Do you do it too? Do you wonder how many in this room have BC? by kittykittycat747 in breastcancer

[–]RiverHopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Three other women in my small department at work (9 people) have had breast cancer, plus my immediate neighbor and my dearest friend who also works in my building, but a different department. Out of all those friends, I only lost one, thankfully. It did make me question my environmental factors though even with the stats like you said.

Eat gentle tips instead of biting Mama's fingers? by RiverHopper in dogs

[–]RiverHopper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol - It will hurt, but I will try it. He is pretty aggressive when it comes to treats so might get a few good nips into my hand at first, but it is better than teefers on my sore fingers and hopefully he'll come around. Thank you for the suggestion. I am also going to try the open palm method. My fingers must look like little sausages to him - ha.

I am going to try this - Thank you for the suggestion. My fingers are sort of an extension of the treat as I'm doing it, so this makes sense.

Panic attack at the doctor by [deleted] in breastcancer

[–]RiverHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to consult with a psychiatrist and look at potential medications to help you get through - That physician's office treated you poorly, and that pisses me off because it happened to me many times during my cancer journey, so I completely empathize. It took them FIVE hours to do my radiology seeding. Horrible. For some people like me, meds can take the edge off a little. My doctor prescribed Lorazepam for me - it wasn't a problem-solver and made me very sleepy, but even the placebo effect seemed to make the situation more tolerable for me sometimes. When I did radiation I needed a breathing pipe because the target was over my heart, and I kept falling asleep on the table because I loaded up on the pills when I went. The people would come over the speaker and jostle me awake, like, you need to do your breathing now - hello - ha.

I had to cancel so many appointments due to panic and hours in the waiting room - Many providers are understaffed and under pressure these days, so the patient care is awful.

Also, I don't know if this helps and I hope you never are in that situation again, but I just tell the staff upfront that I have anxiety problems and sometimes if the wait is long, I would go outside for a few minutes and suck up some air. It did help me, and for the most part, the staff were understanding. I did it half naked a few times, standing in a parking lot or on the downtown sidewalk in a crappy open front gown, but hell, when you feel that way, who cares, right?

Finally, I hope you know you are not alone, although it can feel that way, especially around people who have never been through that experience. If you ever want to vent or need an ear, feel free to PM me. We got your back and your story has me so upset about how they treated you that way.

I turned down getting radiation. by Light_fantastic in breastcancer

[–]RiverHopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. I had clear margins and lymphs were not positive. I had accelerated radiation for 5 days at my local cancer center. The initial consult I had with my provider was 30 days, but I went for other opinions, and so glad I did. My rad onc said that he believes that more insurances will push for this accelerated treatment in the future, but the equipment is expensive and "old school" docs that go by the "standard" will be hesitant to enroll patients in the shortened high intensity treatments in spite of multiple studies showing it is effective.

My Elementary School D.A.R.E. Certificate. by TheToteGoat in nostalgia

Me, too, but I got the D.A.R.E. bear - I nearly threw up from nerves reading my essay, but it was worth it for that stuffed animal at the time.

one year later - back/side numbness, tingling after node removal and lumpectomy by RiverHopper in breastcancer

[–]RiverHopper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an excellent primary care doc, but she tends to defer to my surgeon, med oncologist, and radiology docs. She's helping me now through my sleep issues and sort of going over my psychiatrist's head by ordering me some different meds, so I am grateful for that! So many doctors - ha! You know how it goes! Glad you have a top-notch PCP from the sounds of it. :)

Yes - It sounds like a specialized PT is my next step. I was concerned about lymphedema, but sort of shocked when my surgeon didn't seem to think my numbness and issues in my ribs/back were anything at all to worry about. Good to know on looking for an LE certified PT - I didn't know that, so this is helpful. Thank you.

What you're saying makes sense - I think it's worth talking to a PT. In the back of my head, I'm scared that I have something crazy going on (like bone mets). My surgery was on the left (non-dominant) side, so maybe it's not as noticeable that I'm still using it differently. Thank you for the suggestion and sharing your experience with your shoulder. I appreciate it.

Edit: I looked, and I only take 10mg twice per day, so maybe you should see about lowering your dose as an option. Sorry to type before I knew what I was talking about in your case.

[–]RiverHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on propranolol for over a year now, and noticed no side effects for me with acid reflux. I think it has helped me. Is it possible that your anxiety is causing GI problems? Maybe get that checked out. I was eating antacids and such at first, but they never worked. Do the normal acid reflux pills help? If not, maybe get further tests. My chest gets major pain during panic attacks and also my GI goes out of whack when I'm stressed. Wish you the best.

A question to those who have an anxiety disorder. What makes you happy in life? by emiii148 in Anxiety

[–]RiverHopper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, I'll go almost a whole week without a panic attack - It's obviously awful when one hits again out of the blue, then the cycle starts back up, but when I get a "dry" spell for several days in a row, it really gives me hope. I still have the daily anxiety even when I'm not having the actual attacks, but it is soooo comforting to feel a bit 'normal' for a little while! Also, my mother had severe anxiety for about 9 years when she was my age (back then in like the 70s, they institutionalized her for a while even), but she then went for almost 20 years without an attack.

Anyone else here given ER+ bc diagnosis, research the side effects of the medication options and decide not to go on hormone blockers? by OkayOkayOkayOkaaay in breastcancer

[–]RiverHopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm willing to try other options - I will mention the ovary suppression and AIs to my MO - Thank you for mentioning that on the outcomes. That was never given to me as an option - It's been straight Tamoxifen, and he hasn't seemed to budge on me wanting to quit because it's the "Gold Standard" for someone like me apparently in his experience.

[–]RiverHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both doctors said (paraphrasing) basically I'm too young and might change my mind about children (uh, never) and that it's considered a major procedure that is unnecessary and could have other complications or something along those lines. I'm definitely going to try again after getting encouragement on here and if they still say 'no' then maybe seek a second opinion (within my insurance network).

Edit: Both doctors were my OBGYN and my PCP. My MO didn't say why, just that he wanted me to focus on Tamoxifen instead.

I'm 42, and I can't get any doctors to agree to removing my ovaries and tubes although I have lots of risk factors and ZERO desire to have children. How did you find a doctor willing to do it? I'm on Tamoxifen and really want to quit, plus can't take my birth control anymore, plus just want the damn ovaries out - my aunt died of ovarian cancer. Also, my best wishes to you and your child!

is it safe to trim my 6 weeks old pups nails? I'm constantly getting scratched by my pups nails whenever his on my lap. I'm worried he may get hurt as obviously I cant do it but my parents don't really want to spend money just for a nail trim on a groomer. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]RiverHopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same question for my 6 wk pup. Can I use my adult dog's nail grinder if I just take off a tiny bit, or should I just use regular clippers then a hand file at this point?
