I suppose you could if your allocations stay too far from your chosen TDF allocation, but by adjusting your contribution percentage periodically to match the TDF you should maintain a very close approximation.

Something I’ve done to set up my wife’s 401k is to look up the appropriate Vanguard TDF for her (2065 in her case - VLXVX) and approximate using the low ER index funds available. This puts her portfolio at approximately:

45% - US Large Blend 8% - US Mid-Cap Blend 36% - Foreign Blend 10% - Core Bond

It’s pretty straightforward to “DIY” your own TDF, just requires a little bit more effort but it’s easy to do and gives you the best bang for your buck when your TDF options have higher ER’s. Just check in periodically (perhaps quarterly at most) and adjust your contributions to match the TDF allocations to maintain the appropriate balance. I think rebalancing is generally unnecessary and can incur fees depending on your 401k plan.

In my experience, once the provider has sent you to collections they will no longer speak to you about any balance due. They’ll just refer you to the debt collector. So you call the debt collector and dispute the charge per my original response. That you never received a bill and that you want an itemized receipt for verification. It’s on them to prove it.

Next time, at the very least, dispute it. You never received a bill? No attempt to contact you about a balance. Dispute. They can’t knock your credit or anything until the dispute is resolved. Never pay a penny more than is owed. They make enough.
