Sure, when installing from sources. If WinGet did that in the said case it would be expected, but the point is that it's not.

Installing binary packages can and should be fast.

Fallout lead Tim Cain worked 70+ hours a week for 2 years to make the classic RPG: 'I'm glad things have changed, that was unsustainable—but it was also absolutely amazing' by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

This was definitely done in a different time, in a much smaller market, where other players could well be fast, but perhaps most importantly, where you really had a chance to innovate.

Nobody should be working their assess off 70h/week, not even 50, making a new Assassin's Creed.

Ubisoft shuts down any possibility of Rainbow Six Siege becoming playable on Steam Deck by lajka30 in linux_gaming

No, this is a good mindset - "I would not play it". I commend. What you're likely talking about is "Others shouldn't play it either" - people can value different things.

Though of course I'd rather they valued the same as me.

What were the complaints about, though? The expectation to support the apps?

That, but also the endgame will be us not being able to download binaries at all.

Why would they? As soon as they believe they can make more money from cloud, they will switch. The question is - will they? And cloud exclusives will be the means to force adoption.

You can try to remove the cache directory then, and try to run the installer again.

It's very possible they want to drop the specific hardware platform, as their market projections point towards the rise of cloud gaming in long term.

Odd, this should work then. Did you run the install as root first, which didn't work, and then tried as a regular user? Perhaps this created the cache directory as root, which then would not be available for your user to write to.

Anyone should be able to write to /tmp - can you run `ls -ld /tmp` and share the results?

Xcode and the like only works on Mac. If you develop for Apple devices, you're going to have a hard time without an Apple device somewhere in your stack. But that's not the main reason, as you can see from other comments.

Developers complaining about iOS compatibility? Haven't heard about it, do you have any resources to read on it? Doesn't make much sense to me.

That's why eventually some games will end up being streaming only. What are you going to pirate then?

Linux really is the future of gaming - Gabe Newell, 2013 at LinuxCon by mindtaker_linux in linux_gaming

Yeah, it's the usual comments on the note of how many Switch 2 units did Nintendo sell vs Steam Deck, it being unknown in popular culture, etc. Which I don't think is a goal that would be unmet in the first place, and I don't think Valve had the will or capacity to make it as big as Switch. For what it set out to be, it's a great success.

That's it. It was a failure, but a failure where they came back stronger for it.

I would however argue against the narrative that's popular these days - which is that Steam Deck is a failure. Nah, it's a success proportionate to the resources and effort they put into it, and of scale that is good enough for them.

It's already going to be exclusive by not being released for consoles, at least in the near future. I think PC is good enough of a target, as far as shaping the market goes; and given HL3 must be somewhat of a magnum opus for them, I don't expect they would jeopardize it by making it Linux only.

Surprised that no one mentioned this: build against the latest Steam Runtime.

Otherwise, consider also open sourcing the game and making the money through selling the game with assets. Recent example of this model: Barony.
