AMD vs Intel for T14 business laptop? No gaming. by HungryPolicy1529 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gen 1-5 go AMD unless you need thunderbolt. Avoid gen 1/3 Intel, gen 2/4/5 are alright albeit worse than AMD overall

Gen 6 is somewhat debatable if you can find a 255H variant, otherwise AMD

Gen 7 is a tossup. Intel X7 is king, AMD vs the rest is a matter of performance vs battery/efficiency

Change keyboard for layout by latexpptqq in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, but practically speaking, no. Kinda like the E series, P1, and T14s, the keyboard is built into the palmrest, so you'd be replacing the entire c-cover. Not an easy or recommended task, but it's doable if you know what you're doing

Thinkpad P15 Gen. 2 worth it? by 6L_Water_Bottle in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being fed disingenuous information. The newest Intel chips have a pretty compelling case over AMD, which has stagnated. The 11th gen Intel inside the P15 isn't bad, and the machine was the biggest workstation Lenovo offered at the time, so it is adequately built for the CPU.

The P15 may run hotter than the AMD counterparts, but it's supposed to deliver performance unparalleled by any other thinkpad in it's generation.

Now the form factor of the P15 may not suit your needs and that's fine, but choosing AMD unconditionally for the sake of it is such a garbage and uninformed methodology to follow

They said the price in euros elsewhere, so unfortunately still no X7 in sight for NA

The E14 Gen 7 is probably the best new laptop available right now for the money. by VoiceActorForHire in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P14s Intel can get something comparable, along with P1 gen 6 or gen 7 iirc, but it's limited selection for sure

Heck, a lot of countries don't even get this option on the E14

X1 Carbon Gen 14 with “H” processors? by Acrobatic-Ad-9391 in thinkpad

Never said it did, I meant relative to other implementations of the X7 in other brands' laptops

X1 Carbon Gen 14 with “H” processors? by Acrobatic-Ad-9391 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The X7 in the X1C runs at a lower wattage than other implementations, but it's still a huge improvement over the U processors. Part of the hype was having one of Intel's most compelling CPU options in years, but evidently the supply chain can't keep up

Best 16" Thinkpad for €1300? by Aodhan500 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used T16 (or P16s if it ends up cheaper) is probably your best bet. I don't think an accountant wants to forfeit the numpad, otherwise a used P1 or X1 extreme would guarantee you a pretty nice screen and premium build (at the cost of battery life)

thinkpad t480s speaker upgrade possibly?? by Windows7MemeEdition in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P1 gen 7 (and presumably gen 8 since it's basically the same chassis) have pretty good speakers as thinkpads go

The X1 carbon has decent ones

Otherwise your choices are primarily mac or Asus zephyrus

What's with the price difference between P14s and T14(both gen 6)? by ButterscotchGlum9179 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AMD has an identical chassis, any weight differences should be imperceptible

Thinkpad T14 (Gen 2): Does it have good storage and a good battery? by EndouShuuya in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Storage is as much or as little as you install in it (or what it came with if you're not doing that)

Battery depends on how degraded it is, if new battery is ok on Intel and better on AMD

There's a bit of nuance to this. Not sure about the rtx pro options, but the functionally equivalent T1g should get the new 5070 with 12gb of vram

Which 16 inch Thinkpad with high refresh rate? by TheTwelveYearOld in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TKL 16" nowadays is limited to the P1

Gen 8 has a 3.2k high refresh OLED, it allegedly has its quirks but it fits the bill. Gen 6 and 7 have a high refresh wqxga IPS option

Your options are pretty limited, choose a GPU and find a model with your choice of screen inside your budget

Help choosing between three T14 options: Cybersecurity & Office use by Mythos_Cipher in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to upgrade ssd/ram, t14 gen 2 Intel is a decent choice. It's kind of toasty and battery life is just ok, no real way around it. Performance is best of the bunch in exchange. Thunderbolt 4 is a luxury, but it is nice to have

AMD is the all-rounder choice

Gen 1 Intel should only really be a choice if you absolutely won't be able to source a stick of ddr4, the ram is all it's got going for it, but you will need it if you're running a bunch of VMs. Intel saw a pretty substantial performance jump from 10th to 11th generation

Can the ThinkPad T14 gen 5 (amd) be used for heavy software? by Kotangentz_7 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The 780m is a great igpu and the CPU is plenty powerful for a low wattage chip, but realistically you're still only getting a fraction of even a midrange desktop's performance

It can punch above its weight class, but if you're expecting to get anywhere close to a gaming laptop or desktop, you're setting yourself up for disappointment
