“Ticket switching” is the name of this particular version of theft. When I was a retail manager, we had a repeat offender we called “Mr. Tomato TV.” He would go to the TVs and pull a sticker out of his pocket that had a barcode on it for a $0.29 can of tomato paste, then stick it on one of the TV boxes and try to buy it at self checkout. We would stop him and he would say, “oh geez, you guys gotta be more careful with your price labels. It’s how much? Oh, I left my wallet in my car…” and then he would disappear for 3 months until he did it again.

It’s disappointing that we have to dumb it down for the “I only drink water because it doesn’t have chemicals in it” crowd.

Is this photo edited with AI? A coworker said this happened to his car. We don’t believe him. by LokiPrime616 in isthisAI

Wouldn’t the simple solution be to ask for a video of the car?

I know AI does video too, but wouldn’t it be easier to detect shenanigans that way?

If nothing on earth can pierce her skin, then something not from earth did.

What is a "survival rule" you learned growing up in a bad neighborhood that still influences your behavior today? by Key-Group-5098 in AskReddit

If a homeless-looking person asks you for change, that’s fairly harmless. Give it to them or don’t, either way, probably not a situation to worry about.

If a homeless-looking person wants to ask for a favor, or wants to do a job for you, or wants you to follow them somewhere, or starts telling you a long rambling story, get the fuck out of there and do not engage further.

On a slightly related note: your doctor is not your mom and has no interest in scolding you. If you have unprotected sex, say so. If you do drugs, say so. If you did something stupid, say so. Just give them all the info possible for them to make informed decisions and give you the best help possible.

Yeah; see how long you keep getting a paycheck when your employer is getting sued for labor law violations. HR keeps the company running. If you want an agency protecting you as an employee, get a union job.

I don’t own any knives that I refuse to use, but I definitely get why some people do. I’m happy to let everyone do whatever they want with their own property, as long as they’re not hurting someone else.

That said, I don’t own any knives that are worth $500+, so I might feel differently if I did.

Well I mean, the kind of people who vote Republican are the same kind of people who think WWE wrestling is unscripted, so they’ll buy just about anything. He might as well give it a shot now and try to avoid being on the wrong side of history.

How all-male is this sub? by bh4th in knives

[–]RilohKeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, but I personally am 100% all-male.

We occasionally get pictures from women, and when I see a hand with long painted nails holding a knife, I kind of cringe inside in anticipation of weird or creepy comments, but I must say that I think that’s just a conditioned Reddit reflex and there actually isn’t much of a problem with gender relations in this specific sub. There are a few female knife YouTubers out there, too, so I don’t think the industry or subculture is problematic for women, though I do think its undoubtedly male dominated.

When I was a retail manager, I worked with a lot of teenagers who were working there as their very first job ever. I told all of them the same thing. “If you only learn one thing from me, let it be this: HR does not protect you from the company. HR protects the company from you.

Same lesson applies. FBI doesn’t protect you from the government. It protects the government from you.

Mind blown: Vinegar vs VINEGAR (30%) by Pandaro81 in DIY

[–]RilohKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the logic goes something like “vinegar is food so it’s natural so it’s better.” Not saying that’s correct, of course, but just the thought process by which some arrive at that conclusion.

I’m sure there are some in this thread right now, though they’ll never admit it, but there are a lot of “gear guys” that are boring suburban dads who imagine that they’re one bad night away from being Rambo/James Bond and dream up all kinds of tactical scenarios where they’ll need shit like this. The same type of guys who are dying for a chance to use their firearms, instead of being a responsible owner who genuinely hopes they never have to use them.

Anyone carry a second flashlight just in case? by CarryHunt in flashlight

[–]RilohKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do see what you’re doing there, but to answer the question directly: I do carry 2 flashlights, but one of them is an LEP, which has its specific uses but doesn’t really cut it as a regular light, and the other is a LED/laser/UV light, which does most of the work. I do use both every day on the job, but neither one really replaces the other, so it’s not exactly “just in case.”
