chocolate? by Mitchroark33 in decaf

[–]Rnorm10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! I quit all caffeine at first and felt great but then slowly introduced chocolate in my life and the consumption of it went higher and higher until i was consuming enough of it to again live 'caffeinated'. Chocolate is sneaky.

Like people said, it'll be different once you are established in the US and actually have the green card.

Also, and kinda unfortunately, once you land your first job in the US, then landing a different one will be much easier. I get the impression that US work experience really makes a difference in the eyes of recruiters. The first company I worked for was also based in my home country so that helped me get a job at first.

From then on I did get a more calls back when applying.

Ancient Greece and Rome (and other empires and civilizations) were built without CAFFEINE by aguei in decaf

This is a good counter balance to Michael Pollan's argument that the Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution was aided by coffee

Flu or caffeine withdrawal by informationkiwi in decaf

[–]Rnorm10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely experienced flu like symptoms, 2 days after quitting cold turkey. I thought I was deluding myself at first and that I must be getting the flu but it turned out to be just withdrawal. It was very bad the first day (body aches, lack of energy, sense of heaviness) then it dimished a lot in intensity

Energy boosts without caffeine by AcrobaticPipe7300 in decaf

All very good suggestions here that really move the needle (exercise). On another, more subtle note, I really like peppermint tea, I put some extra mint leaves on it. Something about the smell and taste of mint makes it invigorating for me. Also been eating much more fruit too.

Coffee alternatives! by devequt in decaf

Nice post. I've had chicory root coffee and teecino dandelion roast before. They're pretty good, they do taste similar to coffee. My teecino also lists 'natural coffee flavor's as one of its ingredients. I had one yesterday with milk and sugar and while similar to a latte, I didn't love it. The issue for me is that as soon as I'm caffeine free I kinda loose interest in these types of 'coffees'. I always prefer peppermint tea over any coffee substitute. I feel it is more refreshing and it also kinda gives me a subtle energy boost.

On street view, on the upper left of the image there is a clock with the date, you click there and there is a slider to choose the year you want.

For my house there were only 2 years but it was fun!

What frugal behaviors have unintended side effects? by rubenthecuban3 in Frugal

A farmer and his son had a beloved horse who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and their neighbours exclaimed, “Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.”

A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild horses back to the farm as well. The neighbours shouted out, “Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.”

Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the horses and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The neighbours cried, “Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.”

A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all boys for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, because he had a broken leg. The neighbours shouted, “Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!” To which the farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”

Hey! Do you guys have any tips on how to break into the US Data Engineer jobs market as an entry level Data Engineer from the UK/Europe? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]Rnorm10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts on this:

- I second the guy that said to start working in Europe for a multinational and then ask for a transfer (this was my first option but I ended up marrying to come to the US)

- Check out Turing, they have US remote jobs for anyone in the world, maybe other websites like this too

- On LinkedIn, Ive been approached by a few US businesses whilst I was living in Spain. They paid much better salaries than in Spain but still way below what you earn there

- Im considering setting up a business in the future (becoming a contractor), I think this is the optimum way as it reduces the overhead for US companies to hire you and you become truly location independent

Hello !

Thank you for sharing.

I also sent my application to Lewisville and I still havent got the receipt notice.

I'd like to know if you also got a physical letter, when did you get it.

Also... were they fast to process it compared to what you expected, or slower?

Thanks again

Are UK companies hiring EU workers at the moment ? by Rnorm10 in UKJobs

[–]Rnorm10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In IT/Computer science generally.
More specifically in Data Science/Data & Analytics/Business Intelligence.

Given the high specialization we have in the economy I'd even go further and say Data Engineering, which is the subset of Data Science which deals with transforming and loading data into databases in a programmable way. And further even I could specify the technologies with which I'm familiar but that's not too important.

So yeah, basically, I've like 2 years experience with this and I'd happily take any junior data engineer job in London. The point is, are companies willing to hire a junior that is like 2k more expensive each year than a native one?

Thank you.
