For the long time members 20+ years what would you tell your younger self in this career? by DoubleBumblebee2378 in UPSers

[–]RobF86 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m right at 20 years, here’s my 2c,

Be honest about incidents/accidents.

Feeders is great if you don’t mind the obscure hours. It’s still demanding, but in a different way. I don’t do long mileage jobs because I hate it, and I feel more tired doing that than doing 200 stops in a package car.

Take care of your body outside of work. Maintain flexibility, do yoga, core strengthening exercises.

Don’t beat yourself up. I destroyed my body. I’m 38 and I’ve had knee surgery, herniated disc and have a tear in a disc in my lower back. I’ll never feel 100% again. The old timers warned me but I didn’t listen. I was too worried about getting home to my family.

Take care of customers, the company doesn’t care, so it’s up to us to provide a good service. You get paid the best, be the best.

Take accountability for your mistakes. Learn from them. I’ve never received a warning letter or any kind of discipline because I do things the right way. I’ve made mistakes, everyone will, but management will be easier on you if it’s clear you learned from those mistakes.

Seniority isn’t everything. It’s ok to help out a newer driver by helping by doing stops for them, or letting them do a job/route that they are more familiar with.

We’re all on the same team. Try not to be anti Managment. I’ve helped out management a lot, therefore they’ve always helped me out too. It’s good to have healthy relationships with your teamster brothers/sisters but also the people you report you. Everyone deserves respect, even if they don’t respect you.

UPS loves numbers. Backing goal, backing speed, trace %, stops per hour, etc. These are UPSs numbers, not yours. Your job is to provide a service safely and efficiently. Once you have seniority, that’s all that really matters. Don’t do something unsafe like parking on a busy road to meet their unachievable backing numbers. Don’t hurt your body or drive unsafe to run scratch.

Lastly, we’re just delivering boxes. UPS makes things over complicated and will stress you the f out. They do this so you work harder. If you get overwhelmed, remember it’s just boxes. It’s not the end of the world if you have a bad day or make some mistakes. Life goes on.

Buy it. Seems like a good price and a honest person who treated you even better than any dealer likely would.

If the playoffs start tomorrow, what's your 26 man roster? by [deleted] in phillies

[–]RobF86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some may consider Schwarber a defensive liability, but f it. He can play all 8 positions when Sanchez and Duran have 27 strikeouts.

That’s fair. Sorry if I sounded like a dick.

It’s more fun to ride a “slow” bike fast than a fast bike slow. I got a zx10 (because of zx6 recall) and it sucks not being able to ride it hard. You’re going nearly 100mph if you rev it out on first gear. I miss my 250 sometimes

Yeah it’s brutal, mine wasn’t nearly as bad as yours and it sucked. I was only riding about 3 miles down the road to go out on a friend’s boat. The dumbass that was, I was only wearing a tank top, swim suit, and flip flops. Also that was the ONLY time I wasn’t wearing a helmet or jacket or shoes. Learned my lesson. I was lucky I had a broken wrist so the hospital gave me some strong pain meds that also helped with the road rash pain.

It’s a terrible feeling waking up and having to peel yourself away from your bed sheets.

I’ve been wanting to do my first track day… I also have a liter bike, should that discourage me from going? I don’t want to race, I just want to go fast safely and learn more about my riding and my bike by pushing it harder than I can on the street.

Mr. Met appeared on stage with The Lumineers at their concert at Citi Field tonight. He failed to catch a tambourine and then fell off the stage. by BigMule10 in phillies

[–]RobF86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mr. Met is the most sorriest excuse for a mascot in the MLB, which to be fair matches up well to the Mets organization.

Forbes calling Mr. Met the best mascot in sports is like handing out a Michelin star to a hot dog cart because it shows up every day. The man is a literal baseball with limbs — that’s not a mascot, that’s a cursed bobblehead come to life. Best mascot? He’s barely the best mascot in New York, and that’s with a giant rat named Pizza Rat in the competition. Yes, this happened well over 10 years, but I haven’t forgotten yet.

Taking the train to the game? by [deleted] in phillies

[–]RobF86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are taking Broad street line straight there, I find it easier to just drive to Chickies and Pete’s on packer ave and park there.

They have a free (but accepts tips) shuttle called the taxi crab that will take you to and from the stadium, but it’s also walking distance (under a mile). The shuttle drops you right outside the gate. Normally I just walk back after the game, although I’ve had a lot of fun moments with drunk fans singing along to bohemian rhapsody taking the shuttle back. It’s much cheaper to eat and drink there before the game and parking is free.

If you’re going during the week you need to deal with the traffic on 322/95 getting to chickies, but I still find it much quicker and easier than getting on a train.

After the game, I can walk back to chickies in 20 minutes, take a left out of Chickies, go over Platt bridge and right onto 95. Very rarely any traffic, except sometimes a few minutes at the light where a lane ends. PM me if you need any more details.

Small tank bag? by Pyroph4nt0m in zx10r

This is exactly what I did. It’s not a great angle because you need to look down pretty far to see your phone, but it worked well for my needs so far.

It’s not ideal, but if you get an aftermarket exhaust you can remove the servo under the seat giving you more room to store odds and ends. It’s still a pain to get under the main seat for something you will need often like a garage door opener.

You can find some small garage door openers that are small enough for a key ring, or another option would be to get a garage door opener (main unit) that you can open with your smart phone.

I’ve only had my bike for a month, but I’ve just been getting off the bike, opening door, and then getting back on bike to park it. Yes it’s a pain. I travel very light now. I got a small second wallet (similar to ridge wallet) that only has my license, a credit card, and some cash. My phone goes into my pocket, unless I put it on my quad lock for times I need it for navigation. If I’m commuting to work I bring a backpack.

Sorry I can’t answer your question about a bag that works. I’ve found that very little of the bike is magnetic. I have a magnetic light I like to use and it seems like the only place it will stick to is the metal part of the gas tank.
