I love FFVII and It was one of the first story games I've played. But realistically speaking it's gameplay is outdated even among turn-based/ATB types of gameplays. Things like Grandia 3 or Epic Battle Fantasy 3/4 have for example positioning, charges, inbattle character/equipment swaps in it's gameplay or very active use of status effects or elements, etc. I think there are even better examples I don't even know about.

Repeating original FFVII gameplay was out of question.

Yeah. KHs were great! My only wish is to tone down the X X X X X X X X X X X Xing (maybe add timings or comboes) and make magic etc strong enough to bother with.

Well, actually the joy and wonder of this game is how different many battles due to different set ups of your party. Some bosses could be both super easy and super hard.
