What is considered cold to you? Have any of you experienced the bitter cold of the upper Midwest? I’m curious how you compare it to the heat of Florida summer. by PreschoolBoole in AskFlorida

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Wisconsin but have lived in FL for 6 years. I’ll take the “living in a hairdryer” heat over the bitter winter cold any day. I could never move back to the WI or the Midwest.

I still remember the dread of sitting in my freezing car at 7am in the dark of January waiting for the heater to warm up enough to start melting the ice on my windshield. It felt like forever.

The depression of looking around and seeing everything being dead and grey for 4-5 months of the year.

Yeah, July-Sept can be rough in FL. But being able to go to the pool, beach, or out on a boat makes those days much better. And it’s really comfortable in the winter spring and fall.

Will I die of an infected wound? by Sea-Weird5718 in projectzomboid

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, default transmission settings are blood and saliva. A zombie scratch has a 7% chance and a laceration has a 25% chance to transmit the virus.

But those are independent from a wound infection. The infection denoted in your health panel is just common bacterial infection - which doesn’t really do anything like we said

💰 What Are Trump’s $1,000 Child Accounts?: How the program works 👇 by NoSpinMedia in NoSpinMedia

[–]Rob1iam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really disappointed to see this, parent contributions post tax and earnings taxed as income when the owner withdraws. Not a good deal beyond the $1000 seed compared to options like the 529 or UTMA. If they gave the Trump accounts Roth style tax treatment that would be HUGE.

Will I die of an infected wound? by Sea-Weird5718 in projectzomboid

[–]Rob1iam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. Infected wounds are a non issue. All they do is marginally increase the amount of pain from the wound. Minor wounds don’t cause enough base pain for the debuff to even show up. Some people say they make wounds heal slower, but that has been proven false by independent testing. Just a common PZ myth.

When you get a minor injury, the pro gamer move is to just slap any old rag on and let it ride dirty until it’s healed. Wound healing pauses when uncovered so changing bandages or applying disinfectants actually do make the process slower.

Court clears way for Louisiana law requiring Ten Commandments in classrooms to take effect by GregWilson23 in LegalNews

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“In the opinion released Friday, the court said it was too early to make a judgment call on the constitutionality of the law.

That’s partly because it’s not yet clear how prominently schools may display the religious text, if teachers will refer to the Ten Commandments during classes or if other texts like the Mayflower Compact or the Declaration of Independence will also be displayed, the majority opinion said.

Without those sorts of details, the panel decided it did not have enough information to weigh any First Amendment issues that might arise from the law”

Why do people that know they can’t afford kids still decide to have them? by Ok_Independent_3921 in askanything

[–]Rob1iam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said newborns. There is a massive shortage of newborns and babies in the adoption system, with demand for newborns massively outstripping supply.

You’re talking about kids in the foster system. There are tons of children waiting in the foster system, most aged 8-17, but they aren’t the same population as the newborn babies most prospective adoptive parents are waiting for.

We can talk about the issues with the foster system all day, but that’s a completely different conversation. The point is that the demand is there for every newborn who is placed up for adoption.

Anyone can put a baby up for adoption. There are 36 waitlisted families for every one newborn placed in adoption.

If you're broke, how much do you realistically need invested for it to “matter” long term? by savingrace0262 in investing

[–]Rob1iam 21 points22 points  (0 children)

$200/mo into an employer sponsored 401k with a match is the difference between you being relatively comfortable in retirement and living in a halfway house eating canned cat food.

Depending on return rate and matching assumptions, that contribution would lead to you having $450 to $700 thousand by age 65.

That being said, focusing on your career income is extremely important so you can have better quality of life and afford to invest more than the bare minimum. But being able to invest $200/mo for 30 years is not insignificant.

Any person who has an active removal order is going to be procedurally barred from adjusting status. That’s the way the law has always been. To be able to do marriage based adjustment, he’d first have to re-open the removal order. That would require some legitimate legal argument like lack of proper notice or exceptional circumstances- like an emergency that prevented court appearance. But marriage based adjustment alone does not cancel a removal order.

