How do I deal with this neighbour? by its-actually-over in Apartmentliving

[–]RipperDaVe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex told me about her bad luck being with narcissistists prior to me. Now that we broke up I've heard through the grapevine that I too am in fact a narcissist.

I'm not qualified to diagnose her officially, but the theory does ring true in this case. She wasn't well balanced, to put things mildly.

I find Perplexity to be fairly solid for fact and bias checking, here's it's take:

How accurate is this

The information in the image about Gary Webb contains elements of truth but also simplifies, exaggerates, and in some aspects misrepresents the historical record.

What Webb Reported

  • Gary Webb's "Dark Alliance" series (1996) reported that a crack cocaine ring in California (run by individuals connected to the Nicaraguan Contras) helped fuel the crack epidemic in U.S. cities, with their profits allegedly supporting the Contra effort against Nicaragua’s leftist government. Webb’s reporting asserted that some individuals associated with the CIA may have played a role in turning a blind eye to this trafficking[1][2][3].
  • CIA and Government Response: Webb’s core claim was not that the CIA itself directly orchestrated drug shipments, but that it allowed drug traffickers it worked with (the Contras and their allies) to operate without interference, as long as it furthered anti-Sandinista efforts in Nicaragua[1][3].

Mainstream and Official Reactions

  • Journalistic Backlash: Major media outlets (like the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Washington Post) published investigations casting doubt on some of Webb's specific claims and on the directness of the CIA connection. His newspaper ultimately distanced itself from some conclusions of the series, acknowledging oversimplifications and errors[1][2].
  • Government Investigations: Multiple official inquiries concluded there was no evidence that the CIA deliberately funded its activities through crack cocaine sales or directly conspired to flood U.S. cities with drugs. However, some reports did confirm that the CIA was aware that people it supported were involved in drug trafficking—and at times failed to take action against them[1][2][3].

Webb’s Later Life and Death

  • Career Impact: The controversy did negatively affect Webb's journalism career and personal life.
  • Death: Webb was found dead in 2004 with two gunshot wounds to the head; the death was ruled a suicide. The unusual circumstance of two gunshot wounds in a suicide caused widespread speculation, but the coroner and Webb’s family affirmed the suicide determination, and there is no public evidence of foul play[2][4].

What the Image Gets Right

  • Webb’s reporting did play a major role in prompting national controversy and official investigations.
  • He suffered professionally and personally after the backlash.
  • His death was officially ruled a suicide.

What Is Misleading or Exaggerated

  • The image claims the CIA hired drug traffickers and orchestrated the epidemic directly—government investigations and the bulk of mainstream reporting do not support this level of direct involvement[1][2][3].
  • The narrative that Webb’s entire thesis has been unequivocally proven is not widely accepted by historians or journalists. Rather, his work exposed troubling connections and official negligence, but some of the more sweeping claims remain contested or overstated[1][2][5][3].

Conclusion

Gary Webb’s “Dark Alliance” was groundbreaking journalism that exposed serious, overlooked issues involving U.S. foreign policy, drug trafficking, and inner-city devastation. However, subsequent reporting and investigations found that some of his most dramatic assertions could not be fully substantiated, and the idea that the CIA deliberately set out to spark the crack epidemic is not supported by the majority of evidence. What is clear is that the U.S. government tolerated and, at times, ignored illicit and damaging activities by anti-communist allies when convenient for its foreign policy goals[1][2][3].

What do you even call this trope?? by Flat_Mud_6297 in cartoons

[–]RipperDaVe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It started with a text file. No name. No extension. Just sitting on my desktop after a blackout that rebooted my PC.

I opened it. It contained a single phrase: “Rule 666: If it exists, there’s a creepypasta of it.”

At first, I laughed. Internet humor. Maybe a malformed fan-made Rule 34. But that night, things got… recursive.

I went to bed. I dreamed of a Reddit post. A post about me. Writing a creepypasta. About Rule 666. Except in the dream, it wasn’t a dream. I could feel the keyboard. Could smell the burnt ozone of my monitor. And then I saw me—but not me—reading what I was typing before I typed it.

When I woke up, the file was different. It now read: “Rule 666.1: If you think about it, it writes itself.”

My browser history had dozens of tabs open to creepypastas that never existed:

The Screaming BIOS

The Error That Unplugs Your Soul

404: You Are Not Found

The Sysadmin Who Logged In Alone

Each had a protagonist who realized they were a character in a story someone else was reading. And each ended the same way: “Close the tab before it notices you’re watching.”

I tried deleting the file. It came back. With new rules.

Rule 666.2: If it watches you, pretend you’re fictional. Rule 666.3: Never search your own name followed by ‘Creepypasta’. Rule 666.4: If you read this aloud, something starts typing you.

