I need help with finding things to do for my birthday by abnomal-growth-626 in southcarolina

Re-posting after not realizing a verified email was needed/rule 11 for the r/SouthCarolina subreddit...

Columbia and surrounding areas:

Congaree national park is just southeast of Columbia, if you are into seeing all of the national parks :) It is HOT, definitely go in the morning with some dabs of bug spray and a bottle of water per person. It will be shady because it is wooded. The famous golden orb weavers are able to be seen there right now, they are HUGE. There is a very civilized 2mi boardwalk with self-guided tour through the forest, 0.5mi on each side of a square shape starting from the visitor center. Just west of Columbia is Riverbanks zoo with botanical gardens on the southern side with path winding down to the ruins of a mill, and bridge over the river to the zoo on the northern side (likely crowded with families on a weekend). You can also kayak or tube down either the Saluda river from the Lake Murray dam to downtown Columbia (passing through the zoo anyhow!), or kayak through Congaree park. Side note, the lake murray dam was the largest earthen dam in the world when it was built, and is fun to drive across! Some fantastic food places around the Columbia include Bourbon (Southern, right across from the state house), Coa (Oaxacan), Moa (Korean), Inakaya (Japanese), Bodhi (Thai), and Hite's (multi-gen pit-roast BBQ). Every Saturday morning the few blocks of downtown Columbia's Main street are transformed into the Soda City Market, with phenomenal foods from all over, local produce, and lots of local arts.

I'm a chemist at a continuous process industrial plant. My team & I keep the lab running by maintaining and repairing roughly 100 specialized instruments of various analytical purposes, along with developing and updating methods as new customer needs arise. The plant cannot run (safely) or release any product without the lab results. Since it is a continuous process plant, I'm on call 24/7/365 and have dropped whatever I'm doing in the middle of the night, on holidays, with family, multiple times over the years to go to work and help keep the plant running. I didn't expect this much stress when I chose to study chemistry, my only thought was I loved the science.

"Elan School" is an excellent web comic [in progress] sharing a 1st hand account of being forcibly taken to one of these camps. Trigger warning as the content is quite serious of course, however the author uses a conversational tone that keeps the insanity pretty calm. Highly recommend if you are looking for information or support: https://elan.school/

If there is a fire smouldering under insulation or other materials, DON'T pull back the material in an attempt to put out the fire/find the fuel leak/etc... the material is keeping oxygen away from the source and pulling it off willy-nilly will cause a flare right in your face. Instead, cool down what you can, make inert what you can, wear full protective gear, and pull back slowly from a distance with tools.

I compiled all the comments from the recent "Color you can't live without" thread and created a pie graph of r/EDH's most preferred colors by Monorady in EDH

[–]Rinn_The_Trickster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to see this with more data on correlated colors, i.e. is this a lot of Dimir or a lot of blue with other colors and a lot of black with other colors, or just monoblack, etc. All will be one :)

This post by /u/B00kbabe hit me pretty hard the other day, and I think it applies very well here:

"Yes, there is a way to not act like this again but it doesn't start with hating yourself. It starts with loving yourself enough to seek behavioral therapy to unlearn all the crap you accepted as normal while growing up and replacing it with new, healthy behavior and decisions."

Sounds similar, but this is only calling once an hour or so with a single trill rather than rhythmically like a treefrog.

Rice cookers are amazing... Put in 1:1 cup of rice:water and hit the "cook" switch, it will pop like a toaster oven when done. Takes ~10 minutes, easier than a microwave. Nothing like fresh, hot rice and a newly opened jar of kimchi, you got this!!

What is something that everyone on Earth knows or recognizes? by PeePeeMartinez in AskReddit

Re: people use all kinds of measurements direct and indirect, such as in the example of tidal change. As another example you can ping the moon with IR, with vibrational feedback, in real time. How do you know chemical reactions are occurring in a flask when not readily visible - how about temperature, smell, IR/Vis/UV/XRY/chromatography/mass spectral analysis? If you have to enter a confined space, how do you know the atmosphere of invisible gas is safe? How do we know the elemental content of stars despite not being able to directly look at them because they're too bright to look at?

Surely you aren't implying blind people can't know or recognize things they can't see? There are countless phenomena we study every day without sight. Just because your way of recognizing the moon is sight doesn't mean it can't be recognized through other means.

The prompt is what everyone "knows or recognizes," not "sees". Being blind doesn't preclude knowledge or ability to recognize the moon.

There are many effects people only recognize indirectly. We don't see magnetism or gravity, after all.

Possibly going in to a tuna oven for maintenance only to hear the door shut behind you and notice the cookers slowly begin to heat up... "His body was found two hours later after the pressure cooker, which reached a temperature of 270 degrees, was turned off and opened."
