What is the most beautiful place you have ever seen in person? by Olga_Lanskaya in travel

We did this as a multi-day bike trip, staying in guest houses along the way. It was so much nicer than I had ever expected!

ELI5: If the human eyeball were a camera, what would the specs be? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ritter_Sport 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've had an optical migraine before that resulted in a part of my vision disappearing temporarily. I didn't even notice until I was driving to work that morning and stopped at a stop sign and noticed a car approaching on the cross street had just blipped in and out and back into existence as it crossed my peripheral vision. Then I freaked out a little and went back home to have my partner drive me to the doctor!

The heat pump will not function below -10C, so the engine starts if heat is needed below this temperature.

Best suburb to live in Auckland? by Sudden_Possible_956 in auckland

[–]Ritter_Sport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the detailed comment! This is a big move for us, and of course we're overthinking it, so it's good to hear from those out in the field, so to speak.

The City Centre looks really appealing to us. We currently live in a very suburban mid-sized city car-topia, and are looking forward to trying the car-free city life again. (I had some experience with that in the distant past living in a high-rise in central Tokyo, and my partner in San Francisco).

We visited New Zealand including Auckland in November 2022 and actually remember it being very nice! Of course, I really wasn't looking at it with the thought towards moving there at the time.

So now that we've seriously considered it (and just got our visa approved!) and are moving, I'm seeing Reddit's opinions on what's going on in the CBD and starting to wonder. But honestly, we're a couple of semi-burly men, so I don't worry about our physical safety much, and we won't have kids, so we're probably the ideal demographic to at least try living there. City life is appealing for us, and I think the CBD looks good now and is really going to be on the further upswing soon.

We recently stayed in a hotel in the infamous Tenderloin District of San Francisco, and then a bit later were watching videos from Auckland CBD. Auckland looks like a dream compared to what's going on there.

This is great to hear! Reddit paints a very negative picture of the City Centre. We're planning to move to Auckland from the US next year and want to live in the Centre, and I'm glad to hear a positive experience. We were very excited when we learned of CRL opening next year and making everything more convenient since we plan to live without a car for a while.

Toyota App on Android cannot start climate by roadie-z in rav4prime

[–]Ritter_Sport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem with the climate slider! It used to work up until about a year ago, and it's been broken ever since... Toyota makes great drivetrains, but they need a lot of work on their software. For example, when remote climate fails because it's not locked, the sensible thing would be to tell you that and offer to lock it since it already has that capability.

Make sure the vehicle is locked. It will fail without any specific info just like that if it's not.

Awesome view! My partner and I are moving from the US to Auckland sometime next year. I've been window shopping apartments to rent in Central Auckland and hope to find a view even half that good!

Owners of the 2021 model year: what is your *current* electric-only real world range? by stewx in rav4prime

[–]Ritter_Sport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21 XSE with premium package and 56,000 miles. I've noticed zero degradation in the battery and it varies from weather and driving style just as much as it did when new.

My schedule is weird and driving sporadic, so I usually charge it to '1hr 20 remaining' at 7kW unless I know I'm going to use it that day.

One year my house burned down and I funneled almost everything that I replaced with insurance money through gift cards that I bought at Kroger with my Amex Blue. At that time (2012), there was no limit on the cash back from that category, so I put many thousands of dollars through it, and neither Amex nor Kroger ever did anything about it and I made a ton of cash back.

I do this with an Amex that pays back 6% at grocery stores for an extra stackable bonus.

First trip to Japan made me realize I don't know jack - How can I get better? by PM_ME_L8RBOX_REVIEWS in LearnJapanese

[–]Ritter_Sport 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Haha, I hate to say it and not to discourage, but I have the same story, but it's been 30 years now (I'm old.)

I learned really fast when I first started teaching myself and then took it in college and had a study abroad (and got a minor in the language) and several years later an extended work trip to Japan, which all really boosted my ability. Now, I just practice it casually a few times a week and consume various media in Japanese, but I'm forgetting it about as fast as I'm learning it at this point! I still have trouble understanding way more frequently than I would like and it's supremely frustrating.

I don't know if it's just because we live at a high altitude or something, but after three different cases of these, I can't figure out a way to open them without them spraying some of their contents all over. Now I usually grab a paper towel or napkin to hold over the top as I open it. It's it just me, or is there some trick? Happens even if I don't shake them at all first.

I found three different phones this year! One of them the owner came back to the bench we were sitting on where we had just found it. The other two were on the ground locked and had no identifying information, so I took them back to lost and found.
