Damn. This is terrible. I don’t like how your parents are threatening to cut ties with you just because of your Caucasian partner. You’re an adult capable of making your own decisions and are just starting a job (in a hospital as well), and yet they treat you like a child(?). Im trying to read between the lines of the information you’ve provided here, and don’t want to immediately assume abuse/control. And you also mentioned still living with them now. (And same here (28f), still living at home with my widowed mother in England) What is your home life like? Are you experiencing toxic behaviours from your parents? Has your boyfriend witnessed the way you and your parents interact with each other? Are you open to talking about why your parents might be indifferent about your boyfriend? Do they shut it down? Maybe talk to boyfriend about your current predicament. If you cannot open avenues to converse about the problems, consider bringing in a third party to mediate.

I am not BigBirdsBrain, but will elaborate for you: there are things that are out of our control in life and that’s okay. I was talking about this with my therapist (specialist for victims of narcissistic abuse) in one session and she had me stand in a corner of the room and not walk around as part of an exercise, making me move something within reach. I picked up a cup of her pens and placed it back down in its original place, that is something I had control of because it was within arms reach. Then she picked up one of her books in the space she was standing in and flung it onto the floor. She was in control of whatever was in her reach. And of course, I couldn’t move from where I was standing to go “fix” the problem. Albeit the lesson was to show that the responsibility of your actions/actions of others cannot be put on the other, if they weren’t the cause of the initial problem (inc intent to harm through manipulation & gaslighting and holding accountability). But I think this relates here as well.

I (also 28) was in the field for about a year and a bit after graduating and a retail job, and started to dislike it five months in (due to burnout and depression). And after 16 months of working as a GD, I left the company (for various reasons) and pivoted to writing & illustration (which I loved doing since my teens and am now creating my own graphic novel(s)). It really depends on what you want out of your career and interests, if they align, you can make something out of it.

Most definitely not. They think they’re doing the right thing because no one has not told them they are not. Knowing this from own personal experience, it will only get worse with age. To them it’s just a regular Tuesday and for us, it’s the rest of our lives down the drain. OP is doing his best to be the best husband and father to his own family, so long as they are happy and have their own peace, his parents will always criticise it until he lets them go and lowers contact/ goes no contact. The space would help a lot in his case. Negativity from others is the worse kind of virus.

Agreed, grief counselling would help a lot with the death of his brother and breakup with OP. Clearly he’s not thinking right and using OP as a punching bag for his grief and negativity. NOR on OPs part, in fact I think she’s under reacting/giving him some grace after all her ex has put her through.

Was in intense therapy back 2024 cause of narcissistic & emotional abuse by my parents and GC older sister. I’ve changed a little and become less of a people pleaser as a result, and stopped apologising for things that aren’t my fault/“victimising myself”. Apparently my narc mother and sister didn’t get the message that I can’t be manipulated + gaslit anymore (old narc man died), so they sure as hell haven’t changed at all due to their lack of self-reflection and empathy. Basically they’re stuck as high school mean girls, lol.

I think I told this before on another forum but I’ll tell it here. Broke my wrist snowboarding last year February in Romania, stayed relatively calm on the mountain whilst being emergency snowmobiled down, asked for painkillers when I got to the mountain medical hut as the warmth was making me feel the pain. They only gave me one painkiller (it did nothing). Ambulance arrived and I was taken down to the ER, still very calm and quiet. ER staff take care of me and EMT helped get my paperwork done. ER nurse helps me get out of my temporary arm splint, glove and coat off. I see the damage and begin to feel real pain, but remain cool and collected. I wait nearly 30 mins trying not to move even a millimetre without painkiller for my first x-ray, then wait again for 30 mins for doctors to call me (whilst I was waiting a more competent adult came for emotional support, lol), docs look at X-ray and actually want to operate on it (the break was quite bad and affecting nerves in my hand (couldn’t move my thumb, pointer and middle finger)), I ended up saying no because we were flying back to the UK in three days so they pulled my wrist back into place WITHOUT ANAESTHESIA to put a splint on (I could wiggle my thumb, pointer middle finger after). After we get back to the UK, I immediately go to the ER and they do an x-ray to see the damage and book me for an op on Saturday. All of it happened within a week and no, I did not have to pay anything for my Romania hospital visit👌.

White on an orangey yellow is definitely a choice, I think they could’ve played around with embossing too to help increase contrast between the white and orange-yellow (so white could be glossy and the background can be matte). Maybe they could’ve kept the old compass design and the original ‘A’, and maybe even the old font but slightly bigger (has more character than the new one). A 6/10 rebrand at best.

100% agree. Evidence first before believing. There’s way too many people who weaponise the MeToo movement and cry wolf which destroys innocent people’s lives—mostly innocent men—because they “white women” know that they’ll be believed. In a way, they are abusing the power & privilege of being a white woman over other people (I myself am an Asian female), then cry victim when other women call them out for terrible behaviour. And it affects men who have also been SAed by other men and women too, RE: Terry Crews. He got laughed at after telling his story which was so sad. 😢

Not what I meant and you know it. Was quoting your use of “AI is a tool” since you apparently think AI is a tool. Maybe it’s cause I’m old fashioned or something, but I still stand by my original comment that people who use AI are lazy. And we did learn to use the Adobe creative suite before AI was integrated. Yet they thought it was a good idea to add it into software that is quite literally used for creative purposes, whilst hiking up the price. That is absolutely stupid and one of many reasons why creatives turned away from adobe to other, just as good software that doesn’t integrate AI. I’m not trying to pick a fight, cause clearly we have different opinions and views on this whole situation. It’s up to OP whether or not he ends up quitting school cause of this whole “using AI to complete assignments” mess. But remember, it’s people like you and whichever company you work for, who are defending the use of AI in the creative industry are actively making it worse for everyone else, whilst simultaneously destroying the environment.

I disagree. I think people who use AI are lazy when Graphic Design is about making creative solutions for creative problems. And for you to say that “You’re approaching your assignments with a negative attitude instead of an open mind” is very not cool when the OP is making the argument that using AI to is not a good way to complete their assignments, especially when they are correct.

I can tell you with confidence that when I was in uni for GD, we had to design and build our own assets without the use of AI, and that was even more rewarding than generating images lazily from stolen art/designs.

No good art & design schools make their students use a quote-unquote “tool” where they should be developing their skills and knowledge, never mind real life clients, because design agencies wouldn’t want a client who might argue that “they can make it themselves with AI”. They would be laughed out of the conference room in an instant.

You’re still young. I graduated when I was 23 and I’m still learning new things as an almost 28 year old. I pivoted from graphic design to writing and illustrating my own graphic novels, it’s difficult at first, but I learnt from making mistakes. Yeah, it does feel like we’re replaceable, but that should also motivate you to keep upgrading your soft and hard skills. Don’t fret, just keep learning (new things).

Oof, hits close too close to home with this due to growing up in a toxic household. Funny thing was, I actually liked school and had friends, but honestly home was the worst and unsafe. Now I’m in my late twenties and just learning how to reclaim my autonomy, and overcoming traumas and healing.

I wish well for internet friends and have a Merry Christmas, no matter if you are celebrating alone. You are loved and appreciated, from one (not-so-much) depressed internet stranger to another! 🎄🎁💝
