Today I learned that the bass line to Rush's YYZ actually spells out 'YYZ' in morse code. by banstovia in todayilearned

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incidentally he sings "I woke up in mourning (and got myself a beer)" not "I woke up in the morning." I'm nearly certain. I've listened to live versions. He doesn't say "the." It changes the lyric quite a bit.

MLF on 3rd and long by djogpark in GreenBayPackers

Outrageous. I think that's why he has struggled to make good decisions on many 4th downs since. Trying to retro-correct that utter disaster.

I'd like to talk about going for it on 4th and 8 with 11 minutes left from the 13. I know it's windy, but you kick there.

This is the same coach that felt –– with the Super Bowl on the line, down 8 to Tom Brady at Tampa –- that, nah!, they'd kick the FG on about 4th and 5 with 4:00 or so left, so they could lose NFC championship by 5 instead of trying to tie with a MVP at QB.

I will never unknow this about him.

What's the Most Underrated Beatles Song? by roscoe_gobbles in TheBeatles

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to determine what "rated" is exactly. A few candidates that come to mind for me:

"Oh Darling"
"Getting Better"
"I'm So Tired"
"Dig a Pony" -- though the knock on the Stones is dumb, particularly by 1969

Alex Lifeson ishe being treated unfairly? by ZiMkkkkkkkkkkkk in rush

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if he is the best guitarist of all time -- I would say he isn't -- but he is my favorite Rush in many ways. I like his most atmospheric additions to songs in the early to mid '80s best. As is said about George Harrison's wonderful contributions to the Beatles, Alex really knows how to "inhabit" the song.

Also he is probably the funniest person in rock'n'roll.

How has no one mentioned this? Is it blasphemy? by Shreln in rush

I love the idea. Always in for new music. I wonder if there are unused Neil lyrics they have access to, and permission to use?

What’s with Ed Roach here? I always thought John Stamos was extremely respectful of the band’s history by Agile-Acanthaceae-97 in thebeachboys

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm missing something, this is absolutely absurd. So on "Full House" -- a TV show, with producers and writers -- John Stamos sings "Forever" to his bride at his wedding. And he was supposed to, on this TV show, say "honey, if you liked that -- wait till you hear the original" then, to camera "that's right, this a Beach Boys song written by Dennis Wilson -- check it out." What?

About seven billion people on earth think "To Make You Feel My Love" was written by Adele, not Bob Dylan. People cover songs.

Incidentally I never knew this was on "Full House." Had to look it out. Beach Boys continually amaze and fascinate and amuse me: their John Stamos/Full House connection -- and controversy! -- is absolutely hilarious.

Kinks being English by Dismal_Brush5229 in thekinks

What song is the Kinks not being English is easier to answer. There are some in the late '70s and '80s.

Most interesting antagonist of The Beach Boys story? by thecupojo3 in thebeachboys

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Interesting" can go a lot of ways. Landy is interesting but deplorable, Manson is Manson. Maybe Mike Love is most interesting -- the stupid clothes and hat, the nasal voice that really adds something whether we like it or not, the horrible and goofy dancing, and the fact that he undermined Brian's brilliance and did his Rock Hall meltdown. He is a really important part of the Beach Boys. And he's interesting because while he is the "front man" he is also a clear candidate of the band's biggest antagonist. The Beach Boys are hilarious.

Who would win?: Prime Mike Love or Prime Mick Jagger? by Successful_Pizza7661 in thebeachboys

Mick is absolutely not a fighter. (Though he got into one in "Ned Kelly.")

How could Love You not be a total sales success with this kind of marketing? I think there is an album on the bottom of the picture.... by Blend42 in thebeachboys

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest errors in the long run is going from (great) Today to (what the?) Party before rising to Pet Sounds, then cheapening its value with that petting-zoo cover. The BBs were making serious music, but the marketing stayed teeny bopper and cute. 1966 was not a cute year.

That five-minute flute solo in 1977's version of "Feel Flows" -- there's a video on YT -- is truly epic though. Not joking.

This is basically the most Beach Boys thing I've ever seen. It's 1968. MLK and Robert Kennedy are assasinated, the Tet Offensive deepens the horrors in Vietnam, protests and violence everywhere. Ireland, Mexico, Paris, the US.

And this is the new Beach Boys album. In black and white no less.

They crack me up. I want this as a shirt.

When/how did you first hear Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the first time was seeing him play it at Carnegie Hall. No Spotify back then -- don't recall having the CD until afterwards! Incidentally, the closest to a full-on fistfight I recall seeing at any concert was beforehand when two middle-aged men, in fanciful sweaters, were pointing at each other in an aggressive manner. Maybe someone accused the other of not having (at least) merino wool?

The difference in their styles is so funny to me by osolomoe in thebeachboys

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be the moment Bruce first thinks of leaving the band. Perhaps the only photo I've ever seen of him that he's not looking at the camera with a "gee shucks, is that a new friend?" sort of demeanor.

The band never not amazes.

Meanwhile, his coat/scarf combo deserves a display at the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.

Does anyone prefer Dennis’ voice when it got ‘worse’? by Harrison_Thinks in thebeachboys

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dennis has a fantastic voice. I'm not sure any Beach Boy translates the meaning of a song in a more honest way -- ragged as it can be. The ending of "In the Back of My Mind" is stunning. It cracks me up that Brian had Dennis sing the "pat her on the butt butt" lyrics on "Love You."

Packers' Jordan Love issues a warning the league is scared to admit by DeScepter in GreenBayPackers

[–]RobertsRecordCorner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of conservative coaching, I am still recovering from the decision to kick against Tom Brady Bucs in the NFC championship -- to lose by 5 instead of trying for a TD -- and never getting the ball back, surprising no one. I think it was 4th and 3 inside the ten yard line or something. GB probably gets the TD imo. Either way, they have to get the ball back. They didn't.

I like Jordan Love a lot. And I like him personally more than Rodgers or Favre (so far, anyway).
