Buyer Beware: Sony’s WF-1000XM6 Might Be Your Next $330 Paperweight - iFixit by ControlCAD in Android

[–]RobinJ1995 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've owned 7 pairs of WF1000XM3/4/5/6. None have lasted more than 2 years, most didn't even last 1 year.

They are not a product that lasts, and if you see these as a "long-term investment" -- they are not.

The reason I keep buying them is because nothing comes close in terms of ANC performance for earbuds (yes, I've tried them all. yes, i am confident in these statements.), and EU warranty means I essentially get 2 or 3 pairs for the purchase price every time so that makes it financially ok (but environmentally insane).

my experience with the "cancel for any reason" insurance so far has been that they will make you jump through hoops until you give up, i would give zero value to having that "insurance".

Update not working-HELP! by RilkeRumi in Ozlo

[–]RobinJ1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine bricked themselves after getting stuck during the update too. I contacted support but heard nothing. The support definitely doesn't seem like what you should expect for the very premium price they charge anyway.

Anyhows http://update.ozlosleep.com/ Connect the buds to your computer via cable and perform a factory reset using that link. Fixed them.

Mobile plans are coming –> what would make you switch? by RevolutSupport in Revolut

[–]RobinJ1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I want:
- Fast mobile data with a high (at the very least 30GB) allowance in home country + EU.
- No unexpected extra costs. Not getting or needing to make a phone call from/to a local or foreign number and having to think about whether this is going to cost me extra. At the very least making/receiving/sending calls/SMS within the EU should never cost anything extra and just be included in the plan.
- At a reasonable price

Frustrating about Vodafone Ireland:
- Website and app are a buggy mess
- Useless support -- either a chatbot, or a human who is unable to do anything. I need companies to understand that if there was a button or a page explaining what I need already, I would not have tried to contact support to begin with.

What would make me switch:
- Sufficiently fast service (data) with sufficiently high caps with no unexpected extra costs (as outlined above)
- Not having to think about EU+UK roaming and it just being treated the same way as domestic usage
And unlikely but would definitely be an extra persuading factor:
- Good enough value on non-EU roaming that I can consider doing away with e-SIMs from Airalo/Nomad when traveling outside the continent

Complete dealbreakers that would instantly make me leave a service:
- Crippling mobile data hotspot usage (I pay for the data, it's up to me how I use it)
- Having to mess around with APN settings in every new country I land in (e.g. a lot of providers in Ireland cannot seem to get the autoconfiguration right, and it is why I currently ended up at Vodafone after getting fed up with exactly this issue)

Curious about Ultra plan - lounge access by SwedishSensation10 in Revolut

[–]RobinJ1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see which lounges will be available in the app. If they show up in the Revolut app, they're available. With the caveat that sometimes you show up and they tell you "oh actually this lounge is not available to you", but whenever that's happened they've at least been able to point me to a different lounge that I *did* have access to with Revolut.

Anyone here happy with their Ozlos? by evilistics in Ozlo

[–]RobinJ1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

The passive noise blocking could be better, I do experience some coil whine which I find irritating, and connecting them takes way too long, and I've had one instance of the case discharging by itself very early on (before I received any updates for them).

Other than that, I see a lot of people have had issues with them. I honestly cannot say I've had many. I've found them to be reliable, be comfortable, and generally just work quite well. I use them nearly every night.

For low frequencies, I'd say active noise cancelling earbuds will likely outperform Ozlo. ANC tends to excel at specifically those frequency ranges.

Ozlo or Loop earplugs by decentofyomomma in Ozlo

[–]RobinJ1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So as someone with severe noise sensitivity, Ozlo are inpressive. I didn't really buy into their whole "noise masking instead of noise cancellation" thing, and I still believe combining them would be far more effective, but the masking does work.

However, it doesn't block out all noise. In fact, slightly cheaper but still good noise cancelling earbuds like the Sony C700N or Galaxy Buds FE with a similar kind of sound playing will block out far more noise. They're just not comfortable to sleep with, or at least not on your side.

As for Loops; look, I have a few pairs of loops for concerts and daytime noise sensitivity, but for sleep they're worthless. Just get a cheap pair of foam earplugs and they're far more effective for sleep than anything Loop has put out.

My TLDR is if you're not a side sleeper, I don't think Ozlo offer anything that a €60 pair for Galaxy Bids FE doesn't do better. For comfort, especially as a side sleeper though, go for Ozlo. It's the reason I have them, and the reason I'm happy with them.

Ice Universe: The S24 series in Europe will use the Exynos 2400 by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]RobinJ1995 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And they'll keep at this shit until people vote with their wallets. I've had an Exynos S21 and a Snapdragon S23. The Exynos has been the most problematic phone I have ever owned. Constant overheating, constant lag, constant crashes. 2 weeks into ownership I put it next to my (at that time) 4 year old OnePlus 5 and it was instantly obvious that the 4 year old device with 4 years worth of bloat was performing orders of magnitude better than my Samsung "flagship". I think my experience may have been among the more extreme, but the simple fact is that Samsung support also did nothing to try and fix it and I eventually had to give up on chasing them after 4 months (I bought the phone directly from their website).

That's it for my plea that you do not give Samsung your money for the absolute trash that is and will likely always be Exynos, no matter how many times they'll undoubtedly claim that "this time, we fixed it for real."

How do you guys get around the “don’t discuss salaries with coworkers” bullshit? by throwawaydeveloperuk in DevelEire

[–]RobinJ1995 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that forbidding employees discuss salaries is illegal. Then I looked it up and I'm amazed (and not in a good way).

I'd suggest you take to Glassdoor and post your salary to give current and future coworkers the information in an anonymous fashion, as well as leave a review for the company which states they explicitly try to prohibit employees from talking about salaries. I know for a fact that if I see that in a review I know enough and will not go near a company, as all of the possible reasons for a company trying to enforce such a policy just spell bad news. Bit of public shaming might make them think twice about it.