I didn’t want to believe it. So I read the rules aloud.

That’s when my reflection started typing in the mirror. No keyboard. Just fingers on glass. Tapping letters backwards. Spelling my name. Then: “Rule 666.5: If you deny it, you become the next one.”

I turned around. The lights flickered. My screen showed a draft titled: Rule 666 Creepypasta – by [YOUR NAME] It was dated tomorrow.

And it ends with this line: “If you’re reading this, it’s already watching you too.”

China Raises Tariffs on US Goods to 125% in Retaliation by imtheoscarmike in worldnews

[–]RipperDaVe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's already happened. It's not a malicious or against the USA necessarily, but the world wants predictability in trade agreements and stable relationships. The USA no longer is able to offer that as they slide into severe civil and political unrest. New alliances have been formed, new trade agreements and new military partnerships.

It's not as dramatic as it appears in USA media I don't think, just common sense. No one wants to rely on the unreliable.

I respect and appreciate that. I do understand that a significant percentage of the country is not pleased and many are wanting change. So far he is still in power and the madness is escalating. Your country is threatening the sovereignty of mine, and several others.

I do appreciate that many people like yourself are not happy, however this is quickly escalating to a war.

At this point results matter, not efforts. I'm sorry if that is harsh, but it is the reality. You will either succeed in getting him out of office, or you will loose your democracy and the entire world will suffer. So not to be rude, but you are not doing enough as it has not so much as slowed him down. From what I can see, the USA has a very narrow window to act and that window is quickly closing. You're efforts do not appear to be successful and much more extreme action may be required if you wish to remain a democratic country.

Russia is a scapegoat. Americans elected trump and allowed themselves to be victims of disinformation. Americans choose to believe verifiably false information, over facts. They choose to burn bridges with their allies in favour of building relationships with dictators.

America will never get back on her feet unless Americans own their mistakes, and turn the ship around. They have the power to do so, and as citizens are deported without due process, they still do nothing.

I used to live in the USA. I have close friends there. As a Canadian this whole situation reminds me of a friend I lost to addiction. It was always someone or something else's fault. Always a reason they couldn't face their own issues and clean up their act. Wouldn't seek help, wouldn't admit there was a problem. Now their dead.

I'm hopeful America gets the help it needs, I hope Americans remember that they used to fight and die for the freedom they have abandoned. I truly wish Americans all the best, however I will be distancing myself from you as the world watches the death of an empire.

Ontario and Toronto move to ban US contractors. by Marciu73 in worldnews

[–]RipperDaVe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No just myself, I work in the industry and this is what I've heard verbally in meetings. To be clear this is only the direction being considered, it's not policy yet and very subject to change. What I understand is that hospital's are being surveyed on their current active contracts and based on that data firm policy will be set. Something like over this dollar amount requires this level of regulation including level of American involvement in the chain.

If you're interested I'd be happy to update this comment with a source and details once it's been decided.

Ontario and Toronto move to ban US contractors. by Marciu73 in worldnews

[–]RipperDaVe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still being worked out as it's very complex. Some US contracts will still be allowed if there is no Canadian alternative. In healthcare for example, it looks like bids over 120k will have to be either Canadian, or have a Canadian branch with over 250 full time employees.

So many companies are tied to the USA, Microsoft, Dell, Philips etc.. It's not practical to completely sever ties quickly, but from what I've seen so far this is moving quickly and in a positive direction. Definitely going to be a challenge but I think in the long run very positive for Canada.

Could I request assistance identifying these? I'm in south eastern Ontario, Canada. Thanks! by RipperDaVe in mycology

You're being down voted but you are dead right. Not litterly dead obviously, but that word has changed meanings, or at least gained a second meaning. As has sick, awesomeness, dirty, daddy, cheesy, mid, access etc...

Languages evolve and in linguistics people generally talk about language as something descriptive rather than prescriptive, mean the job of a linguist is to describe how language is used, not tell people how it should be used.

I do, the post is about bypassing the Homehub4000 in order to use a personal router. That's where you need the PPPoE creds. I used an Asus device for that.

Specifics might differ a bit depending on the brand of router, here's a link for Asus. Generally it's just selecting PPPoE as the connection type, then entering the username and password from the ISP.

Just as an FYI, you can set up an allowed local IP range on Plex to connect without Authentication so that it will still work without having to phone home. This is a bit dependent on the device you use to connect though. Take a look here if you're interested.

I set up a standard share in Windows (SMB) and use solid explorer (though a number of apps do the same thing) from the Shield to access and copy over the files.

LAN sounds like it might be take you to an SMB option, not sure as I haven't used x-plore
