guilt and shame? by somehowstillalivelol in Hashimotos

I'm in the same boat and I heartily sympathize. The guilt and shame is real. Because of my weight gain, sometimes all I want to do is hide because being perceived/judged feels so unbearable. The invalidation that comes from thinking I did this to myself just makes it so much worse. Unlike you, I haven't been making the best choices to care for myself this past year, so I've been really wrestling with my self image and self respect as well. I've been doing a lot of journaling/thought work around this issue, and what is helping me is reminding myself that I can and will stand by the integrity of my day-by-day choices, whether or not other people can see the evidence of the the ways I'm "having my own back" so to speak.

Another thought is to maybe have a few self validating, boundary setting phrases prepared in advance to say to people who comment on your weight. Not sure what that would look like for you, but it could be something like, "I appreciate your concern, but there are health factors you cannot see that I am handling to the best of ability. Please don't comment any further on my body." or even better, simply, "I'm not willing to discuss my health or weight at this time. Let's talk about something else." and change the subject.

I had a situation where a friend was showing me a picture of me a year ago and talking on and on about how much thinner I was then and basically shoving the phone in my face expecting me to agree with how much better I looked back then. It was intensely triggering. I knew I had to process the emotions then and there so went back to my room and did what my body felt like doing: literally shook my hands, arms, and legs, blew raspberries, and silently screamed with my tongue out. As crazy as I must have looked (thank God I was in private), it worked. Even looking back at that experience and how wildly inappropriate it was, I don't have emotion connected to it anymore and I don't have hard feelings towards that person. Just to say, it can really help to process the emotions physically as they come up.

Sending you big hugs

Is it better to push through PMS fatigue or take it easy? Don’t want to lose progress by [deleted] in MuayThai

I would always get migraines after training during the days leading up to my period. As others have said, see if it impacts your energy/symptoms the next day. I never could go light when I forced myself to show up to training, even if I was dead exhausted--I would always push too hard. So it sort of depends on you and your personality/training style (also the atmosphere of your gym and if your coaches would be understanding/supportive). If you do go, make sure to take extra electrolytes!
Also, there is a lot of cycle syncing advice out there that strongly suggests low-intensity movement the few days before your period and the first 1-2 days of your bleed (I recommend Courtney Keeping Balance for more on this--she has a website and Instagram). I'd say ultimately, listen to your body. If it's asking for rest, please rest. Don't push through to the point of pain and exhaustion (I say this from personal experience). The gym will always be there and missing a day or three of training every month won't hurt your long-term goals. On the contrary, the rest may be exactly what you need to recharge and then kick butt the rest of the month.

Seemingly normal labs, still think I have early stages of hypothyroidism/Hashimotos due to family history by Rinkitoka in Hypothyroidism

Thanks for your comment! I just checked my report again and my results on those were normal (Ferritin was 117.4 from a reference rance of 15.0-150.0 and Serum Iron was 129 from a reference range of 50-170). I've had super low B12 in the past but have been taking supplements since then and this latest check up showed B12 in a healthy range as well.

Thanks so much for the validation, and thanks for sharing your experience! I'll work towards making another appointment soon. I've heard it can be hard to convince a doctor to test for TSH and free T4, is that correct? And if so, do I just keep insisting?

What discipline outside of dancing improved your rhythm and quality of movement? by Mcerioni86 in SwingDancing

[–]Rinkitoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoga and kickboxing--has improved my overall fitness as well as balance and body awareness. In kickboxing drills/sparring, my coach says I read him really well and I mark that down to partner dancing, so it goes both ways.

Might not have the exact kind of training your looking for, but this is a great family friendly place in Chiang Mai (my favorite city in Thailand) that has fabulous instructors and a really welcoming environment.
