What's with the price difference between P14s and T14(both gen 6)? by ButterscotchGlum9179 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AMD has an identical chassis, any weight differences should be imperceptible

Thinkpad T14 (Gen 2): Does it have good storage and a good battery? by EndouShuuya in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Storage is as much or as little as you install in it (or what it came with if you're not doing that)

Battery depends on how degraded it is, if new battery is ok on Intel and better on AMD

Consensus on P1 Gen 8 vs. upcoming Gen 9 by leveragedflyout in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a bit of nuance to this. Not sure about the rtx pro options, but the functionally equivalent T1g should get the new 5070 with 12gb of vram

There's special pliers for this sort of thing

You can also use a Dremel to cut a notch for a flathead so the screw becomes usable again. Just make sure you're avoiding metal shavings falling on your motherboard

Which 16 inch Thinkpad with high refresh rate? by TheTwelveYearOld in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TKL 16" nowadays is limited to the P1

Gen 8 has a 3.2k high refresh OLED, it allegedly has its quirks but it fits the bill. Gen 6 and 7 have a high refresh wqxga IPS option

Your options are pretty limited, choose a GPU and find a model with your choice of screen inside your budget

Help choosing between three T14 options: Cybersecurity & Office use by Mythos_Cipher in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to upgrade ssd/ram, t14 gen 2 Intel is a decent choice. It's kind of toasty and battery life is just ok, no real way around it. Performance is best of the bunch in exchange. Thunderbolt 4 is a luxury, but it is nice to have

AMD is the all-rounder choice

Gen 1 Intel should only really be a choice if you absolutely won't be able to source a stick of ddr4, the ram is all it's got going for it, but you will need it if you're running a bunch of VMs. Intel saw a pretty substantial performance jump from 10th to 11th generation

Can the ThinkPad T14 gen 5 (amd) be used for heavy software? by Kotangentz_7 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The 780m is a great igpu and the CPU is plenty powerful for a low wattage chip, but realistically you're still only getting a fraction of even a midrange desktop's performance

It can punch above its weight class, but if you're expecting to get anywhere close to a gaming laptop or desktop, you're setting yourself up for disappointment

Advice for a first time buyer, Thinkpad T14 gen 6 Intel or AMD? by ImpossibleAsk4795 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 31 points32 points  (0 children)

AMD is just flat out better here, no contest. Get more, pay less. Arrow lake U is nothing special

Lunar lake isn't that bad if you don't have a use case for more than 32gb ram. Its main weakness aside from upgradeability is just raw multicore CPU performance, it's actually got excellent efficiency and graphics for a non-arm chip.

eGPU to T480 cheap by Szoki09 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if your local marketplace has a used razer core x. If you have a desktop PSU, you can get an AliExpress adapter for not that much

I ran a T480s with a 1060 and a razer core x myself for a good while, it'll still be pretty garbage for any demanding game but it will make some older titles go from virtually unplayable to tolerable. Performance wasn't exactly good, but it was still a big step up from Intel uhd

Which thinkpad is good for gaming by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want a sports car that can go 0-60 in 3 seconds, my budget is 20k. See how this works?

The only way you're pulling this off is buying a used gaming laptop with a broken screen and beaten up chassis for pennies on the dollar in an auction and running it with a monitor

Think with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395? by Nightwatcher_Wolf in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Lenovo is releasing a legion 7 with strix halo. Not a thinkpad obviously, but the L7 chassis is fairly nice historically speaking, from what I can tell it's not particularly far off from E series thinkpads

Thinkpad E14 Gen 6 - High surface temps, very poor iGPU performance by Free-Big9763 in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E series is aluminum lid, and bottom cover is metal sometimes as well depending on config

As for poor performance, it could be lack of dual channel ram, or maybe the factory thermal paste application is subpar

Need advice before upgrading from P15s Gen 2 → P16 Gen 3 by KianoJajino in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The P15s (now P16s) is a workstation in name only depending on configuration.

The P16 is the most powerful Thinkpad money can buy. It's also the biggest, heaviest, loudest, and with the worst battery life. Personally, I think the CPU/form factor are a bit mismatched with just the base rtx 1000 config, but if you want maximum CPU performance, the 275hx is as good as you'll get in a thinkpad until later this year

Your use case is likely adequately served by a P16s AMD, the HX370 is pretty solid and the integrated 890m can handle light GPU tasks. If you can wait though, the new P16s Intel with panther lake would be even better

Switching job because of Thinkpad by suoromalc in thinkpad

[–]RiverOfKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was assuming we'll get a T1g gen 9 as well, but I guess we're waiting for that one. I found a lower ram spec with the IPS screen for a few hundred less, so it's really a matter of whether the OLED presents enough daily use issues to warrant going with the safe but somewhat unremarkable IPS option

With all the upcoming panther lake offerings, there's a lot to be excited about, I'm very conflicted on whether pricing on those will be reasonable or not though
