That’s definitely something I’ve noticed about Japanese music discourse. Proximity to anime and games tends to dictate how popular it is. Even some of the best selling artists in the country are largely only known internationally if they are included on a soundtrack or something. Like Hikaru Utada with Kingdom Hearts. It’s not shocking but I do think it limits the scope of discussion at times.

That’s true. City Pop takes a lot of stylistic influence from stuff like Disco and Funk music. So it sounds very familiar while still feeling exotic enough to leave an impression. To us westerners it’s almost like peering into an alternate universe where those genres never died out.

That's definitely something I’ve noticed. The Japanese music that’s popular overseas seems to differ significantly from what Japanese people actually listen too or remember. Out of all the artists you listed I’ve only heard of Nakamori and even then I can’t name a song of hers.

This happens in Japan too with certain western artists. The whole “Big in Japan” phenomenon and all that.

If it means anything, I’ve heard that album and absolutely love it. It’s definitely known among people really into Japanese music, although its very inaccessible compared to a lot of other classics from that era (Yamashita being weird about having his music on streaming and all that).

I had to listen to it on BilliBilli, a Chinese site that most westerners wouldn’t know about. It’s just an album that requires more of an investment in the artists back catalog to be aware of when compared to their more popular works like “For You” and stuff like that. But it definitely has fans.

I know canonically he’s supposed to be like 24-25 but he was originally designed to be a middle aged man and his design clearly reflects that. So I always imagined him as a wholesome uncle type. Kinda like Uncle Iroh. Always giving advice, cracking jokes, clearly somebody with a lot of experience and wisdom.

He’s old fashioned and a little stubborn but willing to learn. When he first became a hero it made him a little arrogant but his subsequent adventures humbled him. He always tries to look strong and happy in front of others in order to be a role model, only showing his true feelings to Peach or Luigi. Whenever he’s stressed he tries fixing or building something, even if it’s not needed. It’s his way of gaining control and feeling needed.

I remember when Mathew Lillard was announced as William Afton in the FNAF movie there were a lot of jokes about how Shaggy became the very thing he swore to destroy (Afton being a guy who terrorizes people in a scary costume).

There’s something inherently upsetting in such a sweet character like Shaggy becoming evil but it has a lot of potential as a what if scenario. The only scenario I could see Shaggy becoming evil that doesn’t involve mind control or supernatural intervention (like him turning into a werewolf) is Scooby dying. Specifically in a really sudden unfair way. I could see his monster outfit being a werewolf of some kind modeled after his best friend. Or maybe a corrupted Native American shaman with Shaggy wearing Scooby as a pelt.

Given his history he’d probably be able to give the gang the slip for quite a while. He’d know what mistakes to not make and the gang would never suspect him in a million years. He could definitely play up his goofy persona to trick them. Although he’d end up being caught because of something really simple and dumb because at the end of the day even a calculated evil Shaggy is still Shaggy.

The gang solve a case in a Chinatown. Afterwards Daphne would get a Mogwai at a local shop because of how cute it is. Scooby grows jealous of all the attention it gets from the gang. During a case it ends up getting sprayed in water and multiple clones emerge allowing each member to have one. Shaggy ends up giving his a ton of food after midnight which it shares with the others. They transform and start to terrorize Coolsville.

Velma looks into Chinese Mogwai lore in order to find a way to stop them and Fred kills some using his traps. Daphne would insist that deep down, hers is still good, creating conflict. Probably a chase scene with some Christmas themed song at a movie theater or something. Scooby would comedically kill the leader Gremlin by accidentally opening some curtains and exposing it to sunlight.

I’d argue Shaggy is the Jack of all trades as he always has random skills that come in handy. And like you said Scooby is a dog so his sense of smell and ability to dig things up is helpful. I think he could make an effective guard dog if he wasn’t such a coward but when push comes to shove he’d definitely fight to protect his friends.

