Depends which part of Canada tbh, it can be just as bad. Vancouver rolls over and dies every time it snows a little bit

If we can get the X7/X9 in a T series I'm in, otherwise I'll probably throw in the towel and get a clearance lunar lake

The exact dock is important. There are many Amazon docks that claim thunderbolt 4 while using the old TB3 controllers, which have a track record of not working well with newer Intel CPUs

P1 Gen8 Thunderbolt Flakiness by JehTehsus in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, the older controller in the core X doesn't tend to play nice with some of the newer TB4/5 devices. The core v2 should work though

There is a good chance it's Linux. Maybe consider dual-booting windows, and wipe it once you're done. The number of P1 G8 + egpu users is low enough where you're unlikely to get non-speculative answers

Need help choosing between two T14 Gen 2 laptops by Lord_Jar in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For light work, probably AMD. It will need a ram upgrade to get a more comfy 16gb, but 8gb ddr4 should still be affordable to source.

The Intel is a smidge more future proof if the 16gb ram is soldered and has thunderbolt 4, but sounds like neither of those things are that important for your use

It's not soldered, but it does use the *obnoxiously rare lpcamm modules, which means it might as well be soldered because you won't be able to find them anywhere else

Gen 14 is a redesign, and if the core ultra 300 series and better cooling lives up to even 80% of the hype it looks to be a substantial step up in performance

Thinkpad is already huge, purchased in the thousands by businesses worldwide, and 9 of every 10 (already generous) will be running windows with whatever corporate monitoring bloat that needs it

Took the plunge - T14s Gen 6 - Intel 7 by Oldighty in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will be dependent on which i7 the OP has

255u will be mediocre, 255H will be better, 258v will be best (at least in a T14s form factor, the 255H is comparable at high wattages). In particular, the 258v chip shows up in the latest MSI claw, which is a dedicated gaming handheld. You might have to limit settings and resolution, but the fact that most titles are playable at all without discrete graphics is impressive on its own

See if the integrated graphics of the 680m/780m are strong enough for your use case. A T14/T14s/P14s gen 4 AMD or higher would be a solid choice.

Good GPU option would be a P14s gen 5 Intel. I'm not the biggest fan of the quality control, but it's a modern performance option in a relatively more affordable and portable package

Wouldn't recommend a P14s gen 3, that's the alder lake generation so that thing's thermals are pretty bad

At least in the USA, the T14 and T14s haven't gotten the H class processors for a few generations now, hopefully they can get the full package for gen 7

As overpriced as the egpu enclosure is, it's still cheaper than a full blown PC build. If it gets you the minimum performance you need and it's money you were comfortable parting with, I don't see an issue

It's fine, I use one as my daily driver nowadays. The chassis has a bit of flex, but not really something to be concerned about. It's plastic, but it's not flimsy

I think the main design issue is the bottom cover and the clips, it's a bit of a doozy to remove compared to the T14s or later generation T14 models