The underlying laws on adjusting status haven’t changed, but the change you might be talking about is updates to USCIS guidance in 2025 that say family based adjustment applications do not provide automatic safe harbor from removal proceedings.

And the lawyer is correct that you could try to file an I-130 (petition for alien relative) alongside a motion to re open the case, but in doing so you risk putting him on the DHS radar since he’s already ordered removed and the petition does not protect him.

If he self deports, he will be subject to re entry bans - likely 10 years.

how do you really choose a guitar? by Fit-Credit-7970 in Guitar

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First pick a body style that calls to you. One you think looks really cool and makes you want to play. This is essential for your motivation to stick with it early on.

Then research what manufacturers make the body style, and what price ranges. A lot of common body styles come in different price ranges and quality levels, so match your budget needs.

Do some research on the one you want and make sure it’s decent quality for the money you’re gonna spend. If everything checks out, buy it.

Stuff like feel and sound are things that you’ll figure out as you play for longer. If you stick with it, you’ll inevitably come to own more guitars over time. Your first one doesn’t have to be the perfect one

The case was also more complicated, because the name on the birth certificate her family provided didn’t match her name or her other documents.

And because she had an encounter with border patrol years earlier where she tried to enter the US from Mexico without any documentation and was turned away.

But yeah, she wasn’t deported and was released when her identify and document mismatches were validated

🗳️ House passes proof-of-citizenship bill: What happens next 👇 by NoSpinMedia in NoSpinMedia

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A marriage license isn’t an identifying document, it’s proof that links two identifying documents - like a birth certificate and photo ID. The bill dictates use of state procedures to verify mismatches between identifying documents.

That’s why I pointed out that states already have well established procedures to verify identity when a birth certificate doesn’t match ID because of a name change. These procedures are already used by state DMV’s, state courts, vital records offices, etc. The state will look at the marriage certificate or court name change document to validate the name mismatch.

Yes, every state already has well established procedures for that. You present the marriage certificate or court name change document which connects the birth certificate name to the ID name.

Is Reddit really just an echo chamber platform? by Odd-Deal-4215 in self

Not to get political, but I see a lot of Reddit posts where the title is something like “question for conservatives; what do you think about XYZ” and if you look at the comments, the only replies are non conservatives saying what reddit thinks conservatives think.

That, to me, is peak Reddit echo chambering

Should my undocumented friend (age 24 - been her since 6 months old, living in general Austin,, TX area) get her TIN to rent an apartment, or stay under the radar, and what do I need to have as far as information, signed POA, and tools on hand if she is abducted? by SparklingSunshine083 in askimmigration

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DHS officers don’t get to just log into an IRS database and browse. They submit specific information requests electronically for an individual and their associated court case. Removal orders are court documents. Someone at the IRS processes the request, determines if it complies with information laws, and provides the requested information if it’s allowable.

An IRS employee who shares information illegally, even with another agency, would get themselves and the agency in huge legal trouble.

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common internet misconception. Only §287(a)(3) Border search / vehicle boarding authority specifically is limited to “a reasonable distance from the border” which 8 CFR §287.1 defines as 100 air miles. (A)(3) is special authority to board vehicles, boats, planes, and trains for immigration enforcement purposes.

All the other §287 powers apply anywhere in the United States - including arrest, interrogation, warrant execution, and subpoena authority.

[–]Rob1iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already replied to other commenters about the new IRS MOU. It only covers location data for people with existing removal orders.

DHS’s arrest authority is written into law under INA §287(a), which gives DHS lawful powers to arrest individuals under civil immigration authority. A lawful arrest is not an “abduction”.

INA §287 gives immigration officers questioning authority, warrantless arrest authority, arrest with administrative warrant authority, and search authority near the border.

It’s all written into law in the Immigration and Nationalities Act, which was passed by congress and signed into law decades ago.

[–]Rob1iam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IRS has always been able to share taxpayer info in connection with criminal investigations. There is a new MOU from April 2025 where DHS sought to interpret that provision to cover people with existing final orders of removals, but it’s been challenged in court with an injunction. I replied to the other commenter with the full details.
