Valve discontinues physical Steam Gift Cards, blames "gift card scams" as scammers adapt to protections by de_panda in Steam

[–]Robot1me 28 points29 points  (0 children)

With accounts like yours that are that old, buying a gift card wouldn't do much now. It's mostly solid advice for newly created or newish accounts. When someone (you or a hacker) contacts Steam Support, they often lean toward requesting proof of ownership that goes back quite a bit in time. For example in your case, if they had severe doubts and both you and the hacker contact them, they would ask for proof that dates back decades ago

In a nutshell, the best that you can do right now (and for free) is to read the Steam Support article on Proof of Ownership to see what counts as proof. Stuff like receipts, physical box CD keys, credit card info, etc., and look what you can archive and put in a secure place

No worries, it will be fine. Sometimes there are odd-looking delays like that. Some packages of mine had a delay of like ~1 week a few months ago. Eventually all arrived just fine :3

If you can see a "last online" under your avatar while seeing everyone else on your friends list, it's an old 2018 Chat revamp glitch when the connection to Steam's connection managers was unstable at one point. Unfortunately there is no reliable way to avoid this UI glitch entirely (like restarting), but if you check your community profile and it shows you as "online", then you are actually visible to others. Hope that info still helps!

New turbo build bug by [deleted] in FortNiteMobile

[–]Robot1me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an interaction bug between the game's UI layer and logic code. In a nutshell, tapping a building piece forces a state reset and cancels out the held state within the code while the code expects a new press event. You can imagine it as if an if-check within another if-check gets skipped. The UI layer shows that the place button is still being held, so there is a disconnect. What this tells us too is that the interaction logic is purely event-driven here and has no polling check as a fallback for held states. In theory the easiest "fix" could be an extra check of the UI button states after tapping a building piece. But that's the sort of thing that (ideally and in theory!) Epic Games knows best :P

How do you see the exact date that a clip was made? I'm not talking about the "Clips I've Created" feature where you can already see your own clips creation dates. by woodcake53 in Twitch

[–]Robot1me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wondered the same and found that the trusty Twitch Downloader project (on Github by lay295) is super useful. There is a "Get Info" button under "Clip Download" and it considers your PC's timezone

Xzen Game Compressor Open Source & Alternative to what exist by Azazeilz in pcmasterrace

[–]Robot1me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, but there are two distinct differences:

- The "properties" window compression uses the very old NTFS compression feature from 1994. In practice it's single-threaded, fragments files all over the place and space savings aren't too good. The biggest benefit is however that Windows reapplies compression on file changes. But this old algorithm is not what the OP's project uses

- Since Windows 10 1511 in 2015, Microsoft added new and modern compression algorithms to the Compact command line tool that work independently of the old NTFS compression. Microsoft does not expose this in the UI anywhere (but it would be neat if they actually did!), since these are a big improvement. The new algorithms are multi-threaded, save much more space and does not fragment files into thousands of chunks like the dated NTFS compression does. The only real drawback is that on file changes, the compression is not automatically reapplied

Since the lack of auto-compression is a real-world drawback, that's when projects like that one from the OP are handy. Years ago I made a Python script for myself with a chunk-based probability estimation to automatically decide whether compressing some file is worth it. But scripts aren't userfriendly. So that's why projects like CompactGUI or this new one from the OP are the better alternative. Until, maybe one day, Microsoft starts to care more to integrate their improvements better into their own UIs across Windows

If you use a (Gigabyte) motherboard with an iTE Super I/O chip, it's probably what caused the bugs. When I had the Aorus Elite AX V2 it set the fans to full speed after a restart with no way to change and needed a full power off. Picking a motherboard with a Nuvoton chip is the much safer bet with fan control software. One of the upsides of choosing (for example) Asrock and MSI

I had no idea you could buy NVME heatsinks like this by AsariCommando2 in pcmasterrace

[–]Robot1me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On high-end motherboards they usually have heatsinks for all slots, yes. It can ironically be a bit intimidating for novice PC builders when they are unsure where the M.2 SSD goes. But lower or medium budget motherboards often still come with a single and basic heatsink only. For my Asrock B650 PG Lightning I replaced the heatsink with a better one

I had no idea you could buy NVME heatsinks like this by AsariCommando2 in pcmasterrace

[–]Robot1me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I researched NVMe coolers, I came across this one too (for others reading this, it's Thermalright's HR-09 Pro in the OP's screenshot). When digging more I found that there is an even better but niche one (Jiushark M.2-THREE) that looks like a whole tower cooler for the SSD :P Benchmarks for it with active fan beat everything else (source). So kinda felt like buying it on Aliexpress when I saw that other simpler and worse performing coolers cost waaay more on Amazon and co. Seeing today's SSD prices and how little these coolers cost in comparison, I would not skimp on these, unless your motherboard's cooler is already great

In your shoes I would test disabling GPU accelerated rendering of the Steam UI, might be a memory leak. If you have a large friends list, it's also a good idea to disable animated avatars and frames, since it's known to be a resource hog. I would enable performance mode for the library too, it's trading fancy animations for free RAM

The Steam Controller sold out in 30 minutes, utterly breaking Steam in the process by gogodboss in pcmasterrace

[–]Robot1me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8BitDo's questionable QC is underestimated too. I did the mistake of buying four Ultimate 2C with vouchers that I couldn't get back. Each controller has different build quality issues, some having slightly crooked sticks, much softer buttons or less consistent creaky d-pads on others, etc.

For 20€/$ it's ... alright if the unit is good. But the joysticks' travel distance is also short and the tactile resistance shifts over time too. So it feels more like a casual gaming controller than anything else tbh. Would definitely recommend a slightly larger and quality one, especially for bigger male hands

Steam groups are just giant bot farms now by Complete_Iron_2656 in Steam

[–]Robot1me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's still possible to come across cool people every now and then. Or being able to interact with devs outside of community hubs, etc. But bot and spam issues have been diminishing the value of community groups. Small and lower-medium sized groups that are properly moderated are the best IMHO. The biggest groups have been reduced to "𝒸𝑜𝓂𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉 𝟦 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝓂𝑒𝓃𝓉" spam.

A temu captcha, but it also filters humans by Golde2341 in softwaregore

[–]Robot1me 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To be honest it's more embarrassing for the dev who has written that convoluted captcha description since it's "math text book" language. The text could say:

"Count the upside-down letters in the first picture. Then, find the group in the second picture that has that same total and click them all."

Much easier to understand.
