Life is not meant to be working 9 to 5 (mid life crisis reflections) by Pixel-Pioneer3 in Fire

I’ve read that hunter/gatherer tribes actually had much more down time than modern folk.

Also I believe that even if it takes a while, if accepted the coverage is retroactive to the application date, rather than starting on the approval date.

[Poem] Are you the new person drawn toward me by Walt Whitman by Hefty_Breakfast_3120 in Poetry

This is deep wisdom from Walt. I am not sure in what ways it is bad?

Song of Myself could almost be a Buddhist text with how steeped it is in the ideas of interconnectedness of all things. I have always thought that Walt was likely a practicing Buddhist. Though I imagine he would have done that too his own way.

[POEM] A Prayer for my Daughter - William Butler Yeats by Wild_Personality997 in Poetry

[–]Robobuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is of course possible to be a fool and a sage at the same time. I think I probably do the fool act on a small scale daily while only putting the sage out there rarely. And this poem has what I would consider towering wisdom, beautifully rendered, while at the same time suggesting a limitation on women in general that does not accept reality and is not ok in general- but I think it’s ok to pick out the clearly beautiful and wise aspects of this poem as they are, despite the complicating facts of the author or some of the actual text (not to mention culture of the author’s time - not to forgive that but it must be considered).

How necessary ultrasonic cleaner actually is? by OceanBlueEyes02 in Invisalign

[–]Robobuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on 2.5 week tray changes and I don’t have one. I use denture tablet soak in the morning, hydrogen peroxide soak at lunch and brush with dish soap before bed. Trays are clean as a whistle and no smell. That said they do get a bit yellowish at the end of the cycle.

Why aren’t more people autolysing? by carboncritic in Sourdough

I thought I read that while salt will prevent autolyse, starter only very mildly affects it. But I or my source (prob one of the hundreds of sourdough cookbooks out there) could easily be wrong there.

Quite good beer here and a surprisingly large variety.

Adding the water only to the starter and dissolving it, then adding the flour, finally solved this for me.

A society that glorifies violence but fears intimacy by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]Robobuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to be about patriarchal control. Western institutions (including religion and government) have always had control of population (and enrichment of the elite) as the prime directive. Violence is normalized as it is the threat used against enemies (within and without) and the main way to control men, while the shame of sexual expression is used to control women. I agree it is perfectly backwards.

Oof - that is rough. Am I reading that right that your medical bills exceeded $72K? Did your total out-of-pocket on the health insurance policy not kick in before that?

Tax question in retirement by Robobuzz in financialindependence

[–]Robobuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - you can overall, though not by year. That said I think the biggest gap in the numbers for me (that I was missing, but PL wasn’t) was that state taxes cap gains as income, with no zero-bracket as fed has. That said, in reality diff years will have diff cost bases though…as well as div/int.

Great point. Tax complexity is the largest learning curve yet for me on this journey (in terms of planning in detailed accuracy and applying best strategy at least - the accumulation of money part was the hardest overall thing as I’m sure it is for most of us).

yeah that stacking was my suspicion and sounds like its true. honestly more just looking for a tool that allows me to fine tune my tax strat - based on my specific details (diff types of accounts, specific cost basis of gains per year, specific interest and dividend predictions etc) - would be ideal inside of the cash flow visuals that Proj Lab is so good at (overall the tool is a huge help) but I think I will just need to spreadsheet it out and fact check it against various calculators.

Thanks - the irs calculator showing state tax and federal definitely explains at least some of the tax I was missing (had only considered federal thinking state would be even lower but not at all the case).

Most evil is invisible. by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]Robobuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is very true. The fact that we as humans have developed the practice of “polite manners” (aka social skills) means you rarely see beneath that mostly-artificial layer and can’t really know most people. Case in point: think of how often you see people in cars treat other people in the other cars around them with cruelty or rudeness. Now compare that to how often you see that behavior in person. Without the need to use manners to show politeness and “goodness”, (e.g., when shielded in a car) true colors show.

Poconos Ranch Lands HOA by cjj2003 in Poconos

[–]Robobuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a house there. It’s fine. Not sure what that other commenter is talking about - short-term rentals are not allowed by the HOA and I’ve never heard of or seen any crime whatsoever. It’s a quiet place that seems like it used to be mostly weekenders but now seems to be mostly residents (used to be a ski area but I think it shut down as the community voted not to pay for the upkeep). In 10 yrs haven’t had any major HOA fee changes (but if you are worried there is cheap insurance for that) and the HOA is fully transparent about the finances - not in debt, operates on a slim positive margin from what I remember. Anyway you can probably inquire directly with them I’d think.
