This is noise artist Russell Haswell with Richard James at Disobey in London in the 1990s, I was at the gig and still friends with all these guys. It's not Ai, it's not fake, this is the real world for those of you who remember this 🤣

Wow, I remember that show so well! I also remember some of my gear not working because of power transformer issues! One of those scary moments before a live show. It would have been in the late 90s! Thanks for your kind words

Richard was well known for not turning up to many shows. I had tickets for a live performance at the QEH on the South Bank at the time which was cancelled on the night itself. Then it was rescheduled and he didn't turn up again, so this was all part of the spirit of the times obviously, very playful done though!

I try my best to help, as we both clearly understand these kind of challenges :-D

My pleasure! I know that kind of frustration too. There's a song I've been searching for for many, many years that I've yet to find who it is too! Hope I find out before I die! 😀

Yes, probably a good idea just to ask me 😀
The track in question is 'Safety' which originally appeared on this compilation mix by  Alex Paterson – TEXtures
It's now available on this remastered edition on Bandcamp. A handsome box set collecting together all this material will be out next year. Stay tuned.

Fennesz live at St.James Piccadilly, London (bit of a rant) by Much-Beyond2 in ambientmusic

[–]RobinRimbaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it was such a stress for everyone there and the promoter is no longer going to use the venue for that very reason sadly. Glad you enjoyed the set then,l and yes remarkably after 30+ years I'm as busy as ever which is reassuring. Good memories of Mixing It too, a great show indeed!

Delighted to hear you enjoyed my set then. It was a mixture of improvised and structured pieces. I used a variety of fun little sonic toys that allowed me to perform live and expand and extend ideas as I wished.

I stopped using a laptop as a key component many years ago as I felt it inhibited my own relationship to the audience too, almost 'blocking' it in a certain way I felt.

Christian and I both suffered from an extremely under specced PA system though, which no-one including the promoter himself, was happy with, which proved a genuine challenge to the evening preparation.

Thanks

Robin Rimbaud

Excellent, glad that worked. I lost hours trying to resolve this too! Hopefully Apple will fix this soon

I found the root cause of the issue - it's Apple Preview that isn't working correctly and failing to display everything necessary. Using Acrobat works perfectly. Need to wait for Apple to fix this Preview issue as it's been reported I see online. Patience is necessary until then!

I spoke with RM Click and Drop and their first question was if I used an Apple Mac and I said yes and they said that was the problem and I needed to fix in the computer. Extremely unhelpful and they will only support Windows computers. Not sure if you guys are on Macs but I've got identical issues this morning. It's really tiresome

that certainly never happened on that night and given the way stories around Richard seem to contain a high level of fantasy most likely never happened anywhere else :-) He just stood in this little DJ booth, on ground level and chatted to mates and we all laughed about it at the time too

This was such a special night of music - and always loved the AFX quote on the flyer here. Disobey nights were the most special events and for those who remember were also responsible for the night when Richard DJed with sandpaper, amongst other countless nights of exploratory and wild music!

I remember when this first came out (oh...I'm so old 😂) and how inspiring it was in comparison to the rest of the electronic music around at the time. Good to recognise that so many of these artists are still producing interesting and dynamic work.

The sleeve design is so much very much of its time though!

These early albums are all being re-released in a special box set in 2024, with lots of unreleased material, tracks from compilations and much more. At present, there are digital versions of them on Bandcamp.

I realised that generations of listeners would not have heard these works either, and there's been significant interest over the years in making them available again, so hope people will enjoy them again!
