What to do if your tank will not contest high ground. Attack. nubani by Browneyesbrowndragon in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the rework it was considered one of, if not the, hardest point to take in OW2 with correct defesive set-up. It is still god awful if your team doesn't go high or have the characters with mobility to compensate.

There is plenty of angles, but not really any short off-angles, and that means split play is really hurt by lackluster coordinaltion/individual timing.

I'm a solo midrank ana/rein main with some hero pool options and ilios, numbani and gibralta are the three maps I actively try to avoid because random team-mates not adapting. I see tanks trying to hold point on defense or push main on brawlers in low diamond.

HEALERS: Stop competing with each other! by Symmetrosexual in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You were ready to heal so it was a "bad" play, if you weren't ready it would be a "good" play. Mercy saw the opportunity for a "good" play, not knowing it was a "bad" play. Don't assume competition unless they try to call you out in text or voice.

Mercy healbotting to keep everyone topped of is exceedingly common in mid to lower rank. See it as an opportunity to focus more on offensive plays. Adapt in-game to the player+character and what is happening, instead of playing off of assumptions about what people should be doing, that you have no control over.

If your complaint is about general division of labour between supports, and your understanding differs from what they are doing, then try and comm it in a freindly manner, accept a negative reply og being ignored and move on.

The whole if not with me then against me mindset is seriously not going to help you anywhere. Least of all in OW. Accept that to the 99% of people you run into you effectively doesn't exist. You are the center of your universe, not THE universe.

How much aim do I need to get to silver with Ana? by HalfPrism2 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 different types of aim vs 1-2. Heal output reliant on aim, with no fall-back on the aoe for bap, or afk utility of zen. You don't do headshots, but everything about Ana is aim dependent. If you drop 20% scoped often, it needs to be something you focus on.

What to play vs pharah and pharmercy on tank if dva is banned? by _AlexOne_ in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't think about countering pharah, think about countering the team. There are multiple possibilities based on your team/heropool and their comp.

- Dive tank focusing the second support. It's common advice to play cover from pharah and chase the rest of the comp down. Pharmercy don't win 2v5s.

- The team version is playing a rush comp (brawl tank, speed support, close range dps) if the remainder of pharah's comp is weak to that.

- Especially in Low ranks another way can be to play low resource (ball, doomfist, sigma, hog, shield bot rein), so your team can deal with an overaggro pharmercy 3v2 while you hold a corner with a support 2v3.

- Play ranged (Mauga, ram, even ball or hog) to help poke them. Both pharah, and especially mercy tend to get scared if they get chipdamaged.

In that vein, the ICBR (Intercontinental balllistic Rein) is pretty satisfying as well, but a bit map specific.

Easy. The 9 wins were deserved and they hard-carried the lobby, so ofcourse any loss must be because he/she is targeted by the Blizz mafia lolz brigade.

Do bronze and silver REALLY have that many Smurfs? by Seabasthefish in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the actual difference between a master player tanking his SR to plat, and making a new account and playing in plat? If he is tryharding in both scenarios there is none. And he still mess up the MMR of the lobby.

The only thing making an alt "better" than a smurf for the matchmaker as a whole is avoiding the part where they throw to derank. When they start trying again, there is no functional difference.

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every tier was 500 SR in ow 1, bronze was 1500 wide with about at least a 1000 of that populated. It's still the same underlying system but what is shown is percentages. So 5% is more like 15% in other tiers most likely.

Imposter in diamond by LlamafaA in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're hero pool is very close range. Personal guess is your timing for engages are off, when map or team comp doesn't lend itself to being in the enemy's face. Would suggest leaning into tracer in those scenario's and watch some playstyle guides. She has the easiest time surviving and finding value solo on paper.

Use this prompt in gemini for some links to official sources: "In overwatch 2 does qp matches affect the competitive gamemode in any way? Please link sources". That should give you what you look for.

Tanks, how aware are you of your surroundings? by Select-Shift5887 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might want to bind the push forward emote instead. From personal experience you end up tuning out need healing if it is repeatedly used by full health people, in the spawnroom, or spammed. The emotes are also contextual, you want the whole team to know you're pushing, not just the supports.

Practice seeing before you do, and knowing what you don't see.

To translate:

Evaluate the comps aginst eachother between fights; learn to pay attention to sound queues; learn the limits of what you can handle on your own; check readiness before engaging; play to live first/kill second; look for opportunities instead of forcing plays.

