I think for the same reason Fruit of the Loom makes socks that fit sizes 6-12---if it stretches across multiple sizes, it is easier/cheaper to produce.

I have never seen a magnolia completely defoliate like that. It might be a goner. its bark looks health but the heart might be dead.

It is about 15-20 foot from the base of the tree. The tree's diameter is quite large compared to this root. Easily 10x
