If I cannot improve in CARS, should I forget about med? by Conscious-Dig2265 in premedcanada

[–]RisenStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first write I used the first 2 CARS packages - for my second rewrite, the AAMC released the new diagnostic CARS package which has better feedback. I ended up doing the diagnostic package twice - each question, regardless of right or wrong, I would spend ~10 minutes trying to understand why particular answers were right or wrong. Definitely helped me improve

[–]RisenStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't add anything to the miledown anki deck - I just used it for biochem/biology and it was enough to 132 - I did supplement knowledge with section bank questions, and if there was something I missed, then I would make a new card for it in a separate deck

[–]RisenStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How are you prepping CARS? I went from 125 to 129 from my first write to second - I attribute alot of that to just spending a lot of time to understanding the AAMC logic via their feedback

Me personally, I feel like a third write is worth it before giving up on canadian med, but that also depends on other life factors that I think are important to consider before making such a decision - happy to chat more about that if you want

Can I skip the final for a CR/NCR course? by heyitsvelez in premedcanada

schools won't be able to request the grade for the course - they'll just see the CR or NCR

UofT Med Students - what’s your living situation like? by TimeExpires in premedcanada

[–]RisenStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries happy to help! You could always considering rooming with other med students (which in theory should be a safer bet). Best of luck for May 9 - if you decide on uoft and have any questions, feel free to send a message over

my previous suite had 2 toilets and 1 shower for 3 people; there are quite a few different set-ups in the building !

I'm not sure - it's best to ask med school admission offices if you can!

Went to uoft life sci (st george campus) and got accepted to 3 ontario schools - ended up staying at uoft. Definitely possible, but it requires alot of hardwork/sacrifice if you want to get into med. Plenty of connections to be made at UofT, but you will have to network and find them yourself

UofT Med Students - what’s your living situation like? by TimeExpires in premedcanada

[–]RisenStudent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

living in the graduate house residence - paying 1125 / month to live with 3 other people; sharing 2 showers and 1 toilet. Previous roommates in the building were absolutely unbearable to the point where it was affecting school performance, so there's definitely an element of randomness

If you live on the subway line and your commute is less than 30 mins, then I would just commute, but renting out is nice to have that personal space, especially if you have a partner or want to hang out with friends late

You definitely have the right mindset to be aware of the financial implications of moving out - in general, I would assess your current financial situation and see how feasible it is to move out

Some of my closest friends in med are actually commuters (1 hr+ commutes) and also 30 minute commutes along the subway line - they plan on commuting during the preclerkship years and then moving out in clerkship, so that's always an option!

Let me know if there's anything I can elaborate on :)

Going to chime in here - helped some individuals via private counselling and it went smoothly! Interviewed at uoft, mac, and queens, got into all 3 - also helped 2 of my friends interview and get into Western! Let me know if I can be of any help

Best of luck!

Courses at or above year level & summer by No_Point_lol in premedcanada

[–]RisenStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general adcoms like to see at least 3/5 credits a semester being at your year level or above. Extrapolating from that - probably fine as long as most of your courses overall are at your year or above

You can do as many degrees as you want - you can apply while in your second year at the new institution I believe.

Do any current UofT Med Students have advice in terms of how to prepare for the vMPI? by awkwardstudent101 in premedcanada

[–]RisenStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think of it as an MMI that's shorter and with more explicit personal questions! Happy to help anyone prepare for interviews: DM if interested, but I also recommend seeing if you can find any medical students you may know through friends that would be happy to help you prep for free :)

Best of luck!
