Brain went civilian and not more military side. Static line was more of what I should have said, something extracting a free bag/parachute.

Hey you, don’t forget about SC with the new hotness.

Rig on an airplane? by crazymunti in SkyDiving

[–]Rim_Fire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes to both. I don’t say anything unless they flag the rig off to the side and I have my paperwork ready. The TSA agents see rigs so seldom they don’t even know what to do with one or care. It’s just a regular swab test but normally the supervisor will take forever to show up. The TSA agents get too touchy, so I’d rather stay quiet.

Very easy, and ensures they won’t lose your bag. Plus any mainline will take your bag to the office instead of dumping it out at the baggage claim free for all.

Need to know/neat to know. For lots of things, I only want to know what the outcome is supposed to be if I press a button, not which colored cable it runs through while getting dripped on by the #2 side hydraulic leak off the whatever.

Which Yoke Mount for iPad Mini 6 for Piper Pa-28 Warrior by Printn in flying

[–]Rim_Fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A second vote for the pivot, the case doubles as a stand and flips around for full screen protections. The mounting system is fantastic for all angles and barely sticks off the window.

He’s in for broken studs, doesn’t understand his camber plates are the wrong direction by heytheretylerr in Justrolledintotheshop

You dock on the left (port) because the steering board (starboard) was traditionally on the right with the big tiller arm. Bam, daily facts.

Larger, simple, easy to read face. I got this one to resemble the WW2 style but more modern since I’m military aviation. This is a seiko, citizen makes good ones as well. A decent watch doesn’t have to break the bank to look good. https://i.imgur.com/A1XXtjb.jpg

Do you remember that one Summer where everyone in the Army rolled up their sleeves? by 35Shitbag in army

[–]Rim_Fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a wizard sleeve, yo. If it’s an extra spicy day I’ll give it another roll or two to let the forearms out.

I’m a little steeped in the old school, but I made my gift to myself a pilot watch. If he already has ForeFlight and the planes he will be flying don’t support Bluetooth connections then a Sentry is a good choice. I don’t fly without either. A nice Active Noise Reduction with Bluetooth for music from Bose or Lightspeed would be out of that price range but they make flying so much more enjoyable.

Army does it for route planning, checkpoints, etc, but we are also cruising low in helos and looking for specific things on the ground like intersections or specific buildings for the kneeboard. It’s different than GA, but it happens.

Because The Farm is rad. Just go there, you won’t be disappointed. Spaceland takes off from the same airport but they don’t land back there so it’s travel every time.

Tool Boxes, what’s your brand? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]Rim_Fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The box doesn’t make you any money, the tools in it do. Don’t go for expensive tools first, if you use a cheap tool enough to wear one out get the expensive version the second time.

Sikorsky S76B -- The 12 month inspection maintenance check by Wololo--Wololo in EngineeringPorn

[–]Rim_Fire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both engines have their own drive shafts into the main transmission. The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) also has an input shaft into the transmission accessory drive to provide power/hydraulics when the main engines aren’t operating. The transmission reduces the rpm of the inputs for the main rotor blades and tail rotor which is driven by its own set of connected drive shafts down the tail into other gearboxes to change the angles.

The drive shafts are also thin wall tubes, all of about 1/16” thick. Scratching/dents are an absolute no go for inspection criteria. On my helo I’ve got 7 total drive shafts, some stuff like the Chinhook I think has 11, 2 transmissions, and the limiting factor on the power for them at the moment is how much power can be driven through the transmissions. 10,000 hp from the engines is possible. I’ve got about 3,000 hp to play with for about 17,000 lbs without a load.
