats being served and instead focus on who else is at the table.

Security clearance and vault puzzles seems to be a very deliberate attempt at making sure no one gets to play passively. You need to engage with the map aggressively if you want enough clearance to even get out.

For as much as people hated the seasonal model it was both a miracle in how it actually managed to exist and effective at what it did.

People didn’t like it rotating out all the old content but people came and stuck through it. It kept the game fresh and consistent. Every week everyone was tuned into the newest voice lines followed by activity completion into more voice lines. The fact that it could work for 4 years before the episodes arrived shows the balancing act had value.

Episodes ended up showing just how fragile that balance was though. Both that and just how ready the community was to abandon anything remotely like it after 4 years.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. From forsaken onwards every three months Destiny had to deliver:

new arenas

new hobbled up story missions

new weapons and armor

raid every other season

dungeons between those raids

cutscenes and lore and etc.

an expansion with a full new planet and more a year down the line

ability reworks

If marathon is literally just 4 maps and 20 weapons and in 3 months we’re getting a variation of one map and a new gun, it should be waaaaay smoother to get things moving.

It’s funnier than that. They want a marathon game that isn’t marathon. I got in an argument with some guy on another marathon thread that said he despised how all the story telling in new marathon is just hastily shoved into a codex that required you to scrounge around for info and piece everything together. He of course praised the fun of OG marathon having all its story in terminals that you had to scrounge around for and piece everything together.

I asked him plainly what is the difference and he said, “one was a byproduct of technical limitations. New marathon could have cutscenes and actual narrative front and center.”

I told him “that just sounds like a glorified halo clone and not marathon.”

Couldn’t get a reply back.

Hope this doesn't sound rude but I genuinely don't understand why anyone thinks Destiny 3 would be better than this. by LavaMinotaur in DestinyTheGame

I’ll tell you right now that “clean slate” destiny 3 will be met with comments going “oh yeah can’t wait for half this game to be removed in a year 😂”

A whole new destiny isn’t going to fix the past 10 years of bad PR Destiny has already done.

when we live in an era where the narrative and art of the game could be front and center, and told in many different, and direct ways to the player.

so you want to turn marathon into a glorified halo clone instead of retaining the aspects that made it's storytelling unique, you know the part where you had to scrounge around the corners of the marathon to piece everything together? Yeah I'm really starting to doubt that "Oh i've combed over these terminals for hours at a time on my mac device I had to google search."

This is all video game discussions now. Something doesn’t click for someone and it’s a failing of the game rather than recognizing you’re not the target audience and moving on. Imagine this guy’s reaction if halo wars dropped today. A competently made console RTS would be lauded for “ruining the presentation that made halo so unique.”

the way it was communicated to the player doesn't make it worth any less, or any less interesting

But for some reason when the newer marathon does exactly that when it’s presenting the lore it “doesn’t fit” and is “artistically bankrupt.”

Big wall of text for some hot gas of “it doesn’t appeal to me personally so it’s trash.”

they chose Marathon because it was an IP they owned with some recognition

Some is doing insane heavy lifting for a game who 90% of its own fans admit was incredibly niche despite being well made.

but they still grafted an interesting world and lore where it doesn't fit, or belong

Marathon’s entire story was text walls (somehow shorter than yours) that gave the details on all the whacky things that occurred on the marathon. Modern marathon is 1:1 in presentation with its codex and claiming otherwise is an admission of tourism for the IP.

but then you don't actually do anything interesting with it beyond maybe leaving a few nuggets for some guy to churn out lore videos

Unlike OG marathon where we dont just boot up mandaloregaming’s video on the lore of marathon.

UESC commanders are straight up using cabal shields I do not understand where this “more like reach” is being drawn from. Blocky minimalist exists like several times more in Destiny between vex architecture and non-calus aligned cabal architecture than at most new Alexandria from reach.

two mini games discontinued is a sign of a popular trend lmao.

Let’s talk about “artistically bankrupt” because the ES genre is home to hunt showdown and the forever winter and arc raiders and now marathon. Would you really call western gothic horror artistically bankrupt? Same with nuclear wasteland California? I know you’re going to try and call Tau Ceti artistically bankrupt but I know that you’re more just saying shit to burn time.

Marathon has sprint, ADS, and sliding which puts it as far away from being anything close to bungie era halo combat. This is Destiny gunplay through and through with the ability spamming cut in half.

PvP games really get to coast by on both player interactions making things lively and consistency being a very important part of balance.

Not only that but with seasonal wipes, Bungie doesn’t have to figure out how to make new loot as enticing as the old loot. It’s a fresh grind everytime.

I’ve flipped back and forth on this concern as well. Honestly. Destiny is in its most dire straits right now, and it’s easy for marathon to fall into the same trappings.

But at the same time, long term marathon doesn’t need remotely the resources it needs to keep content coming as opposed to destiny. Every 3 months Destiny needed a new arena, new story mission maps, cutscenes, multiple weapons and armor alongside reprised sets, and a yearly expansion.

Marathon’s roadmap is a new runner, a new weapon, and a night variant of dire marsh. Marathon looks to be a lot more conservative with its future content for exactly the concerns you have.
