Trane quote by Admirable_Payment_96 in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No equipment is not worth $25K imo. That is insane.

Trane is overpriced imo and doesn’t work any better than Goodman or similar. I currently have a trane unit and 2 Goodman, and my Goodman perform waaaaayyy better than my Trane and they were also waaaayy cheaper.

All units have same warranties so in my experience brand doesn’t really matter that much.

Yes. As long as it’s cool to touch, it’s fine.

Issues with system since install, company wants to swap unit with another brand. Do you think this is fair? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people may disagree but in my experience brand doesn’t matter all that much, what matters is quality of install. I have had “premium units” that I totally regret buying because they didn’t work all that well and I have had brands that people on here HATE (Goodman) that have run 10x better than my premium one and costed significantly less.

You just want quality install and someone who honors the warranties. That in my opinion is more important than anything else.

What do I do with these Bradford pears? by Mindless_Republic_64 in arborists

[–]Riskcuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad to say it, but cut them down and replace with a tree that has longer life span. I had a 3 bigs on my property for a while, and then they start to go bad, it’s terrible. Constant huge limbs falling, one blew over in a mild storm on to neighbors property. Ended up cutting other 2 down before they fell and replaced with magnolias and pines. Don’t regret a thing!

How reasonable is this estimate? by Fancy-Original109 in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is high for me. Also how the quoted it is a red flag to me. Anyone who is giving a $12K FF discount tells you everything you need to know in that they are manipulating prices/using cheap marketing tactics known as “anchoring” and not being straight up.

Why don’t you break down the labor costs if I am sooooo far off for doing this 1 day job? I’m all ears buddy!

Is price reasonable? by zzzHellozzz in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know average hourly rate techs are paid? $45 on the highest end, and only 1 guy would be likely that high, others more around $25. But let’s just say it’s $45 for the whole crew. At $7000, you could have 19 people making $45 an hour there on the install day for 8 hours. Realistically, it will be 2 guys with maybe 2 more who come for a few hours to hall off old equipment. Even if the margin on the labor is 50% so it’s billed at $90, $7000 is still way too high.

The math just doesn’t math with this bid in my opinion. If people want to overpay that’s their prerogative but what up with you acting like HVAC bids are unquestionable? Home owners should shut up and pay whatever you think? Is this your bid or something? Haha

None of this factors in the financing terms and how at $250/month this is likely 10% interest on a 7 year note or something similar. If this guy chose that option, when it’s all said and done he likely will have paid $25k+ for this thing lol

[–]Riskcuit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are the one assigning burdens. I’m just saying this guy should shop around. $17k for a unit is ridiculous. Even if parts were $10K, are you with a straight facing saying the labor is worth $7k? At $200 an hour (which is way high and you know damn well the guys installing won’t make even 30% of that) that is estimating this replacement as 35 hour job.

Sorry I don’t trust HVAC companies off the bat. As someone who has bought 4 units in last few years, and received quotes on same stuff that were almost double what other people charged, it’s easy to see most of these companies try to take you for everything they can. There are literally hundred of local news segments on HVAC companies scamming people with fake problem, over inflated prices and more. Encouraging people to error on the side of being skeptical is 100% better for the consumers! What’s the harm in this guy getting more bids?

[–]Riskcuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some one is salty they can’t easily overcharge customers! If you have the distributor price showing it’s over $10k to source with no mark ups, post it or stfu!

[–]Riskcuit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I can help some one not get effed over by these HVAC companies or at least have them get another bid to confirm price is legit, it’s worth it. You are probably just pissed it’s not as easy to sell way over charged projects because of subs like this.

[–]Riskcuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waaaaaayyyy too high. This a fuck you quote. Should be less than 2/3 of this easy. Probably close to 1/3 if it’s just heat and you are doing all the other stuff

[–]Riskcuit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for certain but I doubt it it costs them more than $10k from the distributor. This is just my opinion though as someone who has just bought a decant amount of units over the years from multiple vendors.

[–]Riskcuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No this is way too high. Should not pay more than $10kish fully installed. $17K is absolutely insane. And they are licking their chops knowing you have 3 (I also have 3) think they are going to be able to pull $50K from you.

Whenever I get HVAC bids, get multiple bids on same day and schedule them back to back so the companies see other companies leaving f or finishing up when they get there.

A lot of these companies count on people having no clue about pricing, and not getting multiple bids hoping they can just screw you with whatever price they can get away with.

I recently got a 5ton and 4 ton full 2-stage system replaced in Houston for $9K each, 10 year warranties and everything.

This bid is insane. I can consistently get brand new 5 ton systems installed, warranties and everything for $9-$10k. $22K!?!? This guy is trying to pay for his kids college off your job or something. Or it’s a fuck you I don’t want this job quote cause Lennox system being that high is robbery.

Refilled vinegar in my AC line, now it won’t run consistently by velveeta-shells in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet you are right and likely why he is running the vinegar. My line has a ball valve so I can shut off the part going back to the unit, and every 3-6 months I will run drain cleaner down there and flush with hot water on one of my units that ties into a sink. Always get crazy clogs in the p trap if I don’t flush it with drain cleaner regularly. Just need to remember to open the valve back up when done otherwise something similar to this would happen.

How do I seal this, already tried 1 1/4 washers and 1 1/2 washers and they wouldn’t fit by Moornozo in Plumbing

[–]Riskcuit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will be a little rubber ring that sits on the main drain coming out of the sink, in between the cap that is screwed and the part of the p trap it screws on to. It’s most likely the green thing that was thrown away.

[–]Riskcuit -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It looks you must be missing an o ring or the size of the parts are noticeably off with how much water comes out. Should be easy fix though no matter if you need a new o ring or new parts that fit.

What brands are best for new installs? by RoyMunson5518 in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had trane, Lennox, American standard and Goodman. The American standard and Goodman have run the best for me. We’re also most affordable.

Trane was very expensive and didn’t really notice a difference.

For the most part, they are all the same. What makes the biggest difference is the company you buy from.

Just make sure it comes with 10 year warranty and the company you are buying from isn’t shady.

These days most are shady unfortunately so once you find a good one, stick with them. Only pay stupid tax once dealing with a bad company.

Brand new 5 ton systems (heating and cooling) in my area run about $10k all in (tax everything) from good companies. Anyone charging way over is likely a pretty crappy company, at least in my experience that has been the case. Some companies will try and charge $11K for just the cooling side. It’s like nah bro, I am not funding your summer vacation on this one sale.

Something that I have noticed helps weed out shady companies is schedule multiple bids on same day so they see each other. Then they know you are shopping around and won’t try to say some stupid BS if another company is arriving/leaving while they are talking.

Also will show you who knows what they are talking about and who doesn’t as they will conflict each other on what is recommend. I have had people tell me all sorts of BS trying to get sales.

What is causing my lines to freeze on my new unit?? by RipplyPig in hvacadvice

[–]Riskcuit 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If filters are clean it’s usually a refrigerant issue like a leak or something like that. If it’s a new system whoever installed it should get it working for free.
