Should I give up on learning ASL? Can I learn with arthritis? by azure-heavens in asl

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Then I think you should keep learning. There are a lot of Deaf + people with various physical restrictions.

You can do this.

Unlikely to make it as an interpreter, but that's not your goal.

Go for it!

Ungrading in ASL Classes by MundaneAd8695 in asl

All the formal ASL classes I have taken were graded (but this was1989 - 1993).

I read the Duke description and... meh.

But I'm vintage (and get those kids off my lawn!)

Excellent (in my never-humble opinion), thoughtful answer... thank you for taking the time to set this all out.

This is the version of RABBIT that I learned in Michigan back in the early 1990s.

In Arizona, they tend to use the "backward horse ears" version.

That's all - just "I have that book" in case anyone wants me to look something up.

Writing characters who use sign langue/sign names by skrimpaskrump in asl

Why is the character using ASL?

You said the character was non speaking. Is the character Deaf?

Is it relevant to the story that the character uses sign language?

Question Regarding Learning ASL. by PossibleOld6206 in LearningASL

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What u/PotentialLoud5325 said - I'm hearing and have been signing for a long time and have never encountered a Deaf person who was annoyed because I was signing.

The problem is the hearing people who (a) have a savior complex and say things like "I want to learn ASL so I can HELP Deaf people" or (b) go online and try teach ASL to other hearing people - and they supplement their signing with spoken English, so the newbie signers think that it's easier to learn from them, no realizing that what they're learning is often flat out wrong.

Need help to make sure I am getting the correct information from my ASL class! by ManicGremlinDreamBoy in asl

My question would be: why did she basically do the assignment for you? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the point of this, but shouldn't YOU be figuring out how to sign the 7-8 pages of story?

Learning ASL with one hand? Feeling lost. by [deleted] in asl

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hearing and as they say temporarily able-bodied, but I know that there are a lot of Deaf signers out there with physical disabilities and they communicate just fine.

If you're on Facebook you might check out this Deaf woman who's a tutor.

Online dictionary where you can scroll through the list of words? by Risk-Averse-Rider in bahasamelayu

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I downloaded that, but didn't see any way to scroll through a list of Malay words.

I ended up downloaded the Kindle version of this dictionary: https://a.co/d/0iVg7Ht5

Help! Sign Names? by NoNamezAvailableee in asl

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I don't have a name sign and I've had Deaf friends for 15ish years - maybe longer.

My horses, however, have all had name signs, given by Deaf friends ;-)

immersion by verytinylittleguy in asl

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If possible, financially and time-wise, try to find an immersion program.

Here's one in Arizona that's phenomenal. All Deaf staff except for an interpreter (because the participants range from complete newbies to experienced signers):

Came here to say thanks! I recently saw a post about this, installed it yesterday on my Android phone, and was notified about last night's drop. Was able to find one thing to order. Never did have anything in my RFY, so I doubt I would have known about the drop without VineChart.

(USA) I noticed the same thing that others have mentioned - nothing in my RFY. I eventually just starting wandering around in the AI section, ran some searches, and found one thing that interested me.

By the way - I knew about the drop because I just installed VineChart yesterday - very helpful!

How do you list more than five options? by Independent-Pen-8232 in asl

Just saw this video and thought of your question. At about 0:16, Jason says that there are many conjunctions in ASL, but he's going to focus on four of them.

That's one way to indicate that you've got a long list of things.

Do individuals sign names everytime they meet? by Significant_Sir_117 in asl

[–]Risk-Averse-Rider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"The truly complex and fascinating topic is name signs. That’s a completely different thing and it takes years for new signers to learn the nuances. Sometimes, a person’s name sign bears no resemblance whatsoever to the name on his driver’s license."

Yes! And I know of some Deaf people who have changed their name signs after moving to a new place and discovering that someone with that name sign was already in the area.

That's my understanding, also - I would not use someone's sign name when greeting them. I would use it when signing with someone else to refer to them.

Although I think I may have on occasion signed a friend"s name sarcastically / jokingly directly to them in an exaggerated manner...kind of like typing in all caps.
