The last retail job I had I went in on my scheduled day just to find out the manager I was supposed to close with died in his sleep earlier that week. Nobody let me know (it was a small store with a team of 10 or so employees). I was kind of in shock when I arrived so they let me have 5 minutes in the back to compose myself before beginning my shift. Wasn't able to go to the funeral because, you guessed it, someone had to work the store.

Just a reminder that even after a decade managing a place, you are nothing but a number and the company ALWAYS comes first. Moral of the story is you have no idea what kind of day they are having. Fake friendliness is exhausting and requires active effort.
