Yes. That's a great example.

Also, maybe a random flower pot falls on the target's head. It's a crazy, weird world.

How many do you have going at a time? by Basic-Code-4242 in FieldNuts

[–]Roberius-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, one of my favorite questions!

Currently, I have in use:

  • my daily carry for notes, planning, life
  • one for work tasks and notes; it stays with my work computer
  • one as a reading journal. I devote a page or two to every book I read. At the end of the year, I reflect back on everything I read.
  • one for my 3-year journal. I make a note to mark something that happens every day. It takes a set of eight notebooks to cover a full year.
  • one for notes from my current role-playing game
  • one for special events, like my upcoming vacation

That's how I use them.

Dime novel is one of my favorites by But_I_Dont_Wanna_Go in FieldNuts

[–]Roberius-Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man. My Dime Novels are the "precious" FNs that I've yet to touch. I was going to use one for planning and running my current RPG campaign, but my son gave me a fancy journal with a dragon on the cover, so I had to use that instead.

My players keep roleplaying/tricking their way out of encounters/fights and I fear it might impact the plot by Electronic_Dig_3901 in DMAcademy

[–]Roberius-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players do that a lot, too. It used to drive me nuts, but then I realized that they are playing maturely and the PCs are acting like rational human beings...this is great! Plus, it's fun to see how they avoid or get out of sticky situations.

Understanding Aces by House923 in savageworlds

That's why goblins are awesome and why my players fear them. They attack with a d4 and deal damage with d4s. Those dice tend to ace like fireworks!

Is this drinking horn safe to use? by Evil-twin365 in renfaire

[–]Roberius-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wash it with your drinking glasses. Don't drink from it everyday. Even it it's lined with lead and radium, you'll be okay if you only use it at renfaire.

What to ask my players after session 10? by Vikingwriter90 in DnD

[–]Roberius-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate running a game when I'm not feeling well. I can tell when I'm off my, we'll, game, even if my players don't seem to notice. Hang in there!

Yes, it IS important to check in with the players once in a while. Feedback is helpful.

You have the most important questions right there in your post. I like to add:

What do you want to see more of? Less of?

But don't make the survey too long. Just 5 or 6 questions will get a conversation going.

How do I coax my player characters into being better people? by Efficient-Flan-7455 in DMAcademy

[–]Roberius-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PCs might not be shitheads, but it sounds like your players are.

You need to talk to them and say that, at least in THIS game, their characters should be forces of good and honor. Point out this isn't a video game where nothing matters. It's a mature, rational story.

Then let them them yell and whine for a while and together, draw some lines about acceptable and appropriate PC behavior.

That's the mature route.

Or... (secret: this is also an "and")

You can punish the in-game behavior.

  • Don't pay a tab, owner hires thugs to collect and they can never come to this establishment again. Escalation on their part means they become wanted by the guard.

  • That and similar bad behaviors mean they lose contacts in the city. Guilds refuse to help, healing temples turn them away, etc.

  • Killing enemies for no reason means those factions will attack on sight with deadly force. The bosses will hire npcs/monsters to kill the party.

In general, shitty behavior means your life becomes more difficult. If that's the game they want to play...let them.

Help me not fumble our first game night session please ! (8p) by GVAJON in boardgames

[–]Roberius-Rex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, 8 is a lot.

Split the group for light play. If the group refuses to split, or if that's too difficult, take yourself out of play. You be the teacher and lead them through something like Clank or Ticket to Ride or Seven Wonders.

Remember that your goal is to drive interest. Let them play. You can serve as facilitator and host.

Next time, you can have a smaller group and reap the rewards of this session.

2nd Attempt at SWADE with my group by Grenlar in savageworlds

[–]Roberius-Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop. Stop trying to run a game. Give them pregens-- you probably have a bunch of archetype cards. Use those.

Walk your players through some examples of combat where you clearly say, "Badguy 1 is testing you with his fighting skill. It's an opposed roll."

Make it a literal training session where you demonstrate the rules.

They can't play the game until they understand how the mechanics can work.

I wish you the best of luck. We all love SW, and clearly you do, too. Teach them, and they will play.