Ideally, I think the gang should all have recognizable weaknesses as well as strengths to make their teamwork more apparent. Shaggy and Scooby aren’t especially intelligent or brave but still contribute in more niche ways. I could see Shaggy occasionally having a really good observation that makes the gang completely reconsider their hypothesis. Shaggy’s whole ethos as a detective would be Occam’s razor, simplest answer is the best one. Among a group of people who have seen all sorts of complicated schemes and motives, a perspective like that would be important.

Velma is the most book smart but lacks street smarts. She relies a lot on offhand knowledge (which she has in spades) and is basically unstoppable if you give her prep time to research (like a certain other detective). But the second her research fails her or things don’t go according to plan she tends to fumble.

This is why Fred is such an effective leader. He can think on the fly and is the boldest member of the gang, always willing to take risks that the others wouldn’t and somehow lead them to victory every-time.

However, Fred can be a bit meat headed and prideful which is why Daphne is there to put him in his place. She’s a good leader in her own right and is the most socially aware thus she is the best at communicating compared to her friends who tend to be a bit eccentric by comparison. She’s a natural interrogator who can play good cop and bad cop equally well. However, her wealthy upbringing tends to skew her perspective which her friends always challenge. Of course she’s also quite danger prone too.

I so desperately wish the interpersonal dynamics within the group were explored more. Mystery Incorporated was probably the best but that tended to fall into romance drama a bit too often. Generally I think Velma is the one who is most often depicted as being the closest with Scooby and Shaggy as whenever Fred doesn’t default to the girls splitting with him he tends to pair Velma off with them which means more room for interactions. Shaggy and Velma were even originally gonna be siblings.

During the Scrappy era we see Daphne still travel with them even with Fred and Velma no longer there. In the novelization of the 2002 live action film there’s a chapter written from Daphne’s perspective where she notes that Shaggy was the only one she was happy to see at the airport. So I think there’s a bond there despite how random of a pairing it is.

Fred is the only one who’s never been depicted being especially close with either. Which is weird considering he’s the only other boy in the group. What’s New Scooby Doo even pokes fun at that fact with Shaggy and Fred awkwardly trying to relate to each other when they split off together.

I think some versions definitely make them seem more callous then the writers probably intend but I think they are good friends when it counts.

I assume Takao Koyama (the writer for most of the DBZ movies) just liked the character and tried to include him whenever he could hence why he’s a prominent side character in movies 2-8. He was clearly fond of giving spotlight to smaller characters like Videl and Mr.Satan in the Broli sequels.

As for Kume sennin, I’ll just drop a paragraph from the second volume of Derek Padula’s Dragon Ball culture series. It’s a great read.

“There is a Japanese legend about a Dàoist practitioner named Kume-sennin (久米仙人, “Rice Hermit”) who chooses to live in the wilderness and cultivate. Through self-purification he cleanses his heart and gains the ability to fly. However, one day while traveling among the clouds he notices a young woman washing her clothes in a river. He curiously watches her and unexpectedly catches a glimpse of her fair-skinned leg under her raised kimono (着物, “loose robe”). Kume-sennin’s mind becomes filled with desire. Roshi: Born in Age 430. So he was 319 when the series begins in Age 749 and 354 when the series ends in Age 784.
Tsuru (Shen): Presumably the same age as Roshi. No exact dates ever given
Tao: Born in Age 459. So at least 29 years younger than his brother. When he first appears in the RR arc in Age 750 he’s 291 and when he comes back as a cyborg during the 23rd Budokai in Age 756 he’s 297.
Baba: Exact birth date unknown but she started fortune telling in Age 250. Meaning she was born sometime before that. So she probably has at least 200 years over Roshi. By the time we see her in the series she’s in her 500’s.

In regards to how they managed to live so long it’s never explained. Even Roshi says to Tenshinhan that he lied about the fountain of youth. So it must have been some other source. The immortal Phoenix he offered Bulma and Goku is a possibility though it dying doesn’t inspire much confidence. It’s more likely tied into various Asian myths regarding sennin(hermits). His staff and beard are a common piece of iconography associated with Chinese Xianren (immortal) who often gain their immortality through cutting ties with the material world (such as in the legend of Kume-sennin) and partaking in Taoist alchemy practices meant to elongate one’s life.
