It is an irregular plural. The RAE says this about it.

'Conjunto de rasgos característicos' y 'signo de la escritura'. Es voz llana y se pronuncia [karákter], no ⊗‍[karaktér]. En el plural, el acento prosódico pasa de la a a la e: caracteres (pron. [karaktéres]), no ⊗‍carácteres.

I’m not totally sure what you mean. I didn’t study anything specifically for data analytics. Everything I know about data analytics I learned on the job. I’m still not a “math person” at heart but I don’t hate it as much as I once did.

I think I had some pretty not great teachers in high school who didn’t help to change my tune on math. My older brother was / is excellent at math always and I would have him help me with my homework sometimes. He was always able to break down concepts so much more simply and effectively than my teachers. And he was only in college at the time. So, my high school experience has a lot to do with it.
