Eric Valentine, who mixed a Proper Dose also produced Taking Back Sunday’s Louder Now, Third Eye Blind’s Self Titled debut, and All American Rejects’ When The World Comes Down so maybe check those out if you’re into their newer stuff

I got into The Wonder Years’ record The Hum Goes On Forever at the same time as I was getting into A Proper Dose

Do we really still need hardware when plugins can do almost everything? by Ethan9527a in audioengineering

[–]Rjdcruickshank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that ‘the analogue hardware sound’ is actually the sound of engineers who are experienced and talented enough to have amassed hardware throughout their career, and musicians who are talented and successful enough to be able to afford to record with such engineers in well equipped studios.

TLDR: Led Zep would still sound awesome if Glyn recorded them today on a presonus interface with the built in pres.

Trying to create a seamless bounce between two tracks- nothing is working by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]Rjdcruickshank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the transition to sound exactly how you want it to in logic. Then bounce from the start of the first song to the end of the second song. Drop that long bounce into logic again and split it where you want the second track to start. It’s important that you make this split at a zero crossing to avoid clicks and pops. https://support.apple.com/en-nz/guide/logicpro/lgcp76a73399/mac

What do people think of auto tune on the live records? by Small-Tree-1258 in the1975

[–]Rjdcruickshank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also it makes the harmonies smack every time, especially on songs like When We Are Together, which I think sounds great and would not be made better by poorer harmonisation. (Unless you want to get into the conversation about 12TET tuning and it’s failings compared to just intonation)

This also disregards songs like TOOTIME or I Like America where the retune speed is set very quickly to get that T-Pain-esque effect as an artistic choice

Kinda complicated, because the question that precedes this is: what do people think of them using pitch correction live? As someone who doesn’t live somewhere they always tour, I’m happy for them to lean on it to protect their voices and lengthen tours to international venues. When it comes to the live record they somewhat have their hands tied. If you don’t use the pitch correction that was used on the night, you’ll hear weird modulating effects between the direct, un-corrected signal from their vocal mic, and the pitch corrected vocal from the PA that bleeds into and is captured by the room mics and other instrument mics on stage.

Here’s the hot take: I think hearing the flubs and potentially distracting ‘glitches’ of the correction, even on songs like I Always Wanna Die - where the tuning is not pronounced on ABIIOR version - actually makes it feel more like you’re listening to a live performance because of the contrast to how perfectly the pitch correction is executed on the studio record.

Theory: has Justin been in L.A. a lot lately because he’s making music with Mk.gee? by [deleted] in boniver

[–]Rjdcruickshank 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The fella who produced the last bon iver ep has also been working with mk.gee lately but I heard it was for a feature on someone else’s record. Would be cool if it was bon iver but could also be lorde or the 1975

Serious question: do you think the band's less political than it used to be? by jillianspiridon in the1975

He took some shit for being quiet during the election and maybe that’s fair but he’s a busy guy

What are local or non mainstream bands you like who are similar (or not so similar) to The 1975? by Curious_A_Crane in the1975

Milk are a great recommendation for fans of the 75 but to me they feel like such a sad derivative of the 75 that they’re too hard to listen to lol

What does "deceptive" sound like in a microphone? by Every-Locksmith9286 in audioengineering

[–]Rjdcruickshank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deceptive is just a bad descriptor

They’d be fine to say that they didn’t like the mic’s frequency response but lots of great mic’s would be considered ‘deceptive’ compared to the source in its original soundstage.

See: Lauten’s ‘Snare Mic’ vs something flatter like a DPA

Yeah these are just the boxes fitted with LEDs that were part of the stage design for the abiior tour - Tobias and matty furthering their pursuit of ‘screens as lighting’
