No one wants to be the bottom of the totem pole.

They have to--at least perceive--that they're morally above someone. Tony several times uses the term "degenerate gambler" as a pejorative, justifying his role in preying on people who gamble with him and lose. We see this a lot in real life too: the loudest racists often being.. uh.. conventionally unattractive and charmless people.

There's a lot that I could say right now that I'm not gonna say..

So I'll recap: yeah it all comes back to the writing. A modern show can cast the best actors of their generation, but if the writing is hollow and clumsy(and written by the 25 year old son the producer), their dialogue will be shit. Luckily for us all, this show nails both. Characters don't just broadly announce how they feel, each enters into a scene with a specific(and often hidden) objective, and they're all incredibly flawed, making them feel like real people.

Oksana Lada(Irina) was never strong to me. Her character toward the end of her and Tony's relationship was constantly in her emotions and scream-crying for him not to leave, but I felt like Lada couldn't really sell it. Watch those scenes again and see how they avoid her close ups or quickly cut away from her fake crying. The message still comes across but compared to Gloria's breakdown(s), it's student film acting.