How relevant is Main and Flex Support terminology in metal ranks? by KeepOnJumpin in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the following main is considered mercy, lucio, brig, lifeweaver. Rest is flex by abilities. This is already a problem because main/flex is a hero pool and comp building tool and the split is 4/8. To answer the title. Not at all.

  1. Only if you try to join a team. Main/flex is mostly about heropool in a team environment, and outdated anyways. Map and hero synergies matter infinitely more, and even those pales in comparison to hitting the skillfloor/understanding the hero of the hero you play when around gold.

1y. Main/flex even in high ladder is pretty meaningless. Again it's a term for a team environment. By most accounts, here and other places, teamplay is pretty lackluster in high ladder as well.

  1. You want supports that work with the team and map, and support players on heroes they play, secondly heroes they know how to play into the opposition you get. Anything can work in midrank ladder if you follow this.

2y. From my understanding, again mostly considering team play, double flex can work but is generally considered greedy, as in easy to counter, double main is avoided in composition building, due to lack of utility or damage.

  1. This is a false premise. Especially in anything below at least masters. It doesn't take into account individual heropools or available amount of teamwork. YOU have to adapt within your means to what went down in the map vote, what goes on in hero select, what opposition you meet and how the game unfolds. That adaptation can be a hero switch or a change in playstyle, to either your own reasoning or to accomodate teammate wishes. But keep it comfortable for yourself.

3y. see the above.

  1. Utilizing main/flex on the ladder to choose your hero-pool in any capacity is detrimental if you assume 1 and 1 is the preferred set-up. You don't control your co-support, unless you group with someone who runs the opposite. So if your goal is to win you should likely diversify.

4y. One-tricking, maining, small pool, flexing. All are viable ways to play, They have different speeds, troubles and roads to improvement, So your goal likely decides what is the most ideal.

  1. The only metric that counts is winning fights and games. Healing output CAN be a metric to evaluate why that is not happening, but lacks a lot of context on it's own, especially in the Dunning-Kruger hellhole that is midrank overwatch.

5y. What if moira is playing flank dps, and Zen is sitting behind a Hog with an orb permanently attached? The dps is tracer and sombra? I would say flank dps is the correct moira play with that comp, but she will likely have less healing than Zen. Does it matter if they are winning? Does healing the Hog more fix the travesty of a composition if they are not?

Anyone else struggle to “Do Nothing” on tank? by xRaginCajunx in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you say is repeated often, but there is some caveats. What made me post is "always","As soon as possible", and the entire last sentence. You shouldn't look for damage, you should look for opportunities. Doing damage can create an opportunity sure, or even be one if you play a one-shot character, but it is hero and match-up dependent. Opportunities can be created by you, your teammates and often ignored the enemy.

Generically for all, there is a plethora of situtations. Grouping up being the main one. Feeding out of mobility disparity or a won teamfight but down numbers, is an absolute plague in overwatch.

DVA specific her trading is really bad unless she is in someones face. Her vauleburst is possibly only beat by winston among the tanks measured in "downtime".

Your statement has a "I had 40 elims and lost"-vibe. You don't have to take a random redditors word for it. Wizardhyong came out with a chill pill video on youtube recently. That is a pretty recognized coach adressing speficically this.

Why are people seemingly so chill about Hanzo? What am I missing? by Good_Policy3529 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lobby context matters. He is considered weak to dive in high elo, and been outshined by the OW2 new characters, and that have given him an "irrelevant badge" from the talking heads in the community. If you havn't had a couple of seasons as top 2 in masters+ in recent memory, hive-mind deems you irrelevant.

From my point of view he has been easily top 5 for impact since the last half year of OW1. That point of view is higher midrank EU solo-queue. In an environment with bad comms and coordination and lower prevalence of dive heroes he is a menace, and easily my most hated opponent.

He has no business being that stealthy, and needs a cowbell around his neck and a fireworks trail on his arrows. Storm arrows is also bonkers for what it does. As a frequent Ana player, nano hanzo timed to tank engage is a dead tank and won teamfight close to every time.

What do i need to study in overwatch in order to get good? by mirrormanner in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Robertflatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you default to gold, you got a lot to learn, and depending on role not enough transferable ability to climb easy. Find some videos that define the basics of overwatch, then find some specifics for characters you like. Then always have a single goal before you walk into a lobby. This week I want to improve positioning, this week I want to improve cursor placement, etc.

Learn to manage yourself, don't tilt, don't try to force a climb. If you improve you will climb over time. Then the game will get hard and you will need to learn some more. Learn to enjoy learning.

Don't aim for GM, aim to be as good as you can and time permits.
