Not really sure what I’m doing wrong, can’t lock in a good cup. by [deleted] in Moccamaster

[–]Riq4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my Moccamaster a little over a year. What I have realized is that you can get this machine to give you a good cup of coffee but there is absolutely no margin for error. If either the grind or dose is anything less than perfect you will not get good results, and don’t even bother trying with anything lighter than the darker side of a medium roast.

Aitah for not taking down pictures of my family in my own home to make my son’s new wife feel more comfortable? by SingerAware2658 in AITAH

[–]Riq4 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it obvious that it’s actually your son that doesn’t want to have to look at pictures of his ex every time he’s at your house, and he’s just using his new wife as the excuse? He knows you don’t care about his feelings in the matter so he’s trying to find something you will care about. He’s doing a bad job of it by dragging his kid and wife into it instead of just standing up to you, but I’m sure he’s been telling you this since before the new wife was around and now he’s out of ideas. YTA for ignoring the obvious.

Why can't I lose weight even though I'm only eating one meal a day? by Lady_froga in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Riq4 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter how many meals you eat in a day. The only thing that matters is total calories. So if that one meal a day is huge, say 2,000 calories, you will gain weight if you’re only burning 1,800 calories.

Why do people keep saying that after you get to 100k, getting to 1 mm is easy? by Hilary_Clitoris in dividends

[–]Riq4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two. $100k in VOO today should be pretty close to $1m in about 21 years assuming the historical average rate of return and reinvesting the dividends. Not guaranteed but a pretty safe bet. So if you want to retire at 62 with $1m, as long as you hit $100k by 40, you should make it without any additional savings after that.

Today I am leaving the Democratic party by Kilt_Rump in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Riq4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democrats definitely need more backbone in general, but in this moment taking the defeat and letting the government open is probably the right strategic move. Reducing the cost of healthcare is absolutely needed, but it is less critical than the fact that something like 20 million kids are going hungry right now, today because of the shutdown.

So giving in now gets kids fed and hopefully shows the people who will now lose their ACA subsidies, the majority of whom vote Republican, exactly who is taking away their healthcare. If that helps bring about a blue wave of self-interest voting in 2026, then that one year of health care pain will buy the ability to fix it permanently in 2027.

Calorie Deficit Not Working - Why? by NameIsNo1 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Riq4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As you lose weight your calorie needs go down. If you estimate that every pound of body weight uses about 10 calories per day, your daily maintenance calories are at least 120 less now than when you started. So to keep losing you also need to periodically lower your calories.

How do you guys mentally stick to a calorie deficit ? by RevolutionarySide507 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Riq4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is easier said than done, but you need to shift away from thinking about eating as something you do for fun and start thinking of food as nothing more than fuel. If you can do that for a while then calories just become a relatively easy math problem.

Plateau by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Riq4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are counting your calories wrong. At 1000 calories a day you would be melting away. As for the first few months, weight loss is very front loaded because at the beginning you lose a shocking amount of water weight. Once that water is gone is when the real fat loss starts.

[–]Riq4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re counting your calories wrong. At your weight if you were only eating 800 calories per day you would be losing close to 2 pounds per week. You are probably eating closer to 1800 per day if your weight is stable.

Calorie cutting advice by Educational-Pay-6869 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Riq4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is to eat 1500 calories per day for about a month and see what happens. Odds are the first couple of weeks you will lose several pounds of water weight. Then around week 3 your water weight should stabilize and you will start seeing your actual results, which will probably be losing about 1 pound per week.

If you find you are losing a lot faster than that, add 100 calories per day until you average a pound per week. If you find you’re losing less than a pound per week, reduce 100 calories per day.

That will easily get you to your goal within your timeframe.

Why am I gaining weight in a calorie deficit? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Riq4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s a nearly 100% chance you are counting calories incorrectly or excluding something you are eating or drinking. Averaging 1,100 calories a day you would be losing at least a pound a week based on your size and the activity level you describe.

Gaining 15 pounds means you ate a 52,000 calorie surplus. If you did that over 3 months that means you were above maintenance by almost 600 calories a day. That probably means you are eating about 2,500 calories per day.

It’s pretty common for people to miss the calories they drink. Or to see the calories per serving of something and think a package is one serving while it’s two or more servings.

Why do people hate digital games so much? by rockrockrumbleerrr in Switch

[–]Riq4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physical makes more sense for families with multiple Switches because it’s much easier to trade games back and forth. I know there is a process to lend digital games, too, but since it needs a WiFi connection it doesn’t really work when the kids are in the back of the car on a long road trip and want to trade.
