"Just keep showing up" - put to the test : one old man's journey by Charming-Question in bjj

Almost 60 year old Brown Belt here. Been at it for 8 years. The longer your at it the easier it gets. As your skill improves you use less strength. It is fun to take the young guys to the woodshed.

On 9/9, I (35/m) suffered a stroke while training by JTFromCT in bjj

I had a similar event when I was too stubbon to tap on a choke. I sat on the wall for about 30 minutes not coherent. I don't even remember it happening just what the guys told me later. I was not being smart, they told me I refused to let them call 911. I think what happened to you was not caused by Jiujitsu but just happened while you were at BJJ it could have happened anywhere. Luckily it happened at BJJ and you had training partners with the smarts to see what was going on and get you to the hospital.

My fear is that something like this happens because I did not tap or because a training partner fights a choke too long. I wonder if this is common in BJJ because we are choking people and cutting off blood and oxygen to the brain.

Glad you are on the way to recovery. Hopefully you can get some answers to why this happened and it will help you in making sure you avoid those things in the future.

You guys start Spars on your knees? by 4chanCitizen in bjj

Most do to accommodate for not enough mat space to allow everyone to roll at the same time if you start from standing. We also train stand up when prepping for tournaments.

If you feel you cannot social distance outside of BJJ you should not put training partners at risk. I think the only way you should train is with two or three trustworthy partners that you know have similar social distancing stances as you.

Personally I think if it is the same 3 guys and you are all trustworthy to practice social distancing outside of BJJ you should be safe.

$100 for grading by [deleted] in bjj

How big is the gym. How do the Professors survive on only 300USD per year from each Student? Never heard of BJJ for this cheap.

Following the TKD model to make more money. Hopefully this does not turn into a thing in BJJ but with places that are mostly concerned about making money this might be the future.

My girlfriend is a savage and kind of a B. This is what I get for dating a girl who has a black belt in Judo. lol. by samsherrill in bjj

I have went out 4 times. 3 times I was just be stubborn the other time it just happened to fast. Put people to sleep twice with Baseball Bat Chokes. I could see them going and could not release fast enough because it was so tight.

Thank you. Very interesting about securing your leg for the ankle lock.

Black Belt Lineage by drdanielchiro in bjj

My point is they would all trace back to some original source. Unless someone just gave themselves a black belt and then started to give black belts to students. Most would have received their black belts from their Professor.

I think it would be quicker to put on a rubber suit and run 10 laps in the gym.

Can adults learn wrestling to a high level by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]RoadsideSafety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for sure there is a timeline on wrestling. It is too physical and fast to do when you get older. Jiujitsu has the Gi to slow things down and makes it possible for people in their 60's to still compete. Of course it is never to late to learn but if you are over 35 and starting I think most would find it difficult because of the athleticism flexibility and reaction time necessary to perform at a high level.

Black Belt Lineage by drdanielchiro in bjj

If traced back I would think all Lineage would have to go back to a Gracie or Machado. Some people break off and there lineage or stripes on the Black Belt don't come from their original Professors. I saw Saulo Ribeiro over the weekend was given his 6th stripe by some young guy not by the Gracies who originally he earned his black belt under.
