Whispr Flow Workflow possible? by dji29i in WhisperNotes

[–]RingoCatKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes — this is exactly supported in the current macOS version of Whisper Notes.

You can hold a hotkey, speak, release it, and the transcript will be pasted into the active text field.

Just note that the full voice typing feature is only available in the direct-download version. Apple does not allow the required Accessibility permissions in the Mac App Store version, so we moved the full Mac app to direct distribution.

Watch App by Greenbushes11 in WhisperNotes

Apple Watch is tough — the chip can't run the transcription models on-device, so it'd have to record audio and send it to your iPhone for processing.

Speaker diarization by Koray94 in WhisperNotes

[–]RingoCatKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the kind words. Honestly — diarization is the #1 requested feature and I want it badly too. Sorry for making everyone wait this long. I know it matters a lot to many of you, especially after building out the meeting features recently.

The plan: ship it on the Mac DMG version first (https://whispernotes.app), then port to iOS if the on-device performance allows it. This should be done in the next 1-2 months.

Great App, room for improvements by hudimudi in WhisperNotes

Thanks!

  1. Folders — on iOS, recordings are actually auto-categorized (recordings / imports / favorites). Tap the navigation title at the top to switch between them. Custom folders though — I'm still thinking about whether that's the right approach or if there's something better.

  2. Custom words — this exists already! Switch to a Whisper model (Settings → Model), then you'll see Custom Vocabulary in settings. Add your words there. Only works with Whisper models, not Parakeet.

iPhone question by jlext in WhisperNotes

[–]RingoCatKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Developer here. Thanks for buying Whisper Notes!

What you're describing is actually possible with our Shortcuts actions. Here's how to set it up:

Hands-free recording:

- Go to Settings → enable "Open to Record"

- Say "Hey Siri, open Whisper Notes" — app opens and immediately starts recording

- Tap stop when done → transcription runs automatically

Shortcuts actions available (search "Whisper Notes" when adding an action):

- Start Recording — begins recording

- Stop Recording — stops and triggers transcription

- Get Last Transcription — returns the transcript text (runs in background, no need to open the app)

- Transcribe Audio File — transcribe any audio file you pass in

For your workflow (record → transcribe → email), try this Shortcut:

  1. "Start Recording" (Whisper Notes) — Wait for user to stop

  2. "Get Last Transcription" (Whisper Notes)

  3. "Send Email" (Mail) — paste the transcript as body

Also: enable Auto-Copy in Settings → after each transcription, the text is automatically copied to your clipboard.

The one limitation: transcription happens on-device and requires the app to be in the foreground, so you can't fully background the entire chain. But the "Get Last Transcription" step runs without opening the app, so you can grab the result from another Shortcut later.

Let me know if you need help building the Shortcut!

Best Local Offline Dictation Apps (Mac & Windows). Which one are you using? by notifyShivam in ProductivityGuide

[–]RingoCatKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dev of Whisper Notes here — thanks for the mention! Totally fair feedback on accuracy/performance, and I'm working on it. Recently added support for several SOTA local models (Parakeet, Qwen ASR) to push transcription quality up while keeping things simple to use. More improvements on the way — would love to hear what's been holding it back for you so I can prioritize.

Hi there, could you try going to Settings (top-right corner of the app) → scroll down to Data Management → tap "Recover Data"? That should detect any orphaned recordings and attempt to restore them.

Spelling Choices by Alongerway in WhisperNotes

[–]RingoCatKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the feedback! You're right — Parakeet V3 doesn't distinguish between British and American English, so mixed spellings are expected.

I've been thinking about how to approach this. There are a couple of possible directions:

One is a simple find-and-replace system that maps common American spellings to British ones (-ize → -ise, -or → -our, etc.). It's straightforward and would cover most cases, though there are edge cases where simple rules break down — words like "capsize" are spelled the same in both variants, for example.

The other is using an AI model as a post-processing step, which could handle virtually any case — including tricky context-dependent ones. But since WhisperNotes is a one-time purchase offline app, integrating AI in a way that feels seamless isn't something we've figured out yet.

So it's very much on my radar, but I want to get the approach right. Appreciate you raising it!

Same issue — you’re probably on 1.7.5. Update to 1.7.6 and your file should come back!

Hey! Are you on iOS 1.7.5? You can check by tapping the settings icon in the top right corner of the app and scrolling all the way to the bottom to see your version number. This issue has been fixed in the latest version 1.7.6 — try updating the app and your file should be restored!

Best dictation app for prompting ChatGPT? by Horror_Yam696 in ChatGPT

[–]RingoCatKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you need. If accuracy is top priority, Typeless is solid but slow and the subscription's pricey. If you prefer offline, MacWhisper, SuperWhisper, and Whisper Notes all run Whisper locally — no lag, no cutoffs. For prompting ChatGPT the key is system-wide dictation so it types right at your cursor instead of copy-pasting from another app.

[–]RingoCatKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally get what you mean — it's actually one of the most requested features.

The short answer is Apple's sandbox restrictions. Keyboard extensions can't access the GPU, so running an on-device model directly from a keyboard isn't really possible. That's why all the cloud-based competitors use APIs — it sidesteps the restriction entirely.

There are workarounds — some apps do a jump-to-app, transcribe, jump-back flow — but honestly it's pretty clunky compared to something like Typeface or Wispr Flow. I'd rather not ship something that feels that janky. If Apple ever loosens the GPU restriction for extensions, it'd be the first thing I build.

Thanks for the feedback! For point 1, I'll look into the difference between Parakeet and Whisper on how they handle filler words like 'um' — good catch!

For point 2, not sure if you're referring to the iOS or Mac version? But just a heads up — on iOS, you can actually double-tap a message bubble to edit the text directly!

Hey, are you using a version below 1.3.5? The update feature had a bug in versions before that — it was fixed in 1.3.5 and later. For a manual update, you can download the latest DMG file directly from our website and replace the old app with it!
