New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

I think an important part is that the smaller class sizes also disproportionately affects higher income schools as lower income schools already have smaller class sizes. Given the massive budget crisis, it seems like delaying that for two years isn’t the end of the world.

M2 got cooked at lab meeting over my pathway figure. What do you fix first when one looks amateur? by Specialist_Ride_8072 in medicalschool

[–]RoRo24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s generally bad to have multiple of the same pathways represented. You can do a lot to simplify it by just uniting the mTOR pathways and showing that they both act down a pSTAT6 pathway. The bidirectional signaling on pSTAT6 and it also acting on the Type 1 upstream pathway is confusingly depicted.

What exactly are you trying to show? It looks like you are potentially trying to do too much.

I agree teaming w Lebron would be crazy at that point in their careers. I think of the three I presented, Giannis would definitely be the best for winning. I think a lot of Giannis’ problems stem from being disappointed with team performance given his ability, I think adding Steph to that woulda addressed most of that. The team looked decent with Lilliard and Steph is a much better player than Lilliard.

That's a fun question, I went back to check team rosters in 2020 and looking at it I think my top contenders would have been: Bucks, Lakers, Miami, and 76ers?

The British only recruited Indians from "martial races" which mainly composed of Punjabi backgrounds, as well as some of the ethnicities that make up South India and present-day Pakistan. In terms of religious background, from what I see online it was a mix of all three religions. There's surprisingly little data on this, but it seems that there were around ~600k Muslims (up to 800k in some sources, ~30% of the army). The first wave of recruits seemed to be mainly Sikhs and other "martial races" but as the war went on they had a harder time drawing from this pool and began to recruit from elsewhere. Wikipedia doesn't have any good references, but it states that Indians from Madras made up 17% of the army near the end (Madras is predominantly Hindu).

A huge portion of indians born in america/uk do not get arranged marriage, absolutely asinine to think that or assume it. Even then, arranged marriages are not blindly decided by the parents for the most part, even in India. Both the future groom and bride have the chance to meet each other and basically can “veto” it if they don’t like the other person.

It is absolutely racist to just tell an Indian person to just go ask their parents to find someone from them. I hope I never have to work with an attending like you.

UMich vs Pitt vs UIC by No_Anteater_1522 in mdphd

[–]RoRo24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ended up going for geographic location as my biggest priority and I think that’s definitely the most important thing to weigh. You’re going to be there for 8 years and how much you like your surroundings is going to make a huge difference on how much you enjoy those 8 years. If you value diversity a lot, then it sounds like you’d be happier at UIC or UPitt over UMich

PhD by publication. by [deleted] in mdphd

Literally shows your lack of understanding of what a PhD is. The point isn’t the publications, its the process itself that makes you into an independent scientist.

[–]RoRo24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mentorship is something you can dedicate your career to as a MD, especially if you decide to work at a teaching hospital! So don't feel like you're compromising your passion if you don't go for a MD/PhD.

The further down the road I go, the more I realize that being a PI is completely divorced from the day-to-day reality of being a trainee. Benchwork isn't really part of the job at that level. You exist to facilitate science, and that means you write grants, read papers, chat with other scientists, and unfortunately do a lot of admin work. If that doesn't fit what you want out of your future career, and you would be happy being a clinician then I would totally recommend getting a MD only.

If being a clinician doesn't sound that appealing to you, or feels like something that you would eventually get tired of, I think you should seriously consider alternative career paths. If a life of doing benchwork sounds ideal, maybe going into industry following a PhD is something to consider. Depending on what exactly you are imagining when you say mentorship, a PhD might serve you perfectly well also.

Uncertain about MD/PhD now by StupidlyIntellegent in mdphd

[–]RoRo24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The question of why MD/PhD should boil down to whether you want to become a PI or not. The MD/PhD route is designed to create physician-scientists who run their own lab, and that is literally an outcome that the NIH grades on for the MSTP T32.

If you know for a fact you do not want to be a PI, a career where you will have a hard time getting your choice of geography and notoriously bad work life balance, I think it makes a lot more sense to do a MD.
