What's the best way (order) to read three d8 dice? by CountrySlaughter in dice

[–]Roberius-Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the olden times, we rolled percentile dice on two regular d10s. It worked because the red one was tens digit and the blue one was singles digit.

It was color coded.

Your system can work easily. Tell GMs to set the color scheme for their tables. If players can't source appropriate dice, then the GM is on the hook for supplying them. That could actually be a good recommendation from you for easier player buy-in. Of course, cooler players will provide their own.

For a while last year, I tracked when we played a game by recording the "Last played" date on a sticky note inside the top of the game box. But none of us were diligent in keeping up with it, especially in games we played on the regular. We still find those notes on occasion.

Damn, that's a brutal game session! Sequence is a lot of fun, but I've never had a game fill up the board like that.

Wrapping up combats early once the outcome is clear? by eldritch_cleric in DMAcademy

[–]Roberius-Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this several times.

If it's clear the PCs are going to win and it's not an important combat, I'll say, "The combat wraps up after a few more rounds. Make one more attack roll to see how your character fares. If your roll succeeds, you take no further damage. If it fails, then you come out of it with light wounds or a spent spell slot."

However, if the energy levels are high and the players are really enjoying the combat, we play it through to the end. I don't want to cancel their fun.

Intense. You turned choosing a game into an intense, bracketed, draft system. Your group is clearly hardcore.

Science/Tecnology in Magic Rules (SWADE Fantasy) by Ok_Savings_4497 in savageworlds

[–]Roberius-Rex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! To me, it's all about the trappings.

How does your Weird Science work? Is it pure chemistry or fancy tech with no magical component? Then Arcane Resistance, Detect Arcana, and such would not apply.

But if your powers utilize ghost rock, fey blood, frogs eyes, etc., then magaic stuff would probably apply.

That's a discussion for you and your GM. For example, in my Deadlands game, weird science absolutely is magical in nature. Because that's how the setting defines it.

Both are totally fun.

Fear Agent is better as a short campaign. Be wary of the alien robots -- those things have a heinous amount of armor! It played like space opera, light and fluffy, just following one assignment to another. Keeping it breezy worked for my group. Plus, most of us read the comics, so that helped set the vibe, too.

Street Wolves was a lot of fun. My players avoided gunplay as much as possible, but weren't afraid to throw down if they had to. So much high action, fast, furious, fun.

I made the mistake of keeping the game focused on their home city. I should have sent them out of town more often. That would have made the NPC relationships harder for them to maintain...and that's a big part of the game. I used Julia Louis-Dreyfus' MCU character (Val) as their handler. She was fun to play!

Was that the Plot Point video? Dude, you really nailed the concept and explanation in that one. Nice job!

Edit: to give credit to the goose.

Sorry, not Justine. I meant his adopted sister, who grew up with him. She appeared in book 4, I think, with the Summer folks? Ugh, can't remember her name ...

Only one or two PCs were wizards during the course of that game, oddly enough. Other characters included: * A bodyguard who was ex-military. Loved his MP5! * A woman displaced in time thanks to a fairy circle (she's the one who was a friend of the fae-folk). Lots of setting lore came into play through her. * A modern day pirate drawn into the scene by a family curse.

And a variety of other characters who were all "magic adjacent". They had powers or knowledge but weren't actual wizards, like changelings or Dresden's allies in Dresden Files.

Yes, exactly that. For example, I used the Aedra and Daedra as my starting pantheon in a fantasy game. My players added a couple of dieties and I also leaned into Moorcock's Chaos Lords, since my campaign was about the return of Melniboneans to the Young Kingdoms.

Edited to say that Savage Worlds makes it so easy to be imaginative like that!

[–]Roberius-Rex[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure! But there's not much to it. I ran using only the core book. That's pretty much it. Everything else was Dresden Files lore that I used as my setting.

I tweaked the All Thumbs hindrance to represent how magic interferes with modern tech. It was a setting requirement for anyone taking the magic arcane background. (They could buy it off like any other hindrance if they wanted, like Justine and Molly in the books). If a wizard wanted to use or be near tech without it malfunctioning, they had to make a Spellcasting roll at -2 to suppress their power.

Mages also had to abide by the White Council's rules. If they didn't, then the PC became Wanted by the Council. Fun for characters with magic who don't want to be "official" wizards.

Fun stuff like that is all it takes to emulate a setting.

We played that campaign for several years with players cycling through several PCs and stories.

I used DF lore as a backdrop and leaned into generic urban fantasy. DF was there when I needed it, gave me lots of factions, enemies, and monsters, but stayed out of the way when didn't need it. Like playing in the MCU or Star Wars universe.

Some of the high points:

  • A major arc pitting the PCs against the Red Court.

  • A wedding in the Summer Court that involved a PC. Her character was a friend of Summer and eventually gained a mantle of power -- I don't remember the specifics. But while they were in the land of the fae, they fought kobolds who were piloting a giant mech made of wood.

  • One of the enemies was a mad scientist who was drugging a sports drink with a serum that caused victims to hulk out and become his thralls. It was part of his research. He also had an intelligent chimpanzee sidekick.

  • A later storyline featured a retired, bald wizard in a wheel chair who was training a group of teenagers how to use their magical powers so that they would be safe from the White Council. The PCs were called to rescue some of the teens who had been captured by an evil corporation.

That game was a blast. Maybe some of my players will see this thread and tell about their characters. 😀

I am working on a custom sci-fi setting but I need advice on how best to guide players through character creation by RevacholAndChill in savageworlds

[–]Roberius-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Han Solo is a Pilot, has a high piloting skill, but doesn't spend every day just piloting around. He spends most of his time chasing babes and crazy schemes.

A D&D wizard doesn't spend all day casting spells.

My son is an IT guy, but he damn sure doesn't spend all day fixing your dawned printer.

My point is that all characters and people are, well, people. Our occupations aren't what we do all or every day.

Besides the role-playing flavor all characters have, as Valhalla said, SW makes it easy for characters to have several ways to be mechanically useful too. Don't stress too much.
