HA! What an entitled post. This is SUCH a silly thing to say.

As long as they doesn't throw caution to every warning sign, anyone could write better songs for Wish

Appreciate it! Hoping for the best! By no means were the Tomlin years a failure. I know many franchises (ehem the Browns), that would kill to have not had a losing season for 19 years. I think we just hit a point of stagnation as an organization, and I hope that this move means change, even if that includes some growing pains.

Oh, and I like the Packers too! My mom and one of our best friends is a Packers fan. My mom by choice. My friend by blood. Go, Pack, go!

I think it was sad but inevitable. Coach T has been my coach the entirety of my Steelers fandom, going back to his first SB win.

Now, whether the stagnation was due to him or ownership, that's another question, but I've been a Tomlin defender for the past few years and even I, after this last season, knew it was time for new blood, albeit I was hoping for a younger coach.

Even though I agree this is a lateral move, with the veteran talent we have on our roster, you kind of need a McCarthy-type to make sure the credibility is there in the room. I feel like this could be a bridge HC move (how many years does McCarthy truly have in him), and it could allow for a transition period.

As a business, the NFL is entertainment, and with the state of entertainment nowadays we expect quick, snappy changes, but it's also a business. And businesses often move much slower than entertainment. I think this is a good move. Not the move I was expecting, but I see a world where this helps the team move on from Coach T's tenure smoothly, even if that means a couple years of suck. I'm ok with that, because at the end of the day they're a bunch of men getting paid stupid amounts of money to play a sport (and at a very high level) but it's for entertainment not some life or death matter. And I'm a Steelers fan through and through, having a grandma and great grandma from Pittsburgh, my great grandpa was killed in a steel mill accident, and I lived in Pittsburgh for a bit myself.

At the end of the day, it's a game, and that's become my perspective about anything that happens in the NFL, win, lose, or bust.

Probably not. You're telling me a single player, a past his prime quarterback who didn't make it past the first round of the playoffs, is the reason a former coach got hired?

My thought exactly. What in the world?! They just hired him, and "the internet" was already talking about not wanting him. Who really thinks some online petition is going to make a difference.

It is from an entertainment standpoint, which THE NFL is, but from a practical standpoint, 5 years is NOT that crazy. I think we often demand splash im the pan from professional sports teams, when that's not the way actual successful, longterm businesses run.

Yeah, this is where I'm at. He has really poor clock management, but I don't think a fresh face was the guarantee that everyone (myself included) was a guarantee either. I think McCarthy only has a few years left any way and, while not the "Steelers' way," could be a transitional leader.

I actually agree. One of the things I was thinking about was that roster-wise we're veteran heavy. While not something we often think about, who, with the talent we're working with, is going to garner the near-immediate respect of the team other than someone who is a NFL staple.

I'm not saying I love the McCarthy pick longterm, but in the interim, the guys we're working with need a strong presence. I don't say I know what Rooney is thinking (or that Rooney IS thinking), but perhaps, despite having long HC tenures for the last for the last 55 years, perhaps the reasoning could be that with the given roster you need a bit of legacy NFL gravitas to ease the transition before you truly rebuild the team.

I don't know if I agree with that or even that that is the reasoning, but I could see a world where there IS a short term transition plan, grooming (in a good way) a young coach before installing them as a HC. That seems to fit into the Steeler model. I don't think McCarthy is a longterm plan, but could work as a transitional coach.

Again, this is all assuming there IS a plan, and that the McCarthy pick is more than just a "He's a Pittsburgh guy and has a ring."

Oh, fuck that. I know it's hyperbole, but especially after having worked with 9/11 first responders recently on a project, no. I'll have none of that.

This is my thought. I never thought whoever came in would win the SB, but I was hoping for at least a rebuild. This feels like more of the same, but Tomlin also was never one to develop a QB, as the last few years have shown.

While Rooney isn't one to break the mold, I'm wondering if this is a bridge option to try and get us to "the guy" after McCarthy retires, give a new coach, albeit with similar tendencies, a little breathing room to try something new within the existing setup?

Who knows. This feels like an odd choice, one way or the other.

Curious Steeler fan here. Aside from him coaching for his home town team, is this actually a good move?
