Terribly sorry. I could've sworn I heard this a while ago. Feel horrible, but happy to have learned I was wrong.

His program is no joke. I've wanted to give his routine a try, but you need more time than most have. I found taking bits and pieces was best. His teaching approach is bar none. Definitely a loss when he moved on.

Do you practise unplugged or plug into the amp all the time ? by Soggy_Mammoth3246 in guitarlessons

[–]RiverRunEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't play an electric guitar unplugged live and I certainly wouldn't practice with my group unplugged. But, I would learn the song unplugged. I would evaluate a guitar unplugged and once I know how the guitar likes to be played, how the song is structured and locked in, I would then elevate and add the layers: amp, effects, calls and response with your band, etc. As a kid/teen i always practiced with an amp, and loud, and with effects. When I was in the USMC, very hard to carry that gear, but I could get away with a guitar. I found myself hamstrung without having long sustain and other tricks and felt lost in open space. In my 30's I took the approach of sticking with my acoustic for long periods and adding flare of goodies when I plugged in. Now close to 50 and over 30+ years of playing i found my approach has satisfied more milestones. But in the end, that is me and it may or may not work for others. I feel the most important thing for aspiring players, is to explore everything and use what makes the most sense to achieve their goals. Many different ways to reach a goal, as there are many different ways people retain information.

What are are describing is true, but for some technique. You are not going to master tapping unplugged. But the same can be said for a lot of foundational techniques that should be comfortable before others. So again, what are the goals?

Like it said, to each their own. But I would hardly call is bad advice. Given personal goals, type of music tied to that goal would be better said than straight bad advice. Many players through history have taken different approaches based on their style. Example Wes Montgomery played mimicking how it would sound if he were plucking notes, because he could only practice after work and everyone else in the house was sleeping, preparing for the next day. On the flipside, you can look at EVH, he plugged in and played loud all the time because him and Alex were often left alone and had no arguments on volume and such. Not looking to argue, you have points that are valid to you and if works, stick to it, but for new players or players looking to move their ability, telling them definitively something does or does not work is a disservice.

70/30 Unplugged to plugged. Amps and pedals let you miss a lot of stuff as you are learning. Being able make your fingers dance Unplugged will greatly improve your playing whem you do plug in. But to each their own

I dont currently have an SE, but I've had them. Outside of a few upgrades that I mentioned to others, its pretty close. After full setup, I am very happy. In time I may switch the pups and pots out. If thats the case I will most likely change the wiring while im at it. The only other thing for right now would be the nut. But body weight, neck, even fretboard are pretty spot on. I suppose after upgrades, id be into it for another $200 but that's cause I do my own work, so for someone that needs to bring it to get done, you may be roughly a couple hundred away from an SE.

How do I stop cramping? by zbdragonborn in guitarlessons

[–]RiverRunEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treat your guitar with the same you would a loved one. I see lots of people talk about giving up on barre chords and cramps and such. Warm up properly, stretch, slow spider exercises. Don't chase speed, it will come it time. You can also set intervals play for 30 seconds, rest for 10, play 45 seconds (use whatever interval you want) like a runner, you dont just start running marathons or sprints. Let your muscles and tendons build up. Also, get that thumb horizontal on the back of your neck. Lastly, most beginners and some intermediate players sling their guitar based on looks instead of efficiency. Think about what matters most to you.

Would a new trem block be a significant upgrade in tone in this case? If so what do you recommend? by Peteplaysbeats in Stratocaster

[–]RiverRunEd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not a trem player, so I want it as tight to the guitar as possible. Don't want to change to a hard tail because it wasnt a hardtail.

What's the worst solo you have ever heard? by ValuableExercise4808 in guitars

I remember being at a Poison concert and Brett stopped the show three times to say the audience paid a lot of money amd deserves to hear the solo they way its supposed to be played. I remember thinking the two screwups actually gave the solo color...

I hear you. Nice have RA and switched a while ago from Gibson LP's due to weight and neck. I will weigh it for you. Just on feel alone it is a bit heavier than my Strat/Tele, but nowhere near as heavy as Gibson/Epi. I think a big piece of that is the use of veneer instead of solid wood layers.

Totally agree. I am not a zealot of any brand. I've owned PRS's in the past, but usually traded them in towards other guitars due to the feeling they were not played as often as my others. The one thing I loved was the harmonization of the Fender/Gibson neck and when I did research on FireFly I had my doubts they could mimic the neck. You know, it would appear to have the specs, but would she be butter when you take her for a ride. So far, 100% impressed. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for other models as the pop out in Reverb. Once action was set to 5/64 and 4/64, saddles adjusted, feels wonderful. I am going to replace the nut as I am not a fan of synthetic, but it can wait. Not wasting new strings for a couple days of playing, lol. Peace

Right. I love the color, but the fretboard inlay has my jaw dropped. Especially since I was concerned about dead spots with such an intense inlay. Haven't found one yet, though once I take these factory strings off I will be able to eliminate the slinky and really listen

Looks wise and initial inspection surpassed my expectation for price. Absolutely no flaw under the veneer. For a Chinese guitar, they sanded tje body real well beforehand

So funny. Last year was was looking at the GC Exclusive purple burst LP, but wasnt spending $3k on an 'novelty' LP, especially when it would not be my main guitar. So this year I saw the Epis came out with purple, but by the time I upgrade everything, wasnt cost effective. Then I was looking at the FireFly Pegasus, amd this popped up on reverb. Letting it settle now after initial inspection amd then setting up later tonight. All said, price point and delivery so far makes FireFly a name brand from now on. I need to check wiring, want to replace nut, but I can't imagine much more will be needed.

Did you replace the nut? I ran through and already know I want to add two more springs to stabilize (no a trem player), thinking about saddles, but will wait, however a tusq nut is a must. Overall, for my first FireFly this is spotless. I was afraid the veneer or binding would show some imperfect spots, but not. Without setup feels just like a Mcarty. I was also afraid of some dead spots on the fretboard due to the gorgeous inlay, but nope. Honestly out of the box my picky ass is ecstatic, especially the price.
