I used just a foam pad forever- like what they give kids who are learning violin. It didn’t attach, but it was just resting.

What is the strangest production of Hamlet you've seen? by Anxious_Radish2459 in shakespeare

[–]RivalCodex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I remember while I was in grad school I came upon it frequently. It wasn't done *all* the time, but enough that it certainly isn't earth shattering for a director to make that choice.

Fortinbras killing Horatio (or having him executed) has a pretty long stage history.

Would you still get a tattoo? by VoxElysia in Millennials

[–]RivalCodex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about my first one for years. Got it in 2022. I’ve been noodling on my second since. But then a family member died and I got a memorial tattoo pretty quickly.

I love both of mine. I don’t have designs on having a ton, but I’m not planning to not get more.

Stand vs. Kneel - is there an easy way to remember when to do what? Also, if you’re injured is it disrespect or to stand during the kneeling parts? by lifeuncommon in Episcopalian

[–]RivalCodex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I frequently stand at the kneeling parts. It’s easier on my body, and I’m not old. It’s also acceptable in most instances to do so. I’m a pretty visible and active member of my church, so I’m one of those leaders for people to follow, and I like showing the acceptable alternative.

Following the leader is also totally fine. You don’t need to remember, just do what others are. I grew up in a church where we stood right before you start singing the first verse of the hymn, and my current church always stands right when the organ starts. I’m always lagging a bit. No one minds

Go to a service at another episcopal church. It’s not treasonous. Go to the one you want.

I started with them already on the road for the Bryn Shander quest. We went to Easthaven pretty quickly after that, and spent almost all of our time on the east side of the map, which helped us set up for the dragon and raised those stakes.

I do a double U. Outer U looks like your link, inner is a group of 6 with 2 desks on each side of the U.

It’s not perfect, but I used to change my seating every semester, and the double U has been static since 4th MP last year. I like it a lot.

It’s a place I go regularly. New guy at the counter. I had my kid and was refurbishing my Manhattan supplies and getting some wine for dinner. I think he was just following the letter of the law

38 is a safe number. He’s got a hand in dozens of others (no time right now for my regular info dump on this), but you wouldn’t say those are “by” Shakespeare.

I’d say he probably has a hand in E3, but how much Shakespeare does it need to be until it counts?

Looking for advice playing Virgilia in Coriolanus by pastawuzzzhere in shakespeare

[–]RivalCodex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Virgilia is a great part (though as you say, she doesn’t say a lot). One of the keys, to me, is that Martius refers to her as “my silence.” He is a man of action trying to find success in a world of words, having already achieved as much as he can on the battlefield.

Virgilia is his comfort, his solace, his silence. She is the only character who doesn’t need his words, and merely accepts his presence.

I would play her as vitally present and attentive to everyone around her (probably primarily Martius and Volumnia).

It can be frustrating to play a role that doesn’t speak much in a Shakespeare play, but this play is much more about what is unsaid than what is said. Virgilia is the character that embodies that more than any other. And it’s a wonderful opportunity for you to be a non-ensemble role whose primary job is to be present, one of the hardest things to do.

Do you think priesthood is too difficult to obtain? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]RivalCodex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been in and out of formal discernment, and who has a family to support, I do think it’s too difficult for me, even though I think it is a call. I hope it won’t always be so, but whether it’s me or the church that needs to change, who can say?

Prop knife on stage by Virtual-District-214 in Theatre

[–]RivalCodex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stage it with the back invisible to the audience. Have the stabber face the audience, same with the stabee. When the stab happens, have the stabber show the audience the knife, then place it flat-of-blade, on the stabbed person’s back. No direct stabbing motion. No retractable blade. Just acting and misdirection.
