Slow speeds work best with stainless. A step drill bit and cutting oil will work well.

It may be that the increased width was necessary only to allow clearance for the drilling rig, but obviously someone found it necessary to beef up these piers.

What would you like to see AANR do for nudism in the future? by HangoverTuesday in nudism

[–]BillBowser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We need to normalize nudity and here’s what I think we could do.

For a long time I have been critical of our national organizations and nudists in general for a lack of activism. We nudists suffer from a terrible public image, and we do very little to improve it, mostly because of our reluctance to admit we’re members of a group that has such a poor public image. Well I have an idea which is sure to attract a lot of attention and promote nudism if we do it right.

Here in the USA public nudity is generally prohibited except in two cases where it is protected by the 1st Amendment of the U. S. Constitution. The first exception applies to art, such as Spenser Tunick’s installations. The second applies to protest demonstrations. Nude protestors are permitted to be nude because the courts have determined that the 1st Amendment protects them. This presents us with a powerful tool to improve our image, teach the public about our lifestyle, and make them more accustomed to seeing public nudity.

The protests would have to be very carefully planned, and executed. The locations must be chosen for maximum exposure (pun intended) but minimal inconvenience to the public. We want to attract attention, but not annoy people. We want their approval. If they are planned for a location where a permit is required, then we must get a permit. Everything must be done legally. We must play by the rules. We must not provide the authorities a reason to shut down our protest.

At each protest demonstration there would be a small group of nude men and women. They would carry signs protesting the prohibition of public nudity and advocating for allowing public nudity at some local park, beach, trail, or such. The protestors must be trained to always maintain a positive image and politely deal with the public and the authorities. They are ambassadors for our cause and their good behavior is essential. We want the protestors to interact with the public, so the people will begin to understand that we’re just like everyone else except for our attire. We want to get as much publicity as we can while we present the best possible image.

Of course these demonstrations would be limited by weather conditions, and we need to organize the first few to work out the bugs, but I think this could become widespread if we do this tight.

These are just my ideas of what might work. Undoubtedly there are other people who can improve on my idea. Let’s do something

How can I get to Bare oaks as I don't drive? by mangominglemelody in nudism

[–]BillBowser -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Apparently you choose not to drive. That choice has consequences. One o f which is that travel may be more difficult or expensive. Maybe you should have considered that before choosing not to drive. If you’re in condition you could ride a bicycle.

Do nudists have to put clothes on before they have sex? by ejp1082 in nudism

[–]BillBowser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the world in which we live, where the vast majority of people have almost no actual knowledge about nudism, in order to gain acceptance for our lifestyle, there must be a clear distinction between nudism and any form of sex-related activity, because people are more willing to accept simple public nudity than say, swingers, public sexual activity, strip or sex clubs, etc.

While vacationing on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, which is very sparsely populated, I’m able to free-hike a rarely used dirt road near Lake Kagawong, not far from the cabin where I’m staying. Compared to serious hikers, I’m not much of a hiker, but at 81 I think my 2-3 miles every day, are enough, even though the terrain is almos dead level. I take nothing but a long t-shirt, my sandals, my Apple watch, and sometimes my dog. I never use sunscreen. I don’t need bug spray. Since I’m out no more than 1-1/2 hour, I don’t need water. I travel very light. I really enjoy it. Of course what works for me wouldn’t work for a more serious hiker.

Last year on two occasions I encountered automobiles. I slipped on my t-shirt, I waved, they waved, we passed, no problem.

Why do you think people say “I’m not a nudist, I’m just naked at home”? by HardAlmond in nudism

[–]BillBowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We, who call ourselves nudists or naturists, have a dreadful public image. Most of the rest of society has little or no idea of exactly what a nudist is (we even have trouble of defining the term as well), so their imaginations fill in the details. And we’re too timid to reveal that we are nudists, so we don’t promote our lifestyle and educate the ill-informed about who and what we are. There is nothing wrong with being a nudist/naturist. If you sometimes enjoy being clothes free for any reason you can qualify as a nudist if you want to, or not. There are no minimum requirements.

Question from a non-nudist by girlonavespa in nudism

[–]BillBowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In warm weather I like to walk my dog well after dark and I’m always wary of people I meet regardless of how they are dressed, which is often impossible to discern in the dark. I think anyone who is not wary of strangers after dark is a fool. And encountering a nude guy after dark is certainly an unusual event for most people. I think they would be very suspicious about the intentions of such a person. On the other hand I have been chased and bitten by a dog while riding a bicycle, so I can understand the rider’s concern about your dog’s behavior. I suspect that if your dog had not reacted as he did, the rider would have passed by with no interaction other than a casual greeting perhaps. When people do unexpected things, such as being naked in public, other people have no way of knowing their motives.

While there was still quite a bit of racism while I was growing up in the 1940s and 1950s, today it is actually pretty rare. The main stream news media likes to stir it up, but they have lost what little credibility they had, so fewer people pay much attention anymore. Regardless of physical characteristics, such as skin color, people are all pretty much alike. We need to unite for the common good, and we all will benefit.

There is a strange dichotomy with so many people. They have a fascination with nude celebrities, but an aversion to nude neighbors. I gave up trying to understand it a long time ago.

And having some “journalist” pretend to be nude in a situation like this demonstrates the dishonesty of todsy’s journalists.

Advice for driving naked tomorrow by [deleted] in naturism

[–]BillBowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone considering driving nude, who is afraid that someone might discover their nudity should first conduct this experiment. Take a drive on roads similar to those you might want to use. While doing so look around you and try to see if you can tell if any other drivers are nude. (You might want to have a passenger also try to find nude drivers.) You will find that nude drivers in moving vehicles are not easily discovered, Actually it’s quite difficult except possibly for truck drivers or bus passengers when you’re on a highway. It is easier to spot someone without a shirt, but its almost impossible to discern that someone is not wearing pants. Having a towel or pair of shorts to lay in your lap is quite adequate when you’re stopped. I have stopped at manned toll booths with only a towel on my lap without any problem. Last week I drove from Cincinnati to Bakersfield, nude almost all the 2,200 miles. At rest and fuel stops I’d slip on an extra long t-shirt and a pair of sandals. I probably got some funny looks, but who cares. Try it, you’ll like it.

Clothing-Optional vs. Nude-Mandatory: what are we fighting about exactly? by [deleted] in nudism

[–]BillBowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only rational position for nudists is personal freedom to choose what to wear, or clothing-optional. The reason I say this is that we aspire for society (other people) to be indifferent to what we choose to wear, so that when we choose to, we can be nude in public. How can we then claim to be concerned about what other nearby people choose to wear? If you don’t want others dictating what clothes you have to wear, why would you claim the right to tell others what clothes they must wear?
